Slezak Not Intimidated Easily

Preflop, Bob Slezak made it 250,000 to go and David Tran made the call.

Flop: {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

On the flop, Tran made it 250,000 to go and Slezak called. The turn was the {5-Hearts} and Tran led out for 350,000. Slezak called and both players checked the {8-Clubs} on the river. Slezak showed {A-Spades}{9-Clubs} and Tran mucked.

Featured Table - Jon Kalmar Doubles Through Daniel Alaei

Jon Kalmar
Jon Kalmar
On the Featured Table, Jon Kalmar says "Raise" from middle position, but throws in more than half a raise but less than a full raise -- regardless of his originally intent, he is required to make the minimum raise to 120,000. Daniel Alaei reraises from the button to 540,000, and Kenny Tran thinks things over for a minute in the big blind before he folds.

The action is back to Kalmar, he moves all in for 1.69 million, and Alaei calls with {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}. Kalmar shows {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}, and as the shorter stack, he'll need them to hold up to stay alive. (Tran says that he folded pocket jacks.)

The flop comes {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}{2-Hearts}, and Kalmar flops a set of kings for a dominating lead. Alaei needs something runner-runner to win the hand.

The turn card is the {7-Clubs}, the river card is the {3-Clubs}, and Jon Kalmar wins the pot with his three kings, doubling up to about 3.4 million in chips.

Stefan Mattson: Swedish Idol?

The dashing Stefan Mattson playing on Day 5
The dashing Stefan Mattson playing on Day 5
Stefan Mattson is a professional poker player from Stockholm, Sweden. Amazingly, he is on a short list of players who have made the top 60 in the money in the WSOP Main Event in back to back years. Last year, Stefan finished in 57th place and this year, he is still going strong with 29 players remaining. His sponsor is Team ParBet, and Stefan plays a lot of poker online-- as he lives in a country where online poker is totally legal.

In the audience rooting for Stefan today are two of his friends, Markus and Heinrich, who flew out to Las Vegas to support their friend in the world's largest poker tournament. Stefan is quite handsome, young, and is single (you hear that, ladies?)

And for him today, life is good.

Featured Table - Jason Koshi Eliminated in 30th Place ($285,678)

30th Place - Jason Koshi
30th Place - Jason Koshi
On the Featured Table, Kenny Tran raises from late position to 175,000, Jason Koshi moves all in from the button for 945,000, and Tran quickly but casually calls with {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. Koshi shows {K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and he needs to improve to stay alive.

The flop comes {Q-Spades}{J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, and Tran retains a big lead with his pocket aces. Koshi needs something runner-runner to survive.

The turn card is the {2-Spades}, and Koshi is drawing dead. (The meaningless river card is the {6-Diamonds}.) Kenny Tran wins the pot with a pair of aces.

Jason Koshi is eliminated in 30th place, earning $285,678.
