Koivisto Third in Chips After Day 1a, Sinclair and Van Brabander Among 24 Survivors

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Henri Koivisto is third in chips after Day 1a in Dublin
Henri Koivisto is third in chips after Day 1a in Dublin

The first of three starting days of the 2018 Unibet Open Dublin Main Event is in the books and the tournament is off to a decent start, as 97 players paid the entry fee of €1,100 at the Bonnington Hotel in the Irish capital. After ten levels of 60 minutes each, only 24 players bagged up and a trio pulled away at the top of the counts.

Elias Vaaraniemi participated only in his second Unibet Open Main Event ever and won his package for Dublin by earning challenge points on Unibet Poker. The Finn ended Day 1a as the chip leader with 379,200, beating Norway's Per Helge Gassand (367,000) and Henri Koivisto (330,500) for the top spot. Koivisto, an online Pot-Limit Omaha specialist with more than $270,000 in live cashes, entered late and earned his spot on the overnight podium with a late surge. In a key hand, he flopped a full house with jack-ten suited and fired three barrels, Graham Garside was unfortunate enough to flop an inferior full house with pocket tens and became the last casualty of the day.

Among the other big stacks and notables to bag and tag for the night were Thomas Fitzgerald (236,600), Kasper Mellanen (166,000), Pascal Rabany (124,000), Markus Heikkila (104,300), 2018 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event champion Jack Sinclair (64,700), Kevin "Kevmath" Mathers (55,000) and Charlotte Van Brabander (47,600).

Jack Sinclair
Jack Sinclair

Sinclair arrived just one day prior in Dublin and was on his way to the rail in the penultimate level of the night when he was all in and at risk with ace-ten against the pocket tens of Mark Rink and the pocket jacks of Guillaume Dupuy. However, an ace appeared on the river and Sinclair tripled up.

Several other well-known faces of the popular Unibet Open series were less fortunate and ran out of chips throughout the day. This includes former champions Martin Soukup and Mateusz Moolhuizen, along with 2018 EPT Barcelona 7th place finisher Mark Buckley, Irish poker legend Andy Black, Andrew Grimason, Andreas Hoivold, Georgios Tavoularis, Seamus Cahill, and Cathal Shine.

Two Unibet Poker ambassadors took to the felt in David Vanderheyden and Daiva Byrne, but both fell short of making Day 2 just yet. Byrne had dropped to 15 big blinds in the penultimate level of the night and lost a flip with pocket eights against the ace-jack suited of Nicolas Storm-Christensen.

All those that busted in the first of three starting days have another chance at making Day 2 in the turbo heat 1c, which kicks off on Friday, November 23, 2018 as of 2018. Another 10 levels will be played then, however, the level duration will be shortened to 20 minutes each.

Another three Unibet Open Side Event trophies were awarded throughout the day. The first tournament to finish was the €2,200 High Roller, followed by the €330 Deepstack Open and the €220 NLH Freezeout.

Benny Glaser Takes Down the €2,200 High Roller

Day 1 of the €2,200 High Roller wrapped up with 17 players out of 22 entries remaining and Unibet Poker ambassador Dara O'Kearney at the top of the leaderboard. The registration remained open and another five players opted to enter or re-enter, creating a field of 27 entries and a prize pool of €54,000. Only the top five spots were paid and notables to bust before the money included the Unibet Poker ambassadors David Lappin and Dara O'Kearney, Jack Sinclair, Kevin Killeen and UnibetPoker.fr ambassador Alexandre Reard.

Janos Kurtosi saw his aces cracked by the pocket treys of Benny Glaser and Glaser finished the job two hands later to send Kurtosi to the rail as last player without anything to show for. It didn't take long to set up the heads-up for the trophy between Glaser and Valentin Cristea. A topsy-turvy battle of more than two hours saw Glaser's 3-1 chip lead turned into a 1-3 underdog, but the three-time WSOP bracelet winner pulled back into a 7-1 lead. In the final hand, Glaser held king-jack suited and dominated Cristea with queen-jack. Three clubs on the board gave Glaser a flush and the title.

