Event 28 - $1,500 No Limit Hold'em

Day 1 Completed

Day One Concludes for Event 28!

Chip Leader Mats Gavatin
Chip Leader Mats Gavatin
We have reached the end of another successful day at the Rio with the chips being bagged for Event 28 - $1,500 No Limit Holdem.

Today saw 2,641 poker enthusiasts take to the felt to battle it out, however at the end of the day only few would make it through.

JC Tran, Dennis Phillips, Ylon Schwartz, Hevad Khan, Amarillo Slim and Jason Mercier were just a handful of names that came and went. However, at the end of the day it would be Mats Gavatin leading the charge with 131,800 in chips with Marco Johnson (126,200) and Magne Boe (117,300) hot on his heels.

Thor Hansen (39,000), Liv Boeree (24,200) and
Ivan Demidov (23,300) are still here representing the overseas contingent, while Kelly Kim (55,500) and David Chicotsky (30,100) are holding down the home front.

With all the action from day two kicking off at 2pm local time tomorrow, make sure to join the PokerNews live reporting team for every blow up, bust out and bad beat of the day.

Play Tightening Up

With just over 30-minutes remaining in the day, players are starting to tighten up as they realise a dream of making day two of a tournament.

Also, with 360 players still in the field, we are only 90 spots from that elusive WSOP cash!

Johnson Cracks Aces

Marco Johnson bumped the action to 2,600 from early position, and found a caller in the small blind.

The flop fell {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and a check from his opponent followed. Johnson bet out 3,100, but his opponent quickly made it 10,000 to go.

Johnson then slid a stack of yellow 1,000-denomination chips into the pot to effectively put his opponent all in; his opponent obliged and the cards were tabled.

Johnson: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}

The turn of the {K-Spades} was dropped from heaven for Johnson, putting him in the lead with two-pair.

When the river landed the {6-Clubs}, Johnson sent his opponent packing and he soared up to 132,000 in chips.

Johnson the First to 100k

Marco Johnson is the first player to hit the 100,000-chip mark.

Recently, Johnson lead out for 3,500 on a board reading {k-Spades}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and was called by an opponent. The turn landed the {10-Hearts} and Johnson fired 10,000, which was also called.

Johnson tabled {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} to best his opponent's {K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}. He raked in the pot and now has 106,000 in chips.

Ravi Raghavan is the next player to hit the rail when his {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} was unable to improve against his opponent's {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}.

Brenes Busts

Humberto Brenes
Humberto Brenes
With a limp under the gun, Humberto Brenes shipped the last of his 5,500 in from the big blind.

The under-the-gun limper double-fist-pump-snap called and tabled his {A-?}{A-?} to be ahead of Brenes' {A-?}{Q-?}.

The board fell {K-?}{Q-?}{4-?}{5-?}{8-?} to see Brenes exit to the rail.
