Day 1b Ends with Williamson, Tamm in Control

Tournament felt
Tournament felt

More than 12 hours ago, the region's most respected poker players gathered inside Casino de Marrakech for Day 1b of World Poker Tour Marrakech, presented by Chilipoker. The field was smaller than expected but chock full of players with a taste for big pots and fast action. The pace worked to the advantages of Johan Williamson and Erik Tamm, who ended the day at the top of the chip counts with 192,500 and 178,900 respectively. Santiago Terrazas, Guillaume de la Gorce, Davidi Kitai, and Roger Hairabedian all also finished above 100,000. None of them, however, approach the giant chips stacks that Day 1a's chip leaders will be bringing to the felt when the fields combine for Day 2 on Monday. With 327,900, Sebastian Homann will unbag the most chips, followed by Nicholas Levi with 287,700.

Bertrand "ElKy" Grospellier rode the short stack all day, but fell short of making Day 2. Ludovic Lacay and David Benyamine took the opposite approach, busting as quickly as possible and returning to the cash game tables. Carlos Mortensen, Arnaud Mattern, Liz Lieu, and Thomas Bichon also hit the rail before the day was done.

The 31 players still standing at the end of the night will join with the 51 Day 1a survivors on Monday at 1:00 pm to play ever closer to the title. Join us then as we bring you the latest from sunny Morocco.

A Long Day's Work Ruined

Franck Kalfon will be surviving to Day 2, although just barely. And he's not in a good mood about it.

Sitting with about 100,000 with three hands to go, Kalfon ended up involved in a couple of huge pots right at the end of the day, coming out on the bad end of both. In the final one, player whom he had barely covered ended up all in before the flop versus Kalfon. Kalfon had {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}, but his opponent had {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}.

The board ran out {8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Clubs}, and Kalfon was left cursing his bad fortune, ending the day with just 6,500.

Three More Hands

There are 10 minutes left in the last level of the night. The clock has been stopped, a card drawn, and three more hands will be played before they stop for the night.

Right now there are 32 players remaining (from today's starting field of 85), with the average stack among them just under 80,000 chips. Interestingly, yesterday saw 51 players survive a field of 137, which meant that group ended with an average stack of just a little over 80,000 -- almost the same!

Moving Up the Chart(ier)s

After an open to 2,800, the small blind and Sam Chartier in the big blind went to a {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop three-handed. All three of them checked to get to the {9-Clubs} turn. The small blind took the opportunity to bet 3,700. Chartier looked like he might make things interesting, but with a glance at the original raiser, he opted just to call. But the other guy folded. The river was the {j-Diamonds}, and the small blind checked. Chartier gave him a quizzical look and eyed his stack, betting enough to put him all in. With that, he took down the hand and moved up to 60,000.

Big Roger Makes a Big Fold

Roger Hairabedian -- a.k.a. "Big Roger" -- is a local player here at Casino de Marrakech. He's done well thus far today, gradually building his stack up and over the 90,000-chip mark.

Just now Hairabedian opened with a raise to 3,000, then a relatively short-stacked opponent to his left reraised to 7,400. It folded back around to Hairabedian who made the call.

The flop came {3-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, and Hairabedian led out with a bet of 6,400. His opponent thought for a half-minute, then set his remaining stack out before him -- 17,400 total.

Hairabedian went deep into the tank -- more than three minutes -- then folded his hand face up: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. An interesting fold from Big Roger.

He preserves a stack of 81,000 as we cross the halfway point of the last one-hour level.

A Portal to More Chips

[Removed:13] opened to 2,600, and the player in the cutoff called. Then on the button, Alexia Portal made it 9,100 to go. Guiglini made a face and folded, but the cutoff elected to call. The flop fell {q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}, and he checked to Portal. She bet 15,000, and he folded without another thought. She's up to 73,000 and looking very comfortable with her spot at the table.

One Hour to Go

Just one more hour of poker left to be played tonight. There are 34 players remaining from today's Day 1b starting field, all hoping to join the 51 who made it through Day 1a when the tourney continues tomorrow.
