Greenblatt With a Straight and Piles

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Alex Greenblatt bet 8,000 from the big blind on an {8-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} board, and a player on the button thought briefly and called. Greenblatt tabled {10-}{9-} for a pair that turned into a straight, and he looks to have one of the more formidable stacks in the room at the moment.

However, he'll have some stiff competition soon as fellow American pro Kevin Eyster just grabbed a seat at that table. Eyster has a long history of success both live and online, and he made a deep run into the last few tables here last year, finishing 16th for $17,555.

Maria Ho Busts in Huge Three-Way Pot

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Maria Ho
Maria Ho

The pot was built quickly as Alex Greenblatt opened to 1,800 and AJ Nimer three-bet from his direct left to 4,700. Gary Widener called and Maria Ho shoved all in for 25,500. Greenblatt folded and Nimer went all in for a little more, 29,850.

Widener, who had both covered, asked for a count and then called with {8-}{8-}. Ho had {q-}{q-} and Nimer had {a-}{k-}.

When the flop came {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Hearts} Nimer took the lead and didn't look back. The turn, {3-Spades}, and the river, {5-Diamonds}, completed the board and sent Ho to the rail, while Nimer earned what was essentially a triple up.

Hessami Finds the Call Button to Bust Berry

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

We found Will Berry all in for 20,150 into a pot of about 25,000. He was in position against Nemo Hessami, and the board was {q-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Clubs}.

"Aces or kings with a heart?" Hessami wondered aloud. After about a minute of thought, he announced a call.

Berry tabled {a-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for an ace-high bluff, and Hessami took it down with {q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

Jose Montes' River Shove is Good Enough

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jose Montes
Jose Montes

Jose Montes was on the button and facing a raise to 2,000 preflop. He called.

The flop came {k-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and he called a bet of 2,500. He called 4,000 on the turn when the {7-Clubs} came and his opponent checked the river when the {10-Clubs} hit the board.

Montes went all in for 10,400 and his opponent couldn't find a call. Montes won the pot and popped back above starting stack with just over 30,000.

Updated Chip Counts; Spinella Felted Again

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

We found Anthony Spinella all in for about his last 2,000 or so. He had {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and was racing with a player who had {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}.

"If I don't win this, I should just go home," Spinella said cheerfully.

He missed the flop as three Broadway cards hit.

"Guess I better pack my bags."

Indeed, as two more bricks fell to leave Spinella felted again.

Eddie Melissari Catches Up Quick

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante

Eddie Melissari saw the {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{9-Spades} flop with two other players and checked. His opponent to the left checked before another player bet 3,000. Melissari raised to 10,000 and his opponent shoved all in for 29,475. Melissari asked for a count and doubled checked the amount before calling.

The all in player showed {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a straight.

"I know what you got," Melissari said showing {a-Spades}{k-Spades} for a pair and a flush draw.

The turn wasted no time, brining the {6-Spades} and the river was the {6-Clubs}.

At the same time Melissari and his opponent were vocal about their thoughts on the turn card.

Melissari just let out a growly, "Yeeesss!"

Meanwhile his opponent let out a "Damnit," shortly before he headed to the rail.

Steven Bluffs Most of it Off

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Brandon Steven
Brandon Steven

After a raise to 1,400 and two calls, Brandon Steven made it 7,000 in the big blind. Only small blind Aaron Mermelstein continued, seeing a {7-Spades}{q-Hearts}{q-Spades} flop. Mermelstein checked and called 7,000. He checked the {2-Hearts} turn and Steven shoved all in. Mermelstein called it off in a hurry for 14,250 but had just {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. His read was on though, as Steven could only muster {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}. The river was a {6-Clubs} and Mermelstein doubled.

Ho Firing Blanks Again on Day 1b

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante

After a fruitless Day 1a, WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho just busted on Day 1b. It looked like she lost most of her chips with {a-}{q-} against a player with {a-}{5-} who paired his five. Left with dust, Ho jammed a couple of times and won and then stuck her 4,600 or so in over a cutoff limper, who called with {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Ho held {8-Spades}{7-Spades} but found nothing but bricks on the {k-Spades}{2-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{a-Hearts} board.

At other tables, Anthony Spinella and Sam Phillips grabbed seats with fresh stacks, the former on a reentry. Ho also reentered immediately.
