Cruel Game

Perhaps it's because it's Friday 13th, but the deck has been particularly cruel and/or entertaining today, depending on how you look at it.

Some recent showdowns:

Mark Brockington doubled up with {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds} against Steve Pestal's {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts}. Of course he was ahead when they got the chips in, but the board came down as follows: {A-?} {10-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {Q-Spades} {J-Hearts}.

Also Dan Hill holding {9-?} {9-?} was eliminated by Scott Bohlman holding {J-?} {J-Clubs} -- again, ahead when the chips went in, but the board came down a teasing {5-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {6-Spades} {8-Clubs}.

Hamby Makes Early Push

Straight from the off, we have an all-in, Patrick Stemper's preflop raise of 4,200 being followed by an all-in for over 30,000 from Jared Hamby the next seat down.

Stemper, still carrying his backpack on his shoulders as if guarding the crown jewels, glanced at his opponent's chips briefly, before eventually opting for the fold.

New Surroundings

Good morning all. We've brushed off the cobwebs and wiped away the sleep from our eyes to rejoin this $2,000 no limit hold'em freezeout here in the Rio. However, instead of being in the familiar surroundings of the Amazon Room, day two will be taking place in the Brasilia Room. This doesn't mean we hopped on a plane and headed for South America, but simply trundled down the hall a few yards and into a separate room that is being used when the Amazon Room is positively heaving.

Although it's simply a miniature version of the main room, our final eleven tables are the only form of poker currently taking place in here, making it a rather serene atmosphere and a refreshing change from the constant hustle and bustle of the Amazon Room.

Glancing over at the tournament directors, who look braced and raring to go, it would seem as though they are just moments away from saying those immortal words...
