Kessler Loses a River Bet

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

Allen Kessler opened to 800 in the hijack, and Michael Lerma made it 2,200 to go on the button. Kessler came along, and both checked to the river as {a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs} hit the board. At that point, Kessler fired 3,500 and Lerma quickly called.

Kessler showed {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, and Lerma took the pot with {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}.

"I knew I was good on the river," he said.

Steve Anderson swung and missed on his first try here at Mid-States Poker Tour FireKeepers. Already well below the starting stack, Anderson sent 4,000 to an opponent on a {7-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds} board with {j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, outkicked once again by {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}. Left with just 1,075, Anderson busted moments later.

Rolling Along

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

A huge field looks imminent here at Mid-States Poker Tour FireKeepers, as already nearly 140 players have showed up. Last year's Day 1a drew 122, so this is a big step up with hours of registration still open.

Baumgartner Doubles Before Break

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Just before the break, we saw a player walking away from one of the tables with his head in his hands, leaving his remaining stack to blind off the last few minutes until the break. The board had come {7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, and his {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} had been outdrawn by Jake Baumgartner's {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} as the latter made a straight on the river. We didn't see when the money went in, but Baumgartner received more than 13,000 from his opponent.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.
