Harman The Believer

Jennifer Harman, during the HORSE World Championship
Jennifer Harman, during the HORSE World Championship
Jennifer Harman opened with a raise from under the gun to 250 and the big blind made the call.

They took a flop of {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}, and the player in the big blind checked to Harman, who fired 500. The BB player made the call.

The turn was the {A-Spades} and both players checked. The river was the {J-Clubs} and the big blind led out for 2,500. Harman thought for a few minutes and said, "I might have the best hand."

Her opponent replied, "No, you don't!"

"OK, I believe you," said Harman as she folded her hand. Her opponent flashed the {10-Spades} as he raked in the pot to leave Harman down to 17,000.

Bell Takes One Down

On a board reading {10-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {A-Clubs}, Duncan Bell check-called an opponent's bet of 1,700. The river was the {8-Spades} and both players checked, with Bell turning over {A-Spades} {5-Spades} and his opponent showing pocket queens.

After the hand, Bell is back up to 21,000.

Kenna Show You a King?

On a flop of {Q-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}, a player moved all in against Stephen Kenna. Kenna made the call. Kenna held {K-Clubs} {K-Hearts} and his opponent held {7-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds}. Kenna's opponent had a lot of potential outs, but none of them came when the {7-Spades} hit the turn and the {J-Spades} hit the river.

After the hand, Kenna moved up to 48,800.

Early Sickness

Scott Lazar raised to 300 from middle position before a player in the cutoff reraised to 800. Gary Germann called from the button, as did Lazar before the flop came {2-?} {4-?} {7-?}.

It was checked to the cutoff player, who bet 2,200. Germann called before Lazar raised it up 5,000. Both opponents called. The turn came {A-?}, prompting Lazar to bet 8,000 and the only player still interested was Germann, who moved all in. Lazar snap-called with {2-?} {2-?} for a flopped set. He was very unlucky, though, as Germann had {A-?} {A-?} for a turned bigger set.

The river came blank, meaning Germann scooped a big pot for this stage. Lazar is down to just 1,050 and looks over at Germann's 44,000 stack, thinking of what might have been.

Big Blind Special

Wendy Weissman raised to 300 from the cutoff and only the player in the big blind called. The flop came {6-Clubs}{7-Spades}{8-Hearts}. The BB bet 900 and Weissman called. The turn was the {4-Diamonds}. The BB checked, Weissman bet 1,000, and her opponent called.

The river was the {9-Hearts}. The BB checked again, and this time Weissman bet 2,000. The BB called and turned over 7-4 for two pair. Weissman showed {A-Spades}{9-Spades} for a pair of nines.

Weissman is down to 16,500.

Jesus Rises

Chris Ferguson
Chris Ferguson
On a flop of {8-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {2-Diamonds}, the small blind checked, Chris Ferguson bet 450, the small blind raised to 840, and Ferguson called. The turn was the {Q-Spades}. The small blind checked, the big blind bet 1,650, and the small blind called. The river was the {2-Clubs} and both players checked.

Ferguson turned up {Q-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} for top pair, besting his opponent's {8-Spades} {9-Hearts}, and raked in the pot. Jesus is back up to 21,000.

Brown Out

Winner of Event No. 16, the $2,000 Omaha Hi/Lo event, Andrew Brown, held {Q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and got all of his chips in the middle after flopping a flush draw, only to find himself up against a player holding K-K.

The needed diamond didn't come, and Brown's Main Event ends early.

Presto Goot!

John Phan shows off his WSOP gold bracelets.
John Phan shows off his WSOP gold bracelets.
John "the Razor" Phan is on Blue #2, right by our media table. He has his WSOP gold braclets on his right wrist and what looks like a cup of pink Vitamin Water (what, no Coronas?) in front of him. On a recent flop of {K-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {5-Clubs}, Phan checked and his opponent checked behind. When the turn fell {9-Clubs}, Phan bet 900 but his opponent wanted nothing to do with it and folded.

"You're supposed to call!" said Phan, opening {5-Hearts} {5-Diamonds}. He is up to 26,000 in chips.

Everyone Helping Out

Today appears to be "all hands on deck" here at the Rio. Today's massive field required not only every single poker area assigned for the WSOP, but also the assistance of anyone that can lend a hand. We just noticed the dealer coordinator out on the floor dealing hands for today's event. She has since been pushed out the box for a regular dealer, but that was just another example of how Harrah's staff goes out of their way to make sure that this event, and all other events for this year's World Series, goes off without a hitch.

Melikian Claws His Way Back

Ara Melikian has had a rough start so far today. Down to just 5,500 chips, Melikian pushed them all in the middle on a {6-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {3-Spades} flop after his opponent bet 1,500. His opponent called with {6-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}; Melikian opened {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} for a flush draw. The turn improved his hand when it fell {J-Diamonds} to give him a straight draw. The flush filled on the river with the {2-Clubs}.

Melikian doubled up to 12,000 on the hand.
