After fifteen levels of play, it's a wrap for Day 1a of the $360 MSPT Golden Gates Regional Event.

A total of 120 entry slips were sold for this first starting flight but only 17 players found a bag for Day 2 at the end of the night.

At the top of the leaderboard is defending champion Aaron Frei with 443,000, which is more than double his next closest opponent. Last April, Frei navigated through a field of 778 players and won the title of this event after a three-way chop. He will be looking to defend his title, and add another MSPT trophy to his collection.

Frei caught fire during the last levels of the night and really boosted his stack when he rivered a full house against Zach Gutierrez's top two pair, and managed to get paid, eliminating Gutierrez.

He is followed by Chandler Duncan with 218,000. Duncan has multiple final tables on her resume, but will be looking to claim her first record victory. Jesus Sanchez sits in third with 204,000. Sanchez also has an impressive poker resume with over $320,000 in total live earnings. Edward Plumb (200,000) and Johnny Ambrosio (166,000) round up the top five chip counts of this flight.

Other notable players to advance to Day 2 include Ronnie Lamb (80,000) and Jeff Granowsky (78,000).

Many players attempted to make Day 2 through this first flight but failed in their attempt including Gregory Geller, Steve Abramowitz, Samuel Spiwak, Joseph Giampietro, and Barb Visher. They will have the option to try again in any of the three remaining flights if they wish to advance.

The survivors of Day 1a will combine with the survivors of the other three flights on Sunday November 17th at noon local time to continue to battle it out.

Just like Day 1a, PokerNews will keep you abreast of all of the Day 1b action tomorrow.

Gutierrez Eliminated by Frei

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Zach Gutierrez
Zach Gutierrez

Aaron Frei raised to 8,000 from middle position and Zach Gutierrez called from the big blind.

A flop reading {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}{7-Spades} was dealt and Gutierrez checked. Frei bet 7,000 and Gutierrez check-raised to 17,000. Frei added the remainder to call.

The turn brought the {7-Clubs} and Gutierrez threw in a bet of 35,000 that Frei called.

The {6-Diamonds} completed the board and Gutierrez bet 50,000. Frei responded by moving all in for about 215,000 and Guttierez with less behind, went deep into the tank.

"So sick, you've got the seven right there?" asked Gutierrez.

"Wow, you have ace-jack. I didn't think you have ace-jack but now I know you have ace-jack," responded Frei.

After a couple of more minutes of reflection, Gutierrez tossed in a chip, signifying a call. Frei tabled {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for sevens full of sixes and Gutierrez showed {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for aces and jacks before heading to the exit.

Dunn Grabs a Double From Spiwak

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Samuel Spiwak opened to 8,000 under the gun and Alex Dunn called from the button.

The flop came {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and Spiwak checked. Dunn bet 12,000 and Spiwak check-called.

The turn brought the {10-Clubs} and Spiwak checked once more. Dunn moved all in for 54,000 and Spiwak snap-called.

Alex Dunn: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}
Samuel Spiwak: {10-Spades}{7-Spades}

Dunn had a pair of aces and a gutshot but Spiwak was ahead with tens and sevens. However, that didn't last long as the {9-Diamonds} river was just what Dunn needed for a straight, and he took down the pot.

Licking Doubles Through Quick

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

On a flop reading {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, David Quick bet 6,000 from the big blind and Russell Licking moved all in for about 53,000 under the gun. Quick hit the tank for about a minute, then called.

Russell Licking: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
David Quick: {j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

Quick had a flush draw but Licking had queens and fours. The {9-Spades} turn and {5-Spades} river filled up the board and Licking doubled up.
