Yu Holding His Own, Tan Takes Early Lead

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante

Despite grumbling loudly about how tough his table looked when he sat down Winfred Yu only has himself to blame for inviting some of the world’s best poker players to the tournament, but appears to be doing just fine at present, recently taking down a pot from Steve O’Dwyer.

O’Dwyer was the pre-flop aggressor, making it 800 to go from under-the-gun plus one with Yu making the call from the big blind to take play heads-up to a rather dry flop of {4-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, which brought a check from Yu and a 500 continuation bet from O’Dwyer, which Yu quickly called.

The {j-Hearts} turn brought checks from both players, as did the {7-Diamonds} river with Yu being the first to show his hand, taking down the 2,750 pot with {a-Spades}{j-Spades} after O’Dwyer mucked.

It looks as though it is China’s Xuan Tan who has taken an early lead however, and we arrived at his table in time to see him embroiled in a decent sized pot against tablemate Marius Torbergsen.

We caught the action on the turn on a board reading {j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts} with over 6,000 already in the pot just as Torbergsen (big blind) checked the action over to Tan on the button, who fired for 3,000, which after some deliberation Torbergsen called.

The {j-Diamonds} river saw the Norwegian player check the action over to Tan once again, and the Chinese player quickly tossed out a bet of 10,500 into a pot of a little over 12,000. With around 25,000 left in his stack, Torbergsen had a decision to make but eventually elected to fold leaving Tan to rake in the pot and climb to 80,000, which makes him the current chip leader, though it is still early days.

Lee Takes From Romain, Torbergsen Halts Slide

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Chiming Lee
Chiming Lee

We are now up to five tables and 27 players with France’s Arnaud Romain one of the new arrivals, though unfortunately the Frenchman has got off to a shaky start.

We caught Romain in action in a heads-up pot against China’s Chiming Lee on a flop of {j-Hearts}{a-Spades}{6-Clubs} just as Lee (big blind) checked the action over to Romain, who, sitting in middle position, appeared to have been the pre-flop aggressor and now led out for a bet of 3,000 into a pot of roughly the same.

Lee responded with a check-raise to 10,500, which Romain quickly called and the dealer burned and turned the {10-Diamonds}, which brought checks from both players.

The {6-Diamonds} river paired the board and with just over 24,000 in blinds and antes in the pot, Lee now led for a hefty 15,000. Romain did not take long to make the call and looked shocked when Lee rolled over {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} for rivered trip sixes, eventually pitching his cards into the muck face down and dropping down to 18,875 while Lee climbed to 64,000.

Another player whose tournament now appears to be going in the right direction is Norway’s Marius Torbergsen, who has halted his early slide by taking down a pot from Craig Hartman.

Pre-flop it was Zuo Wang who was the pre-flop aggressor, making it 1,000 to go from the cut-off and finding a caller in Hartman on the button before Tobergsen squeezed to 3,800 from the small blind.

After big blind Su Hao got out of the way and Wang also folded the action went heads-up to a flop of {j-Hearts}{3-Spades}{j-Spades}, which Torbergsen took down with a pot-sized continuation bet after Hartman folded immediately.

Romain Shoves on Lee

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

Arnaud Romain has managed to claw some of his chips back from Chiming Lee just before the end of level four. We caught the action on the turn on a board reading {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}{j-Hearts}{4-Spades} just a Lee, sitting in the big blind once again, led for roughly a pot-sized bet of 5,000.

Romain quickly moved all-in for another 14,250 more and Lee gave it up just as quickly, dropping down to 59,000 while Romain climbed back up to 25,000 just as the level drew to a close.

Chan and Torbergsen Bust, Torbergsen Re-enters, Trickett Joins

Level 5 : 250/500, 50 ante

There have been two recent eliminations both coming in quick succession with Malaysia’s Wai Leong Chan and Marius Torbergsen hitting the rail, the latter of whom fell at the hands of China’s Xuan Tan, who now has a stack of over 100,000.

Torbergsen has chosen to re-enter and is now sitting on a completely different table while Chan has left the tournament area, though can still choose to re-buy before the end of the day should he so desire.

Another new arrival is the UK’s Sam Trickett, fresh from Las Vegas via London to bring the total number of players up to 30 – including Torbergsen’s re-entry.

Hao Busts Hartman, Holz Joins

Level 5 : 250/500, 50 ante
Craig Hartman
Craig Hartman

There has been a third casualty with Craig Hartman falling at the hands of Su Hao, with all the chips finding their way into the middle pre-flop when a raising war developed between the two.

While we missed the exact betting it appeared that Hartman, sitting on the button, was the man to pull the trigger first moving all-in for a little over 38,000 as a three-bet and judging by Hartman’s wince when he got called rather quickly by Hao, this was not a good thing.

Craig Hartman: {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Su Hao: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

While Hartman was not in great shape the {10-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} put him in front for all of one street until the {q-Hearts} hit the turn to give Hao middle set. The {10-Spades} river gave Hao a full house and sent Hartman to the rail.

It did not take long to fill the US player’s seat, however, with German wunderkind Fedor Holz taking Hartman’s former seat and immediately raising Devan Tang’s big blind to start his tournament the way we imagine he means to continue.
