18 Players Still in Contention for the Trophy at the 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event

Outside the Casino de Marrakech the temperature hit an astounding 42 degrees Celsius, but the action was heating up inside the tournament area just as well on Day 2 of the 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event.

256 players started the day, and from the very beginning, the play was fast and furious. Players busted left and right, and after just three levels of play, the field was almost halved, and the bubble play had commenced. Even during hand-for-hand play, it was hard to keep up with the action, as short stacks put their tournament lives on the line. Japan's Kazuma Fujiyama managed to find a crucial double on the stone cold bubble, as did Karim Benamrouche. That left the Spanish player with the pseudonym 'Ignapoker' with the unhappy privilege of being the bubble boy, as his flopped second pair was no good against a rivered set of eights from Frenchman Mounim Kaddouri.

The pace did by no means slow down after the bubble burst, and two hours later another 52 players had been escorted to the cashier because of a profound lack of chips. Many Winamax Pros and VIPs were among the last 80 players in the tournament, but when Davidi Kitai busted by running fours into the nines of Paul Guichard, it started quite the avalanche of profiles busting. Bruno 'Kool Shen' Lopes hit the rail shortly after, Gaelle Baumann followed when her Ace-Eight were no match for Jerome Barre's Ace-King, and less than an hour before the end of the day, Alexandre 'Alexonmoon' Luneau ran out of chips after having nursed a short stack for a while.

The very last hand of the day saw the biggest pot of the tournament go the way of Day 1c chip leader [Removed:445]. Haho called a reraise preflop with a pair of deuces and had no seconds thoughts about putting his entire stack in the middle after having flopped quads. Sofiene Belaid were holding a mere Ace-Jack high and was drawing dead before the turn in the pot of nearly 7,000,000 chips. The elimination of Belaid in 19th meant that play was halted for the day, and thus Haho bagged up the overnight chip lead by a margin of more than two million to nearest contender, Kazuma Fujiyama (5,000,000)

Rounding out the top-5 before are Hugo Larachiche (4,450,000), Hector Gonzales (3,700,000) and the biggest profile remaining in the tournament, former EPT Deauville runner-up Paul Guichard (3,500,000).

The 18 remaining contenders for the title will play down to a winner tomorrow. Because of daylight saving time going into effect in Morocco tonight, play will resume in exactly 12 hours from now; at 1 pm local time. When it does, there will be 37 minutes and 51 seconds left of level 25 with blinds of 30,000/60,000 and a running ante of 10,000. The remaining players are all guaranteed 44,000 MAD (€4,042) for their time in Marrakech, but with a cool one million Moroccan Dhiram on top, everybody will be having high hopes coming into Day 3 of the tournament.

Haho Wins Massive Pot with Quads to Bag Up 7,4 Million

Day 2 of the 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event ended just like it started: Fast and furious. In the last pot of the night [Removed:445] called a raise preflop, Sofiene Belaid squeezed to 425,000, and only Haho made the call.

The flop came {K-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, and with a million chips already in the pot, Belaid continued for 375,000. Haho made it 800,000 total, and with the action back on Belaid, he announced all-in for 3,200,000. Haho instantly called and flipped over {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}, and Belaid with {A-Hearts}{J-Spades} was drawing entirely dead even before the turn.

Haho didn't even have time to enjoy his newly found wealth, as his stack of 7,4 million chips went directly into the overnight bags. Talk about ending on a high note.

Quads Sends Benamrouche Packing: Larachiche Gets Away From Jacks

Rakesh Lalwani (right) eliminates Karim Benamrouche (left) with quads.

Karim Benamrouche made it 120,000 to go from the cutoff, Hugo Larachiche reraised to 350,000 on the button before Rakesh Lalwani in the small blind moved all-in for 1,250,000. Benamrouche committed his 925,000 chips, and the action was back on Larachiche, who didn't look overjoyed with the prospect of either calling or folding. Ultimately Larachiche folded {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} face up, and that was a good one at that as Lalwani turned over {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and Benamrouche tabled {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}.

The flop {5-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Spades} was best for Lalwani, and the {Q-Diamonds} on the turn sealed the deal for the Indian. The river {Q-Hearts} gave Lalwani quads for good measure, and Lalwani surged to the better half of the leaderboard.

