Slack Tops Day 1a of 2022 UKIPT London £1,100 Main Event; Talbot and Grafton Advance

Level 13 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Ben Slack
Ben Slack

The return of the PokerStars United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) to London is off to an excellent start. After 153 entries in the £2,200 High Roller set a new record for the iconic Hippodrome Casino in the English capital the day prior, the marquee £1,100 Main Event followed right into the footsteps with a solid turnout on the first of three starting days.

A total of 191 entries on Day 1a generated a prize pool so far and an even bigger field is expected for the second regular starting day, which follows on Friday, April 8, as of noon local time. Upon completion of 13 levels of 50 minutes each, it was Ben Slack who topped the leaderboard. He was certainly not slacking in the last two levels as he scored a double through Antoine Saout before knocking out Shay Salih to bag and tag 479,500.

Close behind on the leaderboard is Alberto Speranzoni with 465,000 while London resident Alexios Zervos (425,000) follows in third place. Above average stacks also belong to Ori Hasson, Youness Barakat, Alex Jennings and Gary Miller.

Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

Four PokerStars ambassadors also entered Day 1a and two of them made it through in Sam Grafton and Parker Talbot. After he found no joy on the first bullet, Talbot re-entered and became a short stack before securing multiple double-ups to advance with 198,000. The start for Grafton was much better but he needed a late surge to follow just behind Talbot on the leaderboard with 193,000 in chips.

Steve Enriquez and Benjamin Spragg were not as fortunate, as both were among the many notable casualties throughout the day. Enriquez was caught bluffing while Spragg's flopped trips sevens was no good when he ran into the full house of Denas Pranaitis. Both of them are expected to join the action once more on either Day 1b or the Turbo Heat 1c, in which Ramon Colillas shall also appear as well. The Spaniard was on the final table of the £2,200 High Roller and didn't jump into the £1,100 High Roller after his elimination.

As far as notable casualties on Day 1a were concerned, they included the likes of Alex Goulder, Kully Sidhu, Andy Wilson, David Lopez Llacer, Dan Wilson, Antoine Labat, Brandon Sheils, PokerStars Live at the Hippodrome Pro Chris Da-Silva, David Docherty, Matthew Davenport, and poker commentator Joe Stapleton, among others.

Most of them will very likely be back in action in the remaining two starting flights. Day 1b with 50-minute levels kicks off at noon local time while the Turbo Day 1c with 30-minute levels follows as of 6pm local time. The PokerNews live reporting team will be back then to provide as many of the key hands as possible for the first UKIPT stop since November 2016.

Salih Doubles; Saout Doesn't

Level 13 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Antoine Saout
Antoine Saout

Shay Salih raised and then called all-in for the last 51,000 when Joseph Lalor pushed all-in with the far bigger stack from one seat over.

Shay Salih: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Joseph Lalor: {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}

The {a-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs} flop propelled Salih into the lead, which he kept throughout the {q-Spades} turn and {9-Clubs} river.

Soon after, Antoine Saout was all-in for very few chips and earned three callers. On the {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop, Salih checked and so did Lalor. Alexios Zervos bet 7,500 and Salih folded, Lalor check-raised to 30,000 and Zervos came along.

The {a-Diamonds} turn and {10-Diamonds} river were checked for Zervos to flip over {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. Lalor had that beat with {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and Saout's {9-Hearts}{2-Clubs} were only briefly exposed. Zervos was left with the head shaking after seeing the cards of Lalor but remains the biggest stack at the table, which no longer contains Alex Goulder.

Sheils and Taylor Eliminated

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Brandon Sheils
Brandon Sheils

Brandon Sheils doubled through Ken Taylor and then limped in shortly after. Gary Miller raised to 6,500 on the button and Sheils opted to call. The duo headed to the {q-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop on which Sheils check-raised from 7,500 to 19,500 with Miller coming along.

After the {2-Hearts} turn, Sheils bet what appeared to be 52,000 with one T-500 chip behind for Miller to shove and Sheils to call it off.

Brandon Sheils: {k-Spades}{5-Spades}
Gary Miller: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}

Sheils needed a spade but the {k-Hearts} river was not enough.

