Day 1a Completed

Danes Lead After Day 1a of the 2017 Unibet Open Copenhagen Main Event, Van Lancker Survives

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
[Removed:158] Looking To Go Back To Back

Day 1a of the 2017 Unibet Open Copenhagen DDK 8,250 Main Event is in the books. 168 players each put up the Danish equivalent of €1,100 and 47 of them made their way to the second day. Chipleader is Tommy Vedelfort (244,600), who jumped over Sidsel Nebel (241,900) during the final hands of the day. The Danes came out in full force today and claimed five of the top six spots at the conclusion of the day.

2017 Unibet Open London winner [Removed:158] (46,200) is still in the hunt for his second title of the year. Other notables that made it through were Ioana Silvana (177,900), Bhavin Khatri (149,000), Peter Harkes (107,300) and Johnny Hansen (93,500).

The day started off with plenty of notables in the field, including a slew of eSports professionals who have been invited by Unibet to participate. Players with huge followings online, such as Craig "onscreenlol" Shannon and Sophia "Djari" White, gave poker a shot, but all except one fell short of making Day 2. Alan "Hotted89" Widmann was said exception: he survived the day with 41,800 and still has a shot to pull of the huge upset.

Two-time Unibet Open winner Mateusz Moolhuizen found himself on the rail halfway through the day. He was quickly joined by the likes of David Lappin, Daiva Barauskaite, Charlotte Van Brabander and Moolhuizen's girlfriend and vlogger Dehlia de Jong, who all ran out of chips in the later stages of the day.

In the penultimate level of the day, one of the biggest clashes of the day took place. It was Hedel who clashed in a huge hand with Joachim Kneivel, where the latter bit the dust in an upset. In a three-bet pot, Hedel was all in with king-jack against Kneivel's queen-nine on a king-jack-ten flop. The turn brought another jack to give Hedel an unbeatable full house and a fourth jack on the river was just icing on the cake. Hedel was poised to claim the overnight chip lead after that, but Vedelfort's last-minute surge prevented that from happening.

Day 1b will commence at at noon local time tomorrow. Players will once again start with 30,000 in chips and play ten levels of sixty minutes. Follow PokerNews throughout the week for more updates of this exciting event.

Clock Paused

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Tournament director Kenny Hallaert has paused the clock with twelve minutes remaining. The 49 remaining players will play four more hands until chips are bagged and tagged for the night.

Tureac Snipes Ostergaard

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Erik Ostergaard open-shoved 35,000 from middle position and Ovidiu Tureac called from the cutoff.

Erik Ostergaard: {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Ovidiu Tureac: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

No help for Ostergaard on {2-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} and he was eliminated.

Nebel Drags a Monster; Claims Chip Lead

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Joachim Kleiven opened the action from late position, Sidsel Nebel three-bet from the blinds and Kleiven called. The flop was {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{10-Spades} and Nebel checked as the preflop reraiser.

Kleiven bet 11,000, but Nebel had a trick up her sleeve as she check-raised to 27,000. Without much ado, Kleiven announced all in and put his stack of around 80,000 across the line.

Nebel gave it around ten seconds of thought before calling it off, creating the biggest pot of Day 1a.

Joachim Kleiven: {Q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Sidsel Nebel: {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

"Good luck," a jovial Kleiven pipped and he gave Nebel a fist bump.

However, everything changed on the {J-Clubs} turn. Mortified, Kleiven let out a shriek, realizing he was drawing dead just like that. The {J-Spades} on the river was icing on the cake, as Nedel improved to quad jacks to send Kleiven packing.

Vaara Doubles Through Lorenzen

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

No less than five players saw a flop together after James Mackenzie had opened the action. On the {6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} flop Mackenzie checked to Lorenzen, who bet 10,000. Behind Lorenzen, Ilari Vaara made it 25,000 to go and the other three players quickly folded.

Lorenzen gave it some thought before moving all in. Slightly frustrated, Vaara slammed his remaining 30,000 in the middle to make the call.

Kasper Lorenzen: {9-Spades}{7-Spades}
Ilari Vaara: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

Much to his surprise, Vaara was in fantastic shape to double up. The {A-Hearts} turn and {3-Hearts} river weren't one of the remaining sevens and Lorenzen had to part with a quarter of his massive stack.
