Day 1b of the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic Main Event has been completed after 10 one-hour levels were played out in the luxurious Merit Casino, Kyrenia, Cyprus.

By the time registration had closed at the end of Level 6 there were a total of 164 players who had exchanged $4,400 for 30,000 tournament chips and the chance to become a WPT champion. Just before 1:00 am local time renowned tournament director Matt Savage call time on proceedings and just 65 players had chips that needed bagging and tagging; the dream of WPT glory had ended for 99 of our starters.

The title of end of day chip leader is one that every poker tournament player want to lay claim to and it was a fiercely fought contest here on Day 1b. From the moment he sat down at the felt, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi terrorized his opponents and quickly found himself sat behind a pile of chips worth over 120,000. Mizrachi dropped off the pace towards the latter part of the day but he still finished with a respectable 54,300 stack.

The honor of being chip leader tonight goes to David “Chino” Rheem. Rheem is a well-known figure on the poker circuit having reached the final table of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event (he finished seventh), having won the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Poker Classic; also in 2008 and more recently winning the inaugural Main Event of the Epic Poker League. Rheem was his usual vocal self through the day but he was backing up his table talk with his poker skills; and he also ran amazingly well. At different points throughout the day he cracked pocket jacks with pocket tens, then cracked pocket aces, again with a pair of tens. Then on the last hand of the night he had a 6,000 turn bet and a 20,000 river bet called on a {q-Spades}{8-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{5-Spades} board whilst holding {j-Clubs}{8-Clubs} to put him well clear of the chasing pack.

Other notable players to safely navigate through to Monday's Day 2 include the man who reached the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event Kelly Kim (92,200), Hüsnü Sincar (247,500), Giuseppe Pantaleo (191,300) and former WPT Amneville champion Sam El Sayed (214,300).

Rejoin us from 1:00PM local time for all the action from this amazing tournament. Until then check out this video with our overnight chip leader and Lynn Gilmartin.

Moorman Eliminated By Hajjar

Chris Moorman has never made it to the money places in a World Poker Tour event and his cashless streak has continued here in Cyprus as he has just been eliminated by Dori Hajjar.

We joined the action on a {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop; and what action it was! Hajjarhad bet 1,775 from early position and Moorman had raised it up to 4,575 from the button. Hajjar was sat pondering his next move, doing so whilst under the watchful gaze of Moorman. After 45 seconds, Hajjar took back his original bet and replaced it with 10 yellow chips worth a total of 10,000.

Moorman sat motionless for a few moments before counting his stack and then raising to 20,075 which left him with around 15,000 or so behind. Hajjar moved all-in and Moorman rechecked his cards and made the call.

Moorman: {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Hajjar: {A-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

The turn propelled Moorman into the lead, the {3-Clubs} completing his flush but any feelings of joy were soon shattered as the river was the {k-Clubs}, improving Hajjar to a better flush, which he celebrated by giving out an overenthusiastic roar and slamming his fist on the table.

Moorman on the other hand just stood and left the table like the pro that he is.

Finger of Fate

Martin Finger
Martin Finger

Martin Finger has rocketed up to the top of the pack after he won a substantial pot on the river in a three way fight against Chris Moorman and Bernard Samaha.

The board was reading {3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and it had been checked to Samaha who'd bet 8,700 on the river into a pot of nearly 20,000. Finger dwelt up and then made the call and it looked for a moment as if Moorman might make the overcall but instead he released his hand.

Samaha sighed unhappily and, slightly frustrated, showed {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for the missed double gutshot and straight flush draw, but perhaps it was a blessing as Finger showed {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} having a lot of Samaha's outs covered.

Finger is up to 105,000, Moorman is on 36,000 while Samaha dropped to 12,500.

Welcome to Day 1b of the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic

WPT Cyprus Trophy
WPT Cyprus Trophy

It's deja vu time as we do it all over again with our second start day. We'll be starting at 1pm once and we're expecting all four Mizrachi brothers, Daniel Cates, former November Niner Kelly Kim and the controversial Chino Rheem to all be in action today.

They'll all be hoping to top Maxim Panyak, the Russian who finished last night as overall chip leader with 255,800. No doubt some of those who didn't make it through last night will be back for a second crack at the whip today. Remember, there is a $1 million dollar guarantee on the prize pool...

We'll be starting at 1pm in just under an hour. In the meantime, check out Lynn Gilmartin's tour of this stunning venue, the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel & Casino, as well as the surrounding areas, Kyrenia and Bellapais. Now you can see exactly what you're missing!