Four Irishmen Top the €330 Unibet Deepstack Open

The €330 Unibet Deepstack Open (DSO) attracted a field of 155 entries to create a prize pool of €46,500 and the top 23 spots were paid. Day 1 bagged up once the money bubble burst and 23 players remained to play down to a champion. Among those that cashed before the final table were the Unibet Poker ambassadors Dan Murariu (23rd place, for €520) and Fredrik Bergmann (17th place, for €660), Tomas Geleziunas (15th place, for €730) and Sesay Sulaiman (10th place, for €970).

Among the eight finalists were five Irishmen and they made up for the top four spots after notables such as Mihai Manole and Dennis Kleinleugemors departed in 8th and 5th place respectively. The final four cut a deal and played for another €1,200 to the winner. Sean O'reilly was the chip leader at the time of the deal agreement but ultimately finished second to Samuel Baneham while taking home the most money in the event.

Last but not least, the €220 NLH Freezeout attracted a field of 66 entries and the top 9 spots were paid. Finland's Jari Hurri ended up as the bubble boy, among those to cash were Aurelie Reard and Mick Graydon. Right after Graydon's exit in 3rd place, the remaining duo chopped and Apostol Beg held the chip lead to claim the trophy.

Day 1b of the €1,100 Main Event kicks off at 12 p.m. local time and a big field is expected with plenty of Unibet Poker ambassadors and Unibet Open esports gamers in action. Day 1c follows as of 9 p.m. local time and the survivors of all three starting days combine for Day 2 on Saturday. As usual, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide all the action.

Sinclair Triples Up With Magic River

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jack Sinclair
Jack Sinclair

Guillaume Dupuy raised from the cutoff and Jack Sinclair three-bet all in for 29,200 on the button. Mark Rink in the small blind gave it some thought and grabbed the all in triangle himself to move all in over the top. Dupuy called it off as the second-biggest stack to create a three-way all in,

Jack Sinclair: {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Guillaume Dupuy: {J-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Mark Rink: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

"That's not that bad," Sinclair said as he only needed an ace to secure a triple up. While the {K-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop and the {7-Spades} turn were of no help, Sinclair indeed got there on the {A-Clubs} river. His friend Feargus Murphy leaned over from the next table and joked "some guys are just too lucky," and the 2018 WSOPE Main Event champion Sinclair jumped back to an average stack in the penultimate level of Day 1a.

Byrne Eliminated by Storm-Christensen

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Daiva Byrne
Daiva Byrne

Fokke Beukers was eliminated a few minutes into the new level and Daiva Byrne dropped below the starting stack after clashing with Charlotte van Brabander in a medium-sized pot.

Picking up the action on the {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} turn, Byrne checked in early position and van Brabander on the button made it 5,700 to go with the pot at 20,000 already. Byrne reluctantly called and checked again the {2-Clubs} on the river. What followed was a bet of 11,000 by van Brabander and Byrne folded with around 24,000 behind.

A few hands later, Byrne was in the big blind and faced a button raise to 3,500 by Nicolas Storm-Christensen. Byrne jammed with pocket eights in the big blind and Storm-Christensen took the flip with {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}. The board came {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and the Dane paired his ace on the turn to send Byrne to the rail.

Andrey “reynad” Yanyuk Wins esports Battle Royale XI

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Andrey Yanyuk
Andrey Yanyuk

For the 11th time, the Unibet Open have hosted a special nine-handed SNG for popular and well-known esports gamers and it was Andrey “reynad” Yanyuk that scooped the title and payday of €4,700. A total of €10,000 was up for grabs and the SNG usually pays out the top three spots, however, a lengthy bubble period saw all four remaining players agree to take €300 off each payout from the top three and ensure €900 for the fourth-place finisher.

Lisa “STPeach” Vannatta became the first female gamer to cash in an esport SNG as part of the Unibet Open and she was followed by Alan “Hotted89” Widmann in third place. Scott “Sco” McMillan had already won the nine-max format previously and held a commanding lead over Andrey "reynad" Yanyuk in heads-up, but this time it wasn't meant to be for Sco who had to settle for the runner-up spot in the early morning hours.