One hand later, Ken Taylor got the last 6,000 in preflop and Mikhail Dinchev called with the {q-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Taylor only had the {7-Spades}{6-Spades} and found no help on the {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} to eliminate the next player.

Wilson Eliminated in Three-Way All-In

Level 11 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Dan Wilson
Dan Wilson

One of the anonymous players pushed all-in for 8,500 and Mauricio Ferreira Pais called from one seat over in the cutoff. Dan Wilson then went over the top on the button for his last 36,500, which Ferreira Pais called after some consideration.

A. A. S.: {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Dan Wilson: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Mauricio Ferreira Pais: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

The {a-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{3-Spades} flop left "A. A. S." and Wilson in dire shape and the {2-Clubs} turn sealed their fate, making the {2-Spades} river a formality.

Spragg Eliminated by Pranaitis

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Ben Spragg
Ben Spragg

On the tail end of a medium-sized pot until then, the board showed {a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{j-Spades}{2-Clubs}. That's when it all came to a crashing end when Benjamin Spragg and Denas Pranaitis got their chips in with the latter turning over the {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} for a flopped full house. Spragg briefly flashed the {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for trips sevens and the stacks were counted.

Pranaitis had 74,300 behind and that covered Spragg by a small margin to send the PokerStars ambassador to the rail.

Argelazi Felted by Lalor in Massive Pot

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Joseph Lazor
Joseph Lazor

Eliran Argelazi raised and Joseph Lalor called for Patrick Beuter to then three-bet and receive two calls. That created a pot of more than 40,000 to the {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop on which it checked to Beuter, who bet 10,000. Argelazi called and Lalor then raised to 50,000, forcing out Beuter.

Argelazi jammed for 114,000 total and Lalor called to create the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

Eliran Argelazi: {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Joseph Lalor: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

The {10-Clubs} turn improved Lalor to a flush and the {j-Spades} river knocked out Argelazi.

Talbot Receives Beer; Loses Chips

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Parker Talbot
Parker Talbot

Parker Talbot had lost a ton of chips previously, apparently all to the same opponent according to the previous table chat. He then received a fresh pint of beer and was all-in moments later for 4,300 from under the gun. One player called and Antoine Saout then reraised to 12,000 for the third player to call.

On the {j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop, Saout bet 7,000 to receive a call and bet the {5-Clubs} turn again to force a fold.

Parker Talbot: {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Antoine Saout: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

"No, why do you have a ten in your hand?" Talbot inquired. When the {10-Hearts} fell on the river, Talbot then added "ah, that's why" before heading to the registration desk. He shall be back soon, arriving at his new table with the fresh pint of beer in the hand.

Triple Up for Sitbon

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Julien Sitbon
Julien Sitbon

Down to fewer than one third of the starting stack, Julien Sitbon was all-in with the {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}. Alexander Zeligman had that barely covered and was in there with the {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} while Youness Barakat had both comfortably covered, revealing the {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}.

Barakat was fearing the worst while Sitbon had left his seat and predicted the nine of clubs would fall. Sure enough that's what happened on the {9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{k-Clubs}{a-Clubs} board as Sitbon tripled. Zeligman won the small side pot and bowed out shortly after.

Beuter Pushes Peebles Around

Level 5 : 200/500, 500 ante
Robin Peebles
Robin Peebles

Heads-up to the {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} river, Patrick Beuter bet 5,900 and Robin Peebles then raised to 12,500. Beuter wasted little time before moving all-in and that sent Peebles into the tank. Ultimately, no call followed and Beuter increased his stack without showdown.

Cherkit Doubles Through Saout

Level 3 : 100/300, 300 ante
Antoine Saout
Antoine Saout

Antoine Saout raised to 600 and received two callers including Chris Petty in the small blind. Nazim Cherkit then got the last 4,300 in from the big blind and Saout reraised to 20,600 for the vast majority of his stack. Petty inquired if it was a reraise and then folded for the showdown to proceed.

Nazim Cherkit: {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Antoine Saout: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

The {q-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades}{6-Clubs}{j-Hearts} board let Petty sigh as he mentioned in table chat to have folded pocket jacks.