Disaster Strikes for Kevin Droz

Level 23 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Ivan Deyra (left) holds the chip lead after decimating Kevin Droz (right)
Ivan Deyra (left) holds the chip lead after decimating Kevin Droz (right)

It's said that the higher you climb, the further you fall, and let me tell you, Kevin Droz just fell far. First he got into the biggest pot of the tournament against Ivan Deyra, when he five-bet {6-}{6-} to 800,000 and called it off for another million against Deyra's {K-}{K-}. That cost him 1,800,000, and the very next hand his remaining 10 big blinds were in the middle as well with {A-Hearts}{6-Spades} against the {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} of Bruno Soutavong. The board ran out {A-Clubs}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, and Droz hit the rail.

Shortly after Nicolas Mayot and Benjamin Truzman were out of chips as well, and that leaves 30 players still in contention for the trophy. The next player out receives 26,000 MAD (€2,400) while every other player will take home at least 32,000 MAD (€2,900).

Gaelle Baumann Exits After Brutal River King

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Gaelle Baumann is out of this year's Winamax SISMIX Main Event.
Gaelle Baumann is out of this year's Winamax SISMIX Main Event.

Gaelle Baumann is one of the most recent casualties at this 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event. Baumann was down to her last 16 big blinds and moved all-in from the small blind, only to find Jerome Barre in the big blind having picked up {A-}{K-}.

The Ace-King of Barre stayed ahead after a flop of three blanks, but an {8-} on the turn made Baumann a hefty favorite to score the double. It was not to be, however, as a {K-} hit the river, sending Baumann to the rail in 58th place.

Also free to enjoy the Moroccan sun is a former champion of this event, Jerome Sgorrano. He did manage to outlast both 2014 SISMIX-winner Davidi Kitai (76th place) and last year's champion Bruno Lopes (63rd place), but that is probably not much of a comfort for Sgorrano, who will have to be content with 53rd place and 15,500 MAD.

'Ignapoker' Bubbles the 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
With a rivered set of eights, Mounim Kaddouri were the man to burst the bubble at the 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event
With a rivered set of eights, Mounim Kaddouri were the man to burst the bubble at the 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event

The intensity rose to a whole new level as the remaining 126 started the hand-for-hand play, and it took three instances of all-in and a call before the players in the Casino de Marrakech tournament area could go on break knowing, they had just earned themselves at least a min-cash of 11,000 MAD (€1,000).

First off it was Japanese Kazuma Fujiyama at risk, at he shoved over a raise from Javier Garcirreynaldos Barral in the cutoff. Barral made the call with {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, and Fujiyama needed help with {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}. The board ran out {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{J-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, and a relieved Fujiyama fell back in his seat as he was awarded the pot.

The next hand Karim Benamrouche was all-in for his last 225,000 on a {5-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{A-Spades} board. Spanish player 'Fernando' had made the call with {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} but needed to improve to beat Benamrouche's {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and thus break the bubble. The river was a blank, and hand-for-hand continued.

It was instead a Spanish player with the pseudonym 'Ignapoker' that ultimately fell short of the money. Mounim Kaddouri raised to 24,000 from the button and Ignapoker had made the call out of the big blind. The Spaniard had then check-called 26,000 on the {J-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop, before the {4-Hearts} turn was checked through. The {8-Clubs} river saw Ignapoker check a third time before Kaddouri moved all-in. Ultimately Ignapoker made the call with {J-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, but they were no good against the {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} of Kaddouri, good for a rivered set.

It's not all bad for our Spanish bubble boy, though. Because the unlucky 126th place finisher was wearing a Winamax patch, he is awarded a seat in next year's edition of the Winamax SISMIX valued at 6,000 MAD. Not a bad consolation place.

We Have a New Sheriff in Town

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Bruno Soutavong
Bruno Soutavong

A new chipleader has emerged in the 2017 Winamax SISMIX Main Event. Bruno Soutavong started the day with an already healthy-looking stack of 445,000, but after just one level of play, the Frenchman has succeeded in surpassing 700,000 chips.

The latest addition to the stack came from Pierre Antoine Quignard, who couldn't find any of his many outs on a {J-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} board holding {9-Spades}{10-Spades} against the {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} of Soutavong. The two players did check down the {5-Clubs} turn and {A-Hearts} river, and the pot was kept relatively small.
