End of the night for Hachem
Joe Hachem had dwindled under 3,000 in chips to become the severe short stack among the remaining players, and exited in 11th place to bring the action to a halt for the night.
In his final hand, Hachem raised all but a single green 25 chip preflop, with Doyle Brunson calling. Hachem caught a piece of the flop with his , and tossed his chip in as a formality. Brunson, though, had caught a piece of the flop as well with his . Brunson's kings held up as the turn and river brought the and .
The remaining players are busy bagging up their chips -- official end-of-night counts to follow.
Robert Varkonyi
Robert Varkonyi went into the tank after Dan Harrington fired a pot-sized bet of 3,000, with the complete board reading . Several minutes elapsed before Varkonyi gave it up, and Harrington generously showed him for the rivered boat. Varkonyi slipped to under 15,000 on the hand but was pleased to save the extra 3,000.
Meanwhile, Harrington continues his evening surge, approaching 21,000 in chips.
Johnny Chan
Another "All in and a call" from the secondary feature table, and this time Johnny Chan was at risk. His on a board of had lots of outs but trailed Jim Bechtel's , and the rockets held when the river brought the .
Chan's departure continues a flurry of recent eliminations and brings us nearer to the end of Day 1 play. Another elimination or two will mark the end of the session, as Level 6 moves on.
Today's 13th-place finisher
Carlos Mortensen remains on fire, and his latest victim was Chris Ferguson. Mortensen opened for a raise and Ferguson jammed his last 9,000 with , only to have Mortensen snap-call and show .
The board offered no real hope for Ferguson, running out . The 2000 champ exited here in 13th spot.
This time the need for table balancing was real, and Huck Seed moved over to fill Ferguson's vacated seat.
Meanwhile, Mortensen stacked up nearly 46,000 in chips.
No more "Baby" talk tonight
Following Brad Daugherty's departure, tournament director Bill Bruce called a temporary halt to play on the secondary feature, hustling over to Table 146 to get a player and balance the tables at seven each.
Except... there was no need. Upon arriving, Bruce found Scotty Nguyen all in with pocket tens against Tom McEvoy's pocket jacks. Neither player improved, and Nguyen exited in 14th as McEvoy surged to challenge Carlos Mortensen for the lead.
The secondary feature table was able to plow ahead with its six remaining players, and the seven at Table 146 also continued on.
Brad Daugherty departs
Brad Daugherty and Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, two of the shorter stacks remaining in the Champions Invitational, got the chips all in on the secondary feature table. Jesus had to Daugherty's and had Daugherty covered.
The board ran out and Ferguson gathered some much needed chips at Daugherty's expense. The '91 champ exited in 15th place.
Scotty Nguyen climbed back above his starting stack after taking a healthy pot from Huck Seed. Most of the chips went in early on this hand, but Huck slowed down on the turn when the board read . Nguyen checked behind, then bet 2,000 when the river brought the .
Seed quickly folded. Nguyen showed a queen, and twisted the knife a bit, saying, "You let me get there, baby."
