Bryn Kenney Steamrolls 2019 USPO Event #7: $25K NLH to Win $450,000

It took Bryn Kenney an hour to roll over the 2019 USPO Event #7: $25K NLH final table, eliminating four out of his five competitors on his way to winning $450,000 and his first USPO title.

It marked Kenney’s second cash of the 2019 USPO after finishing 10th in Event #1: $10K NLH for $27,000, and while he still trails Stephen Chidwick, Sean Winter, and Cary Katz in the 2019 USPO overall points race, he’s now in a position to give them a run for their money headed into the final three events.

“This feels good. Last year was the only losing year I’ve ever had in my poker career and I felt as though I needed to follow it up with a home run year like I did in 2017,” Kenney said, who last month won the Aussie Millions Main Event. “It’s fun, the best thing is to win nice trophies in poker and this one looks great. It would make for a nice mantelpiece."

Final Table Action

Kenney’s dominating performance was sparked by a hand early on when action folded to Nick Petrangelo in the small blind and he shoved with jack-six suited. Kenney had king-eight in the big and call off for more than half his stack. He was rewarded for it as he won the hand to send Petrangelo out the door on just the third hand of the final table.

Not long after, Keith Tilston eliminated the short-stacked Nick Schulman – the result of queen-ten failing to get there against ace-eight – and then Kenney turned around and busted Tilston after shoving the button with pocket threes and holding against the ace-jack call off from the big blind.

Kenney proceeded to flop two pair with the old eight-three to take most of Ben Yu’s chips. Yu, who began the final table as a big chip leader, had flopped top pair and paid off big bets on both the turn and river. Yu would fall minutes later when his ten-six suited was flushed by Kenney’s queen-jack.

Kenney began heads-up play as a more than 10:1 chip leader against Jake Schindler and it took six more hands for him to finish things off. Schindler won the first five hands of heads-up play, all small pots, and in the final hand he got it in with ace-seven against Kenney’s king-jack. A king on the flop put an end to Schindler’s run and he fell in second place for $300,000.

Jake Schindler - 2nd Place
Jake Schindler - 2nd Place

Jake Schindler won the first five pots of heads-up play, all small ones, but the sixth and final hand went to Kenney.

It happened when Kenney limped the button and then called when Schindler moved all in for 785,000.

Kenney: {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Schindler: {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

Schindler got it in good but fell behind on the {2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop. Neither the {2-Hearts} turn nor {8-Spades} river helped Schindler and he was ousted in second place.

Ben Yu - 3rd Place

Ben Yu moved his last 175,000 all in from the small blind and Bryn Kenney, who has been steamrolling the final table, quickly called from the big.

Yu: {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Kenney: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}

Yu was behind and never caught up as the board ran out {3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{k-Hearts}{a-Spades}{9-Spades} to give Kenney a flush and his third knockout of the final table.

The final two players are now on a short break.

Level 20 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Keith Tilston - 4th Place
Keith Tilston - 4th Place

Bryn Kenney looked down at a pocket pair and simply moved all in from the button to put the pressure on the two small stacks in the blinds. Jake Schindler folded from the small but Keith Tilston called off for around 1.5 million from the big.

Kenney: {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}
Tilston: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}

It was a flip but Tilston had to improve to stay alive. That proved easier said than done as the board ran out {2-Clubs}{10-Spades}{k-Clubs}{7-Spades}{10-Diamonds} to give Kenney tens and threes.

Just like that, less than 30 minutes into play, a trio of players are gone and Kenney has taken the chip lead.

Action folded to the short-stacked Nick Schulman on the button and he moved all in for 630,000. Keith Tilston, who was also on the shorter side of things, then moved in over the top from the small blind and Ben Yu folded from the big.

Schulman: {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Tilston: {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

The {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop paired both players but Tilston remained out in front. The {K-Diamonds} turn gave Schulman a gutshot Broadway draw, but the {8-Spades} river as a blank.

In just the third hand of the final table, action folded to Nick Petrangelo in the small blind and he jammed for around 520,000. Bryn Kenney was in the big and pondered for a bit before making the call.

Petrangelo: {j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Kenney: {k-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Petrangelo was behind and looking for some help. The {3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop gave him a gutshot, which he would need to hit after the {K-Hearts} turn gave Kenney a pair of kings. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {3-Clubs} on the river, a brick for Petrangelo.
