Phil Gioia Leads 37 Surviving Day 1b Players

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Phil Gioia
Phil Gioia

The second and final starting flight of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Grand Falls Casino $1,100 buy-in, $200K GTD Main Event is in the books. Day 1b attracted 257 runners during Saturday's action, bringing the grand total to 488 entries (231 from Day 1a; 257 from 1b), putting it just behind the record-breaking field from this past August.

While Grand Falls Casino is situated just outside Sioux Falls, South Dakota, it is technically located just across the border in Larchwood, Iowa. Despite being a bit remote, players flocked from the Midwest as well as Colorado, Florida, and Vegas. The turnout was evidence that, despite the current pandemic, there is a big demand for live tournament poker.

After the completion of Level 15, just 37 players bagged and tagged with Phil Gioia and his stack of 488,000 leading the way. That was a bit behind of Day 1a chip leader Paul Carney, who bagged 513,000.

Others to punch their tickets to Day 2 were Josh Matti (465,000), Kyna England (364,000), Jack Do (337,000), and Tim Garles (324,000).

Of course, not everyone was fortunate enough to make it through the night. Among those to fire and fall in Saturday's flight were MSPT Hall of Famer Jason Seitz, along with MSPT Champion's Rob Wazwaz, Keith Heine, Josh Meyer and Jonathan Kim, just to name a few.

Day 2 will get underway at 11 a.m. local time and play to a winner with 67 players returning to the felt. The top 54 finishers will get paid with the eventual winner walking away with a $105,833 first-place prize.

PokerNews will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then.

Cortum Gets Final Level Double With Cowboys

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Kelly Cortum
Kelly Cortum

Kelly Cortum raised to 10,000 from middle position and then called off his 120,000 stack after Terrence Reid three-bet jammed from the big blind.

Kelly Cortum: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Terrence Reid: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Cortum was ahead with his made hand but the {3-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} flop gave him a sweat as Reid picked up a broadway draw.

The board paired with the {3-Spades} on the turn and Cortum just needed to fade any ace or ten on the river to stay alive.

Luckily for Cortum, the {8-Diamonds} completed the board and secured his double-up.

Kyna England
Kyna England

Mike Cofner raised to 5,000 from under the gun and found two callers which included Kyna England from the button.

Cofner continued for 12,000 after the {k-Spades}{j-Spades}{5-Hearts} flop appeared and England raised to 34,000. Once the other player got out of the way, Cofner called and instantly jammed after the {6-Spades} dropped on the turn.

England called off her 100,000 stack and the two players tabled their hands.

Mike Cofner: {a-Spades}{2-Clubs}
Kyna England: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

England was ahead after flopping a set of fives and faded a spade on the river as it came the {9-Diamonds} to secure her double-up.

Mike Cofner: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Keith Heine: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Eric Polson
Eric Polson

Nicola DiTrapani opened for 900 from middle position and Eric Polson defended his big blind to see a {3-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop appear.

Polson check-called the 700 continuation bet from DiTrapani and did the same for 3,000 after the {7-Clubs} dropped on the turn.

The {j-Hearts} completed the board on the river and Polson turned the aggressor after he led out for 8,200. The bet sent DiTrapani into the tank and after a few minutes, he tossed in the chips and called.

Polson showed {j-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for jacks full and DiTrapani tossed {3-Hearts}{x-} into the muck.

Mark Alinder
Mark Alinder

Vic Peppe limped in from under the gun and Mark Alinder followed suit from the button. Action was on Swadeep Mishra who raised to 900 from the small blind.

The big blind folded while Peppe and Alinder called to see a {7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop appear. Action was checked to Peppe who fired out 800 and only Alinder called to see the {k-Diamonds} drop on the turn.

Peppe check-called the 1,200 bet from Alinder and the {4-Hearts} river was checked by both players.

Peppe rolled over {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of eights but it was no good as Alinder showed {k-Spades}{8-Spades} to win the pot with two-pair.
