Coleman Seeking a Repeat After Bagging Day 1c Lead

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Maxx Coleman
Maxx Coleman

Last year at WinStar River Poker Series Main Event, Maxx Coleman topped a field of 1,164 players to take the whole thing down after a three-way chop sent him $750,000, the biggest chunk of the prize pool. It looked like a new champ was imminent after Coleman failed to make it through the first two starting days, but Coleman rebounded on Day 1c to bag the lead out of 44 players who advanced.

Coleman finished with 547,000, just ahead of 2016 November Niner Gordon Vayo (513,000). Layne Flack (433,000), Chino Rheem (312,000), Ray Qartomy (298,000), Rob Salaburu (202,000), and Kevin Eyster (165,000) also advanced.

Coleman got the better of Eyster in a pair of pots to surge up late in the night. First, he shoved in about 15 big blinds with {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} against an early-position raise from Eyster, who called with {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. Coleman was two cards from elimination after a brick flop, but an {a-Spades} on the turn gave him new life.

Then, with blinds at 4,000/8,000/1,000, Coleman opened for a min-raise and saw a player on the button three-bet to 36,000. Eyster was in the small blind and woke up with a cold four-bet to 84,000, and Coleman shoved all in for 277,000.

"How does this keep happening?" Eyster said with a sigh.

He called and saw his kings were trailing Coleman's aces, which he said was the fourth time he had run into the spot this tournament. The board ran out dead for both players and Coleman doubled through.

Eyster was at least able to recover and bag some chips. Some players who were not so fortunate included Scotty Nguyen, Allen Kessler, Calvin Anderson, David Paredes, Aaron Massey, David "ODB" Baker, Aaron Mermelstein, and WinStar ambassador Maria Ho.

Alas, those players are fresh out of chances as the conclusion of Day 1c means the Day 2 field is now set. The 434 who turned out for Day 1c make it 1,054 players total, and 10 percent of them will return Monday at 1 p.m. local time with blinds rolling back to Level 18 (4,000/8,000/1,000), where Day 1b left off. Coverage will be back here on PokerNews once again.

The Fourth Time in Three Days

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Maxx Coleman
Maxx Coleman

Maxx Coleman min-raised to 16,000 and saw a player on the button make it 36,000. Kevin Eyster raised to 84,000 in the small blind, and Coleman shoved for 277,000. The in-between player mucked and Eyster sighed.

"How does this keep happening?" he asked himself.

He called and saw his {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} was crushed by {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}.

"The fourth time in three days," Eyster muttered.

The board ran out {q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, and Eyster was dead on the turn.

Eyster and Vayo Lock Horns

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Kevin Eyster
Kevin Eyster

Kevin Eyster opened for 11,000 in middle position, and November Niner Gordon Vayo made it 30,000 to go from the button. Eyster called and the two checked to the river as {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{k-Clubs} hit the felt. At that point, Eyster finally reopened the betting with 45,500. Vayo thought a bit, got the count, and then raised to 120,000. That brought a grin from Eyster, and he leaned back in thought.

"You got those KKs huh?" he said. "Son of a bitch..."

Eyster finally slid his cards in and flipped over the {10-Hearts}. Vayo smiled and dragged the pot.

Ray Qartomy Makes the Right Call Against Tim James

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 400 ante
Ray Qartomy
Ray Qartomy

A pot of around 100,000 between Ray Qartomy and Tim James caught our attention. The board was {10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, Qartomy checked and James was all in for easily 150,000. Qartomy called, rolled over {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for two pair and James tabled {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. He needed help on the river to stay alive but bricked when it came {9-Clubs} and was eliminated.

Qartomy had to call the floor to color up his massive stack and it looked to about 650,000.

Kevin Eyster Soars Into Lead

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Kevin Eyster
Kevin Eyster

We missed the preflop action but we found Kevin Eyster, John Gordon and a third player at a flop of {A-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades}. Eyster bet, the unknown player moved all in. Gordon tanked for a bit, mucked and the cards were tabled.

Eyster: {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Player: {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}

The board finished {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}, Gordon regretted his fold, the player was eliminated and Eyster stacked around 400,000 after the hand.

It's All Over, Baby

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Scotty Nguyen
Scotty Nguyen

Rahul Deevara opened to 2,700 early and called a three-bet to 8,200 from big blind Scotty Nguyen. The flop came {q-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, and Nguyen fired 7,000. Deevara made it 18,300.

"All right, you got it," Nguyen said, sliding his remaining 40,000 or so in.

Deevara quickly called and showed {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} for a set. Nguyen stared for about 10 seconds before turning over {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. The self-styled "Indian Poker Wizard" made a boat on the {9-Hearts}{9-Spades} runout and Nguyen told him "nice hand" before exiting.

Minkin Busts Tolbert

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Clint Tolbert
Clint Tolbert

Kelly Minkin bet 11,000, which looked to be about a pot-sized wager, out of the small blind on a flop of {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}. Clint Tolbert moved all in from middle position for what looked like a little under 30,000, and Minkin quickly called.

Minkin: {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Tolbert: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

The {j-Diamonds} turn completed both of Minkin's draws but she still needed to fade a fourth diamond on board that would make Tolbert a better flush. The {a-Hearts} river wasn't enough for the RunGood Pro.

Folding Top Two to Chino

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Chino Rheem
Chino Rheem

A player fired 6,000 into a 7,500 pot from middle position, and Chino Rheem made it 20,000 in the cutoff on the {6-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop. A third player folded. The bettor tanked awhile and then mucked {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} face-up, eliciting gasps from the table.

"Will you show me?" he asked Rheem.

"I'll just put it to you this way: you had the best hand," Rheem said. "I could have beat you, but you had the best hand."

Aaron Massey Already Double Starting Stack

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Aaron Massey
Aaron Massey

Aaron Massey opened to 300, one opponent called, the player on the button bumped it 900 and then the big blind called. Action gets back to Massey and he popped it to 3,000. The first caller mucked, the button played back and made it 5,700. The player in the big blind called, Massey called and the flop fell {8-}{6-}{2-}.

Action checked around, the turn comes {K-} and Massey bet 4,000. Both players called, the river came {6-} and the big blind shoved all in. Massey flatted, the button mucked {A-}{K-} face up, the big blind tabled {7-Spades}{6-Spades} for trips and Massey took the pot holding pocket kings for a full house.

Welcome to Day 1c of WinStar River Poker Series Main Event

WinStar River Poker Series Day 1b
WinStar River Poker Series Day 1b

Two Day 1 flights are in the books in the $2.5 million guaranteed, $2,500 Main Event at WinStar River Poker Series, located just north of Dallas on the Texas-Oklahoma border.

Thus far, 53 players have punched Day 2 tickets, advancing to Monday with chips securely placed in bags. Andy Philachack and Mike Wang have paced their respective fields the last two days, with Philachack holding the overall lead near 1 million in chips.

The total number of players through two Day 1s is up to 624, so there is still a ways to go for the tournament to reach the guarantee. That said, Day 1c is expected to be the biggest starting flight yet, so whether the tournament can match last year's 1,164 runners will be something to keep a close eye on.

Once again, things begin at noon local time today with each player starting with a stack of 25,000 and blinds beginning at 50/100. Unlimited reentry is allowed through the dinner break that follows Level 9, and play is scheduled to continue until just 10 percent of the field remains, however late that may be. The past two days have finished well past 2 a.m., so expect a long, action-packed day of poker, with all of the relevant updates available right here on PokerNews.
