Mattioda the First Over a Million

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

A short-stacked Joe Huang shoved all in for 118,000 from the under-the-gun position and Paul Mattioda called from middle position. The rest of the field folded and it was off to the races.

Huang: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Mattioda: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

Huang was the one at risk and in need of improvement, but he didn't do it on the {8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop. The {9-Clubs} turn improved Mattioda to a full house, and that left Huang drawing dead. The meaningless {4-Diamonds} was put out on the river for good measure, and then Huang made his way to the payout desk in 30th place for $2,587.

Ormson and "Wild Bill" Set Off Into the Sunset

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

After John Sun opened with a raise, Larry Ormson three-bet jammed. Action folded back to Sun, who called with {a-}{q-} suited. Unfortunately for Ormson, his {k-}{q-} offsuit was dominated. Ormson got lucky awhile back to double, but he wouldn't be able to do it again as the board ran out dry. Ormson finished in 34th place.

Not long after, a short-stacked "Wild Bill" Romer moved all in for his last 10 big blinds holding {a-}{8-} and ran it straight into an opponent who woke up with {a-}{8-}. The ace-king held and Romer had to settle for 32nd place.

Wisconsin PPA Director Steve Verrett Sent Home in 36th Place

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Steve Verrett
Steve Verrett

Madison's Steve Verrett, who serves as the Wisconsin director for the Poker Players Alliance, had been grinding a short stack for much of the day, and he recently committed his last 25,000 or so after Paul Vivacqua had raised.

Verrett: {q-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Vivacqua: {a-}{q-}

Verrett had a kicker issue, and it didn't get resolved as the board ran out clean. It's a small consolation, but Verrett managed to ladder up a payout rung by finishing in 36th place, which came with a $2,587 payday.

Nice Run Out for Ormson

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

A short-stacked Larry Ormson moved all in for his last 57,000 only to have Paul Vivacqua three-bet all in over the top from the hijack. The rest of the players folded and Ormson discovered the bad news.

Ormson: {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Vivacqua: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}

Ormson was pipped, and he stood in preparation to make his exit. The {6-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop gave Ormson an open-ended straight draw, but he must not have seen it. We say that because after the {7-Spades} turn, the {4-Diamonds} appeared on the river to give Ormson the said straight. He began to take off his glasses, put them in his pocket, and removed his headphones. A solid 30 seconds passed before Ormson realized he won, and he lit up like a Christmas tree with new life.

Wagner Crushed by Obbink

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

Andreas Wagner got his last 33,000 all in preflop and found himself in bad shape against Ross Obbink.

Obbink: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Wagner: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

Wagner was in desperate need of a six, but he was left wanting as the board ran out a dry {5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{k-Spades}{k-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Wagner exited in 39th place and will take home $2,352 for his performance.

Holm Exits in 41st Place

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Mike Holm
Mike Holm

We saw MSPT Meskwaki runner-up Mike Holm standing at the payout desk, and he informed us that he had just fallen in 41st place.

According to him, he open-shoved with {a-}{k-} and cleared the field to the player in the big blind, who tanked before calling with {7-}{7-}. Holm was unable to catch, and he had to pacify himself with a min-cash. Holm stated that his next stop will be the MSPT Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells later this month.

"Nothing Like Flopping the Nuts"

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante

Greg Baird opened for 15,000 from early position only to have reigning MSPT Player of the Year Pat Steele min-raise to 30,000. Action folded back to Baird, who made the call, and the flop came down {7-Spades}{5-Spades}{j-Spades}. Baird checked and Steele paused for a beat before moving all in. Baird snap-called off for 134,000.

Baird: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}
Steele: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

"Wow, nice hand," Steele said. "Nothing like flopping the nuts."

Indeed, Baird had flopped the nut flush and Steele was drawing dead. The meaningless {J-Clubs} was put out on the turn followed by the {A-Clubs} on the river, and Baird was shipped the double.
