Boeken and Stephensen in Strong Contention After Day 1a of WPT Amsterdam

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Noah Boeken
Noah Boeken

The first starting day of the first-ever World Poker Tour Amsterdam €3,300 Main Event was a big success, and it was Fredrik Andersson who came out on top with a stack of 228,100 in chips. The Swedish chip leader came out of nowhere and racked up a big lead, mainly due to lots of aggression in the last levels of the day.

A total of nine levels were played and 54 players remained from the 130 total entries on Day 1a. Among the big stacks moving on to Day 2 was top local player Noah Boeken with 195,200. World Series of Poker Main Event runner-up Felix Stephensen bagged 114,400.

At the start of the day, we immediately spotted Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi and Anthony Zinno battling it out. Mizrachi, winner of two WSOP bracelets and two WPT events, did not have a good day and busted out twice, while Zinno, a three-time WPT champion in his own right, survived the day with 47,700 in chips.

Dutch poker legend Rob Hollink entered the event as well, and after a relatively quiet day he made it through with 48,000 in chips. Former Master Classics of Poker Main Event winner David Boyaciyan busted out once, and he will likely reenter on Day 1b. The same goes for Paul Newey, as the Big One for One Drop finalist couldn't get anything going.

The €6,000 High Roller event did not finish before the Main Event started, and Jack Salter battled it out against Jason Wheeler in heads-up play while Day 1a started up. In the end, it was Wheeler who won the match, and he took home €125,000. Both players also made it through Day 1a, as Salter bagged up 56,100 and Wheeler survived with 92,800.

One of the hottest players on Day 1a was without question Samantha Abernathy, who bullied the guys on her table around pretty badly. Abernathy showed a lof of aggression and held the chip lead for quite some time. In the end, the lone lady in the field survived the day with 92,700 chips.

In other news, Jorn Walthaus busted out in the early goings, but he returned and finished the day on 36,900 in chips. Dutch WSOP bracelet winner Marcel Vonk busted out as well, when his aces got cracked in the fourth level of play. Vonk will reenter on Day 1b as well, as he decided to not enter again on Day 1a. Ludovic Geilich started the day very strong and even got his stack up to 130,000. The end of the day was a lot less fortunate for him, though, as he called off a large portion of his stack with pocket kings. Geilich was crippled, and survived the day with 47,400, while his opponent, Monty Albadawi, jumped up the ranks and bagged up 189,700.

Play will resume on Tuesday at 2 p.m. local time, and a big field is expected for Day 1b. Please stay tuned to PokerNews.com for more coverage of this event, as we will be here with you for the duration.

Boeken Busts Mizrachi in Crazy Hand

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Noah Boeken
Noah Boeken

Noah Boeken was busy texting, but we almost missed him as he was hiding behind some huge towers of chips. Upon request Boeken told us about a hand which happened quite some time ago.

After two limps (one of 'em being Michael Mizrachi), Boeken raised it up to 2,000. A player in position called, the first limper called, and Mizrachi called. The four of them saw a flop of {J-}{6-}{3-} rainbow and action checked to Boeken who bet 4,500. The first player folded, both players that had limped before the flop called again.

The {2-Diamonds} on the turn made for a second diamond. Again both players checked to Boeken and the Dutch Master Classics of Poker champion bet 15,000. The first player shoved all in, Mizrachi called all in for 14,000, and Boeken called the little extra.

Limper: {10-}{10-}
Noah Boeken: {A-}{J-}
Michael Mizrachi: {4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

Boeken needed to fade tens, diamonds and fives, and did so with the {7-Hearts} on the river. That pot catapulted Boeken to the top of the field, eliminated Mizrachi, and crippled the third involved player. Boeken's good friend Joep van den Bijgaart re entered and is playing 30,000 again.

Geilich's Great Hand

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Ludovic Geilich
Ludovic Geilich

Ludovic Geilich sits on a massive stack, and he just told us the story of how he managed to acquire this stack.

Geilich raised to 900 from middle position with {9-}{8-} and a player called on the button and the big blind called as well. The flop brought out {8-}{9-}{6-} with two hearts and the player in the blinds checked after which Geilich bet 1,800.

The player on the button made it 4,500 and the big blind folded after which Geilich called.

The turn was another {8-} and Geilich check-called 7,275. On the river the {10-Clubs} hit and Geilich checked again.

The button bet 12,000 with 11,000 behind and Geilich moved all in. His shove got called, but his opponent mucked when he showed {9-}{8-} for a full house.

Abernathy Does it With Seven-Deuce

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante
Samantha Abernathy
Samantha Abernathy

"She's been crushing all of us," Floris van der Ven told us with a wry smile, while looking over at Samantha Abernathy, as his stack totals just 13,000.

Abernathy, sunken away in deep though while listening to some music, pulled out one of her earbuds and tilted her head up in a enquiring motion.

"He said that you're crushing us," Thomas Brader laughed, answering Abernathy's silent question.

"With seven-deuce," Abernathy added with a smile, and Van der Ven explained to us what happened.

Van der Ven went on to say that he raised holding ace-queen from the cutoff, and both the button and big blind, Abernathy, called. The flop came down {J-}{2-}{9-} and all three players checked.

On the turn another {9-} hit and Abernathy lead out for 1,200, and only Van der Ven called. The river was a blank and both players checked, after which Abernathy raked in the pot showing {7-}{2-}.

"It's not a big pot, but still," Van der Ven added, as he's facing an uphill battle with a small stack. Abernathy meanwhile is the chip leader of the tournament.

