Day 2 in the Books

Day 2 of the $10,000 Heads-Up World Championship kicked off some 12 hours ago with 64 players dueling it out in a series of matches. Three rounds later, the bracket has been whittled down to just 8.

There were a whole host of notable names who didn't get out of the third round this afternoon. Antonio Esfandiari, Erik Seidel, Dario Minieri, Matt Hawrilenko, Jeff Madsen, David Pham, William Thorson, Vanessa Rousso, Tom Dwan, Scott Fischman, and Chris Ferguson would all be shown the door before the day was even three hours old.

With all of the remaining 32 players in the money, the second round kicked off at a furious pace. Over the course of about two hours, we lost another big contingent of familiar faces. Jonathan Jaffe, Steve Zolotow, Albert Iversen, Brian Lemke, and Brock Parker all bid farewell after stopping by the payout desk.

The last round of play would take us all the way down to our final eight runners. Jason Mercier could not overcome Nathan Doudney when his pocket jacks ran head-first into pocket queens. Mike Caro picked up his first tournament cash since 2006, but he was unable to continue the run, eventually falling to Dustin "Neverwin" Woolf. Nobody in the room wanted to play Justin "Boosted J" Smith, but Johnny Chan was up to the task, clearing out Smith in a fairly short battle. Alec Torelli and Yevgeniy Timoshenko would fall by the wayside as well, and Steve O'Dwyer topped Roberto Romanello to close out the night.

Tomorrow will see the final eight return to play for the bracelet. The first two rounds will see longer, slower blind levels, culminating in a best-of-three heads-up final. Here's the way the remaining players will line up:

Steve O'Dwyer Defeats Roberto Romanello

Steve O'Dwyer limp into the pot from the button and Roberto Romanello raised to 100,000. O'Dwyer moved all in and Romanello called for his last 160,000.
