Hankins Avoids Disaster

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante
Robert Hankins

On a {7-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop, former WSOPC Horseshoe Southern Indiana Main Event champ Robert Hankins had 6,500 in front of him from under the gun, and was contemplating calling off his last 22,000 after Garrick Ballard jammed next to act, chasing a third player who had 2,500 invested out in the process.

"You got diamonds?" Hankins asked Ballard. A few moments later, he said, "Fold."

Ballard flipped over {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} for top set, and Hankins nodded, while Ballard scooped in the pot.

Phan's Second Barrel Succeeds

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante

Donnie Phan raised to 1,200 from the hijack, and found a lone caller in the small blind.

The small blind checked the {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop over to Phan, who bet 1,700. The small blind quickly called.

On the {7-Hearts} turn, the small blind pointed over to Phan as a check, and Phan bet 3,500. The small blind folded.

Real Estate Investor Matt Sterling Claims Second Gold Ring

Level 7 : 300/500, 500 ante
Matt Sterling

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is at the Horseshoe Southern Indiana in the Louisville area to live report the $1,700 Main Event; however, that is just one of more than a dozen gold ring events that have taken place over the past week. As such, we thought we’d profile some of the preliminary tournaments and those who struck it big.

Event #5: $600 Pot-Limit Omaha Freezeout had 63 players create a $32,445 prize pool that was paid out to the top 10 players. After Ryan Dersch exited in 10th place for $860, the final table was set.

Eventually, the title came down to Matt Sterling and Charlie Dawson, with the former ultimately coming out on top to the tune of $10,578. It marked his second career gold ring.

“I definitely felt like I had a decent chance to win, only five of us left and I had more than an average stack,” said Sterling, a real estate investor. “I am actually heading to Las Vegas tomorrow to watch a golf tournament, so I won’t be playing in any other events this series.”

Jewell Pressures Apter

Level 7 : 300/500, 500 ante

Kurt Jewell raised to 1,500 from the button, and the small blind called. WSOP Bracelet winner Brett Apter tanked for a bit in the big blind before three-betting to 7,000, and action was back on Jewell.

Jewell spent a few minutes in the tank as well, before four-betting to 14,800. The small blind quickly folded, and Apter, who had 28,400 behind, tanked for a minute before reluctantly letting his hand go.