Benny Glaser Wins the €2,200 High Roller!

Level 7 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Benny Glaser
Benny Glaser

While the field was reduced from five to the final two rather quickly once the money bubble burst, Benny Glaser and Valentin Cristea battled for more than two hours to determine a champion in the €2,200 High Roller. Glaser entered heads-up with a commanding 3-1 lead, but Cristea took over the lead when doubling with ace-queen versus pocket tens.

Eventually, Glaser was the 1-3 underdog but managed to win several pots and regain a commanding 7-1 lead. At blinds of 5,000/10,000 with 10,000 big blind ante, Glaser jammed with {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs} and Cristea called for his last 10 big blinds with the {Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}. The board came {9-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{7-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and Glaser won the trophy with a flush.

Unibet Poker ambassador Ian Simpson, who had railed for quite some time, was among the first to congratulate. Three-time WSOP bracelet winner and mixed game specialist Glaser won yet another trophy, this time in No-Limit Hold'em and will certainly take part on Day 1b of the €1,100 Main Event after a good night's sleep.

Moolhuizen Melted Away

Mateusz Moolhuizen

First to act, Mateusz Moolhuizen moved all in for the last 3,150 and the action folded around to the blinds.

"I am so tight, I haven't played a hand in two hours," Moolhuizen joked with a big grin on the face. Gabor Csire in the small blind was tempted, but then pointed to big stack Guillaume Dupuy in the big blind and sent his cards into the muck. Dupuy checked his cards and called instantly.

Mateusz Moolhuizen: {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Guillaume Dupuy: {A-Hearts}{9-Spades}

"I fold," Moolhuizen joked and found no help on the board {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{4-Spades} to bust minutes before the dinner break on Day 1a.

Black No More

Level 5 : 300/600, 75 ante
Andy Black

Andy Black quickly doubled his stack after entering in level two, however, he has been eliminated prior to the dinner break and two big stacks have emerged over on table four. One of them is Markus Heikkila, and he was kind enough to provide the details, as it was him that sent Black to the rail.

According to Heikkila, he held pocket jacks and Black flopped top pair with {Q-}{10-} on ten-high when the chips went in. There was no help on turn and river, and Black vanished. David Vanderheyden has also been eliminated on a different table.

The High Roller Bubble Bursts

Level 5 : 300/600, 75 ante
Janos Kurtosi
Janos Kurtosi

Benny Glaser has taken over a commanding lead with five players remaining in the €2,200 High Roller and was also responsible for the money bubble to burst. Before that, Jack Sinclair and Kevin Killeen had been eliminated and Janos Kurtosi ended up as the bubble boy.

In a battle of the blinds at 2,000/4,000/4,000 and an average of 135,000, Glaser clashed with Kurtosi and cracked the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} of his opponent with {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} thanks to a board of {K-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{10-Spades}. Two hands later it was all over for Kurtosi, who got his last few chips in with {A-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Glaser looked him up with the {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts} as initial raiser in the hand. The board came {K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} and Glaser paired his eight on the turn to reduce the field to the last five.

Next Side Event Update

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Dara O'Kearney
Dara O'Kearney

The €2,200 High Roller is down to the last nine players out of 27 entries and the top five spots will receive a portion of the €54,000 prize pool, the min cash is worth €5,050 and the winner can look forward to a payday of €20,690. No longer in contention for the cash prizes is Unibet Poker ambassador Dara O'Kearney, who started the day as the chip leader and "didn't win a single pot at all."

Among the notables still left are Seamus Cahill, Benny Glaser, UnibetPoker.fr ambassador Alexandre Reard, Kevin Kileen, as well as Michael Mazilu and Jack Sinclair. Mazilu and Sinclair busted early into the day and re-entered subsequently to take another shot at the High Roller title.

The €330 Deep Stack Open Cup is down to the last 13 players and yet another Unibet Poker ambassador fell short of glory. Former esports player turned poker professional Frederik Bergmann took home €660 for his efforts and will be playing on Day 1b of the €1,100 Unibet Open Dublin Main Event. Mihai Manole, John Keown, Dennis Kleinleugemors and Michael Farrelly are still in contention.
