Big Stack Watch

Who's leading the field? By our reckoning our breakaway leaders right now are:

Jason Mercier: 50,000
Franklyn Caldwell: 50,000
Ryan Fair: 49,000
Bill Davis: 44,000

All's Fair in Love and Card(oza)s

Ryan Fair, one of our big stacks, has dropped just a little. The player to his right raised, and Fair reraised heftily -- only for Avery Cardoza in the big blind to move all in. The original raiser quickly got out of the way, and Fair called, only to find that his {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} had smacked right into Cardoza's {A-Diamonds} {A-Hearts}. No change on the board, and Cardoza doubled up. Fair is still on a commanding 46,000 or so, though.

Nice Hand, Meehan

A full and fortunate double up for Jim Meehan -- he held deuces, his opponent held queens, and all the chips went in on a {10-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} {8-Clubs} flop. No miraculous re-binking for the gent with queens, and Meehan is now the proud possessor of 17,000 in chips.

Thanh Chau Is Chip Leader; Very Happy

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Thanh Chau. He has 94,000 in chips right now.

"What's that for?" he asked suspiciously as I asked him his name. "It's because you're chip leader," said I. "Oh," he said. Then, happy as Larry, "Am I really chip leader?" Yes he is. That's why we do this job. It's for those little bits of happiness we can spread across a card room.

Massive Hand Alert

Biggest pot of the tournament so far, caught up with on the river of the {9-Spades} {5-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} board. With a number of chips already in the pot that can only be described as a lot, Tommy Pope announced all in, and after some rather tense dwelling time, Faraz Jaka announced call.

Jaka: {A-?} {A-?}
Pope: {J-Spades} {J-Hearts}

Yikes.

With that rather cruel river, Pope doubled up to a chip lead contesting 92,000, while Jaka's healthy stack was decimated. Don't feel too sorry for Jaka, though -- he managed to make a straight flush the very next hand to knock out a player, and is on a very respectable 28,000.
