Scotty Nguyen Color Blind?

Colorful Chips
Colorful Chips
Scotty Nguyen had a problem with putting the wrong color chip out for his big blind. There are three denominations of chips and they're all a variation of orange. The 5,000 chips are orange or tangerine as one staff member called it. The 25,000 chips are peach-colored. The 50,000 are salmon-colored.

Depending on the lighting in the Amazon Ballroom and underneath the lights of the ESPN feature table, both players and dealers are having a difficult time figuring out what chips are in play. As one player said, he had to physically look at the numbers on the chips to determine what he's betting.

Since all the chips are very similar to each other, action has slowed down while players make extra precautions before betting. Dealers are also having a tougher time counting down stacks and bets.

Featured Table - Daniel Alaei Doubles Through Jerry Yang

Daniel Alaei
Daniel Alaei
On the Featured Table, Daniel Alaei has the button in seat 5, he limps for 60,000, Jerry Yang raises from the small blind to 260,000, Alaei moves all in for 1.54 million, and Yang calls with {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. Alaei shows {A-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and he'll need to improve to stay alive. Kenny Tran says that he folded A-10.

The flop comes {Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, and Yang retains the lead with his ten kicker. The turn card is the {8-Clubs}, and Alaei needs to catch a five on the river to stay alive.

The river card is the -- {5-Spades}! The crowd applauds as Daniel Alaei catches a three-outer on the river to survive and double up to over 3.1 million in chips.

Ryan Elson Doubles Up Through Philip Hilm

From early position, Daniel Alaei raised to 165,000 and David Tran, Philip Hilm and Jeff Bryan all chose to call. That's when Elson moved all-in for an additional 1.54 million from the big blind. Alaei, Tran and Bryan surrendered but Hilm made the call with pocket Sixes. Elson turned over pocket Tens and they held up on the {4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} board, more than doubling Elson to 3.4 million.

Off To A Great Start

Lee Childs, chip leader at today's Feature Table, decided to only play in two WSOP events this year. He also played in two last year, but this is his first year in attendance at the Main Event. He was in good form going into the Main Event as he previously won a tournament at Caesar's and a $10,000 buy-in for a tournament in October.

Back home, Lee is the Vice President of Application Development (a computer software company) for a division of National Geographic. He decided to take two months off of work to see what his possibilities were in developing as a poker player.

His father is here from North Carolina to cheer Lee on from the stands. Mike Sexton, who lived in North Carolina and is familiar with Lee, phoned the Childs this morning to wish Lee luck. Lee asked Mike if there was any advice he could pass on, to which Mike responded, "Just keep doing what you've been doing and keep away from the big stacks, unless you've got the nuts."

As our reporter was speaking to Lee's father, Lee won the first hand of the day, eliminating Hoa Nguyen and is now up to nine million in chips. After the hand, Lee rushed immediately to his father, gave him a high-five, and went back to his seat. He's off to a great start today.

That Probably Isn't Gonna Work

Alex Kravchenko From Day 5
Alex Kravchenko From Day 5
After Alex Kravchencko raised to 150,000 Ron Kluber tried some table-talk to get a read on him. "Are you ready to go home?" Kluber asked...and probably didn't pick up much info, as Kravchenko practically defines the phrase "poker face." There are times you'd think Alex's face was chiseled from marble, such is the lack of expression he normally displays. Kluber eventually gave up and tossed his cards in the muck.
