Nguyen Looking for a Second

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

We've got one day behind us at the WSOP-C Harrah's Chester.

A total of 269 players showed up for this $1,600 Main Event, the penultimate one of the 2010-11 Circuit season. With several other major tournaments running around the world, it's no surprise to see a bit of a thin field here this week, but the notables that were nearby came out in full force. Full Tilt Red Pro "Miami" John Cernuto was here, along with fellow Circuit regulars like Chris Reslock, Chris Tryba, Allen Kessler, Matt Glantz, and Josh Brikis. All six of those men fell by night's end, however.

On the flip side of things, we've got a familiar Circuit face atop the overnight chip counts. In January, Huy Nguyen took down the Main Event at Choctaw Casino in Oklahoma, locking up his seat in the National Championship in May. One Main Event ring may not be enough for Nguyen, though, and he's gunning for number two here this week. He's stuffed his bag with 241,400 chips, good enough to set the pace for the remaining field on Day 2. Also still in the mix are Ari Engel, Zach Gruneberg, Matt Brady, Jake Toole, and Mark "dipthrong" Herm.

The 55 who survived this opening day will be back here at noon tomorrow to pick up the story. We'll be here too, and we hope you'll join us as we play down to a final table.

Until then, all that's left is goodnight!

Dipthrong in the House

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

When we walked up to the table, the drama was already over, but we caught some of the details after the fact. It was a pot between Mark "dipthrong" Herm and a player we don't recognize. They took a {10-Diamonds} {A-Spades} {3-Hearts} flop, and Herm got his last 40,800 chips into the middle with {A-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. He had out-flopped his opponent's {A-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}, and the turn {5-Hearts} and river {Q-Hearts} kept Herm alive.

He's doubled up close to 100,000 thanks to that fine flop.

Siegel Scores a KO

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Eric Siegel has been hanging steady around the 40K mark for what seems to be the last six hours, but just scored an elimination to up his stack to roughly 90,000.

He opened in middle position to 6,800 and the player on the button shoved for about 35,000. Action folded back to Siegel and he called with {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}, leading his opponent's {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

The board ran out {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} to secure the hand for Siegel.

Gruneberg Gaining Ground

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Zach Gruneberg is one of those lifetime highs that's rare amongst curmudgeonly poker players. "HustlerGruney" just came over to our table to tell us the details of a big pot moments ago.

"I just made a big call in a 50k pot with ace-high," he said excitedly. "And the guy showed queen-high."

Gruneberg went on to relay the details of the hand that began with him opening to 5,600 from the cutoff seat. The big blind defended, and they both checked through the {10-} {6-} {4-} flop. When a {5-} hit the turn, the big blind led out with 8,000, and Gruneberg floated to see a {2-} on the river. The big blind instantly led out with 13,000, and Gruneberg felt his {A-} {9-} was good enough for the call.

It was. His opponent showed his inferior {Q-} {8-}, and that nice call moves him up to about 140,000 here in the last level of the day.
