Patrick Serda Leads After Penultimate Day of Canadian Poker Championships

Day 3 of the partypoker LIVE Canadian Poker Championships at Playground Poker Club has come to an end after eight levels of play. The field has been narrowed from 145 to just the final 21. Taking the chip lead into the final day is Patrick Serda.

The big story on Day 3 was Serda's climb to the top. Serda returned from the final break with 45 million in chips and went on a rampage that swallowed up Ari Engel, Kevin Schulz, and Robert Taylor. By the time he reached the next level, Serda had tripled his stack and had over 15% of the chips in play, with 24 players left.

Serda ended the night on 90,900,000 after a slight dip during the final level of play. The start of Day 3 chipleader Sebastien Labbe stayed strong, bagging second-best with 72,300,000. Julian Volpe (67,200,000), Joel Giguere (62,900,000), and Kevin Rivest (61,700,000) round out the top five.

Canadian poker legend Mike Leah is still in the hunt and sitting much safer after a couple of late-day double ups. Leah capped off the night with 54,100,000. Playground Player's Club member Chanracy Khun (34,200,000), WPT Champion Ema Zajmovic (24,000,000), and American Pro Kyle Bowker (11,500,000) are just a few of the hopefuls left vying for the title.

partypoker freeroller Richard Verdon saw his dream run come to an end just before the dinner break. Verdon had run up a free satellite ticket all the way to Day 3 of the Main Event. Verdon fizzled out in 90th place but picked up $4,000 for a sweet return.

Two former WSOP Main Event champions bowed out during the day as Ryan Riess finished 69th for $5,000 and Jonathan Duhamel departed in 115ht earning $3,000. Alex Foxen (30th - $10,000), Pascal Lefrancois (32nd - $10,000), Ari Engel (39th - $9,000), Ruben Perceval (58th - $6,000), Sam Chartier (71st - $5,000), and Jason Lavallee (78th - $5,000) are just a few of the notables no longer in contention.

Day 4 is set to get underway at 1 p.m. local time and play will continue until the winner of the Canadian Poker Championships is crowned. There will be a live-streamed feature table broadcast kick off about 30-minutes into play with the entirety of Day 4 shown on stream.

Rivest Five-Bets Preflop

Level 25 : 400,000/800,000, 800,000 ante

Chanracy Khun raised to 1,700,000 from under the gun and action was on Kevin Rivest on the button. He eyed up Khun's stack and decided to put in a three-bet to 4,900,000. Action moved back to Khun and he went into the tank before putting in a four-bet to 10,500,000. Rivest wasted no time and five-bet to 18,400,000. Khun snap-mucked and Rivest scooped a healthy pot without even seeing a flop.

Level 25 : 400,000/800,000, 800,000 ante

Johanssy Joseph raised to 2,000,000 on the button and Sam Phillips three-bet shoved all-in from the big blind. Joseph snap-called for his remaining 20,900,000 chips.

Joseph tabled {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}, well ahead against Phillips' {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

The board ran out {j-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{4-Spades} and Joseph held to double through late in the day.

Pinoudis Doubles Through Bowker

Level 25 : 400,000/800,000, 800,000 ante

Michael Pinoudis was on the button and shoved for 12,500,000 and Kyle Bowker was in the big blind and decided to look him up.

Pinoudis was at risk with {a-Spades}{10-Spades}, up against Bowker's {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for a coin flip.

The flop came {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Pinoudis took over the lead after pairing his ace. The turn was the {k-Clubs} and Bowker needed to hit an eight to deliver the knockout but the river was the {5-Diamonds} and Pinoudis held on.