Mizrachi Eliminated and Zinno's Stack Cut Down as De Vries Hits Miracle Card

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Michael Mizrachi and Anthony Zinno
Michael Mizrachi and Anthony Zinno

One of our colleagues from the World Poker Tour blog hasted back to the media room, and told us of a big hand he had just witnessed. Michael Mizrachi, Anthony Zinno, and Hessel de Vries got their chips in before the flop with the following holdings:

Hessel de Vries: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Anthony Zinno: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}
Michael Mizrachi: {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}

The board ran out {A-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}, changing just about everything. De Vries went from top dog to trailing, Zinno found the ace he was looking for, and Mizrachi had a gutshot to keep his hopes up.

The {8-Hearts} hit the turn, not doing anything for anyone.

The {K-Spades} on the river was anything but a blank though, helping De Vries win the hand. “Wow! A one outer! Sick.” said De Vries. The dealer checked all three stacks, and it turned out Mizrachi was eliminated, de Vries had doubled to 40,000, and Zinno was cut down to 18,000.

Boeken Makes a Big Call

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Noah Boeken
Noah Boeken

The player in second position opened and Elliot Smith made the call. Noah Boeken on the button squeezed to 1,800 and the big blind cold called. The initial raiser gave up, Smith called.

Three players saw a flop of {2-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and action checked around. All three of them checked on the {2-Diamonds} as well and they saw the {9-Hearts} river for free. The big blind checked and Smith bet 2,000. Boeken called from the button.

The big blind had much bigger plans though, quite unexpectedly check-raising to 10,000. Smith frowned and folded, but Boeken wasn't so eager to lay his hand down. He shrugged, leaned forward, and called after some thirty seconds of tanking.

The big blind reluctantly rolled over {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} for a bluff. Boeken showed {K-Hearts}{8-Spades} and took it down.

Birthday Girl Abernathy in Great Shape

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Samantha Abernathy
Samantha Abernathy

We just spotted Samantha Abernathy in today's event, and it happens to be her birthday. So, happy birthday to you Samantha!

Now let's get down to business, as the hand we watched with Abernathy did not go so well for her.

The action started on Erik van den Berg who raised to 400 and Floris van der Ven made the call. The third player that got involved three-bet from the button to 1,575 and Abernathy called from the big blind.

Van den Berg and Van der Ven both folded, and the action was heads up.

The flop brought out {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and both players checked. On the turn the {10-Diamonds} hit and Abernathy bet 2,300. Her opponent made the call and the river was the {9-Diamonds}. Both players checked this time around and Abernathy showed {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}. Her opponent tabled {K-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and his pair of fours took this pot down.

With 80,000 chips however, Abernathy is still in good shape.

€6,000 High Roller: Jason Wheeler Wins the WPT Amsterdam High Roller (€125,000)

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Jason Wheeler and Bryn Kenney
Jason Wheeler and Bryn Kenney

It wasn't a long Day 3, and not a lot of hands were played, but Jason Wheeler pretty much won all of them. In the last hand, Jack Salter was down to 545,000 and he open-shoved from the button. Wheeler made the call.

Jason Wheeler: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Jack Salter: {K-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

Wheeler's good friend Bryn Kenney leaned over, and Wheeler announced what the situation was. "Threes against king-seven," he said.

Wheeler made a small fist pump when the flop was spread {3-Spades}{5-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, but he wasn't out of the woods just yet.

"A four would be a fun card" Salter said.

The {Q-Diamonds} hit the turn and Salter already put down his head a little. The {8-Clubs} on the river was a blank, and Wheeler and Salter shook hands.

Salter congratulated Wheeler, with the latter elated to finally win in Holland.

"Finally get that trophy in Amsterdam!" he exclaimed.

Wheeler took home €125,000, and Salter got €90,000 for his runner-up finish. Wheeler told the tournament organization he plans on entering the Main Event later today, but first he's going to hang out with Kenney on this beautiful day in the city.

We spoke to Wheeler right after he won the last hand:

Welcome to the First Ever World Poker Tour in Amsterdam

Holland Casino Amsterdam
Holland Casino Amsterdam

In about two and a half hours, the first-ever World Poker Tour Main Event in Holland will commence. After a successful WPT National event in Holland Casino Valkenburg last year, won by Niels van Leeuwen and a third-place finish for Marcel Lüske, it's now time for the real deal with a complete poker festival in the nation's capital of Amsterdam.

The WPT festival in Amsterdam is already in full swing, as the €6,000 High Roller started on Saturday and the €330 WPT Warm Up event completed yesterday.

The High Roller was scheduled as a two-day event, but there are still two players remaining, and they'll battle it out for the first-place prize of €125,000 today. Jason Wheeler and Jack Salter will go head to head at 2 p.m. local time, and PokerNews.com will bring you the latest news on that event as well.

Also at 2 p.m. local time, the WPT Main Event will have its first of two flights. With a buy-in of €3,300, Main Event players will have the option to reenter once each day. The starting stack is 30,000, and the maximum capacity per day is 150 players.

PokerNews.com will be in Amsterdam the entire week to bring you all the updates you can ask for. With photos from acclaimed WPT photographer Alin Ivanov and videos from the WPT team, PokerNews.com will be your one-stop shop this week for everything WPT Amsterdam!

The level duration for both starting days is 60 minutes, going to 90-minute levels from Day 2 onwards. It's up to tournament director Christian Scalzi's discretion to decide how many levels will be played on Day 1a and 1b. We are, however, expecting to see at least eight levels, and possibly 10.
