Guess What Bill Edler Had?

Bill Edler raises to 1,000, another player reraises to 3,000, and Bill Edler moves all in. His opponent thinks for a bit before folding K-K face up, and Edler takes the pot.

There are some crazy bets on Day 1 of the Main Event, but Bill Edler is not a crazy guy. He won his first WSOP bracelet this year, and he is highly regarded by a lot of top pros. There is likely only one hand that Bill Edler would make this move with.

Where's Hellmuth?

Table 78, Seat 7 is empty. It is Phil Hellmuth's assigned seat. He has not arrived yet and we don't expect him for a while. Hellmuth traditionally shows up to the WSOP main event late. He was invovled in a car crash in the parking lot yesterday when he wreck an Ultimate Bet sponsored race car. He survived without any injuries. Stay tuned for his Hellmuthian arrival.

Not the First Bustout -- But It Could Have Been

At Table 164, we had the potential for the first bustout of the day after only ten minutes.

Three players get to the river on a board showing {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}, and there is 2,000 in the pot. What would be the proper bet at this point?

Well, the player in seat 6 decides that this is a perfect moment to move in. Does he have the nuts? (No, as we'll find out later.) What about the second nuts (3-3) or a very strong hand that he hit on the river (Q-Q)?

Anyway, one of the other players in the hand holds up his cards, and behind the rail we can see he has J-9 for a full house, jacks full of threes. He folds, figuring it isn't worth the risk. The third player folds, and the overbetter takes the pot.

We'll probably never know what the first guy had, but whether it was a bluff or a calculated value bet, it seems a little excessive for ten minutes into the World Series of Poker Main Event.

Across The Generations

You hear all the time about Internet whiz-kids taking down huge tournaments when they're barely old enough to buy a beer. But anyone who thinks that poker is a game where youth is served should speak to Jack "Jeffrey' Ury, who is playing in the Main Event today. Mr. Ury is 94 years old, making him the oldest player in the history of the World Series of Poker.

Now THAT'S a Card Topper

So Senator D'Amato announces "Shuffle Up and Deal"...and a long-haired gentleman wearing a suit stands up and CRASHES two cymbals together. For a moment we thought it was just a little flourish Harrah's put together for the Senator's words...but no! He put the cymbals underneath his chair and sat down at his table. We'll see if this is how he celebrates winning a pot.

A Word from Jack Effel

Nolan Dalla introduced tournament director Jack Effel who welcomed all of the main event players. He briefly went over the rules, with emphasis on the following three...

1. You must be at your seat before the last card is dealt, otherwise you will have a dead hand.

2. You cannot be on a cellphone or text messaging when the first card is dealt. If you are, you're hand is declared dead.

3. You cannot put chips in your pockets or conceal them anyway or take them off the tournament floor, they will be taken out of play.
