Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Aleksandrs Golubevs

Day 1a of the WSOPC UK £1,100 Main Event, held at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham, has now concluded. A total of 187 entries were recorded and, of those, 64 players will return for Day 2.

After 12 levels of play, Aleksandrs Golubevs finished the day at the top of the table with 370,000 chips.

Golubevs is a regular on the UK circuit and has $411,616 in live tournament earnings. His biggest score so far was at the GUKPT Luton in 2019, where he finished second for £33,900. He’s also previously locked up a first place finish at the Dusk Till Dawn 8-max series, worth £23,855.

Closely behind in joint second place are Bhavin Khatri and Jack McDermott, who are both sat on the exact same amount, 342,000 in chips.

Khatri so far has $614,242 in live tournament earnings to his name. Jack McDermott, meanwhile, will be looking to record his first live result since 2011. He’s now in a solid position to make an impactful return to the felt.

Joining them in the top five chip count, both with over 300,000 chips, are Andrew Tuxworth and Fabio Miranda. Other notable players who made it through Day 1a include Jack O’Neill, Julien Sitbon and Ian Hamilton.

Day 1a Recap

The tournament room continued to fill up during the first couple of blind levels. In a game changing hand early on, Khatri found himself all in against two players and hit a set of queens to knock both players out of the game. The pot proved crucial to Khatri gaining his position at the top of the chip counts.

The day saw heated discussions as well as interesting hands. At around the half way point, Roberto Romanello made a mistimed preflop bluff attempt and ran into Hong Pham’s pocket aces. That hand has helped give Pham a solid stack of 226,000 chips and a healthy position to start on Day 2.

Eliminations came in fast and plenty towards the latter end, including a double elimination that contributed to sixth place Antonius Samuel’s stack.

Double Elimination as Both Talib and Coughlan Bust

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Paul Coughlan
Paul Coughlan

Three players were all in preflop and cards were on their backs. Both Jawad Talib and Paul Coughlan were at risk.

Jawad Talib: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Paul Coughlan: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Antonius Samuel: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}

With all three players holding pocket pairs, Samuel was well ahead as the cards were dealt.

The board came {10-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{9-Spades}. The king on the flop further improved Samuel's hand, his set of kings almost impossible to break. The set of nines on the river for Talib was irrelevant, as Samuel had both players covered.

Both Talib and Coughlan were eliminated from the tournament. Samuel, meanwhile, moved up the ranks to become one of the chip leaders.

Romanello had been attempting a steal with his four-bet, but couldn't have timed it any worse as he ran into Pham's aces. He had a long way to go if he was to catch up.

The board ran out {q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{5-Spades}{j-Hearts}{q-Clubs}. Pham's aces held up and Romanello was eliminated from the tournament. Pham, meanwhile, chipped up to over 250,000.

Eminoglu Wins Huge Pot With Two Pair; Heated Discussion Ensues

Level 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Yucel Eminoglu
Yucel Eminoglu

In an action packed and midly controversial hand, five players made it to the flop following a single preflop raise and calls.

The flop came {8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and play checked around to Ori Hasson, who bet 3,600. Fabio Miranda called and Yucel Eminoglu called. All other players folded.

The turn came the {a-Clubs}. Eminoglu led out for 7,000 and Hasson reraised to 23,500. Miranda vacated the pot and Eminoglu made the call.

The river was the {9-Clubs}. Eminoglu checked and Hasson bet out for 35,000, most of his remaining chips. Eminoglu thought for a short while before making the call. He showed {a-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} for two pair. Hasson chucked his hand in the muck. An argument then ensued, with Hasson implying that Eminoglu had made an angle shoot.

"You don't know me. I never angle shoot anybody," said Eminoglu. The two players continued the heated discussion until a warning from the floor shut it down.

In any case, Eminoglu scooped a large pot and Hasson was left with just a few big blinds behind.

Khatri Hits Set of Queens to Eliminate Both Hulme and Hyland

Level 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Bhavin Khatri
Bhavin Khatri

Andrew Hulme open raised and Bhavin Khatri put in the three-bet to 6,000. "You can write about this hand," he said.

Brendan Hyland four-bet to 27,000 and Hulme pushed all in with the shortest stack of the three players. Khatri came over the top with a shove.

Hyland thought about it as Khatri said, "Okay, so he was fucking around". Hyland did make the call though, meaning both he and Hulme were at risk. Players flipped their cards.

Andrew Hulme: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Brendan Hyland: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Bhavin Khatri: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

"I'm running way too good to not hit a queen," said Khatri.

The board ran out {q-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}. Sure enough, Khatri did hit his queen. In doing so, he eliminated both Hulme and Hyland from the event and added even more to his burgeoning chip stack.

Khatri now has over 350,000 in chips, making him one of the tournament chip leaders.

Jake Rowe
Jake Rowe

Vincenzo Lupoli raised and Colin Paddington called. Jake Rowe reraised to 5,500 chips and only Paddington came along.

The flop was {j-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. Rowe continued for 3,000 and Paddington called. The turn was the {j-Spades}. Rowe opted to check and Paddington bet out 10,000, which Rowe called.

The river was the {a-Clubs}. Rowe moved all in for all of Paddington's chips. Paddington shook his head before tossing his hand in the muck.

"Show me a card that isn't an ace," said Ali Ayub, but Rowe did not oblige. He scooped the pot and moved up to over 100,000 in chips.
