"They Value Bet Bottom Pair?"

Phil Hellmuth was clearly irritated after calling an opponent's bet on the river with a board that read {6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}. His opponent had flipped over {A-Clubs}{4-Spades} for two pair.

"They value bet bottom pair? I guess you were bluffing. Was it a bluff?" Hellmuth ranted. "That is truly one of the worst plays I've seen in the last three days." Hellmuth mucked his cards and is down to 1,850.

The Dragon Strikes Again

With about 2,000 in the pot and a board reading {8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{A-Spades}{8-Spades}, Seat 9 bet 1,200 and was called by David "The Dragon" Pham. The river card was the {6-Spades} and Seat 9 opted to check.

Pham took his time before betting 1,950. Seat 9 reluctantly folded and Pham showed {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. The entire table seemed to be impressed. Pham is now up to 7,500.

Someone's Getting Paid

Tournament officials have brought us the payout sheet now that entry has closed for the day. Out of the 3,042 players who ponied up $1,000, one of them will walk away with $472,479. Not bad for a week's work. 324 players will pick up a paycheck altogether.

Hellmuth Chatting It Up

Phil Hellmuth has been chatting it up with both his tablemates and the railbirds. One of the railbirds made a comment that Hellmuth must be happy because he is smiling.

"Smile, smile, smile," Hellmuth said, "then I whine for about five minutes, that is what they always show, then I'm smiling again."

Hellmuth has something to smile about since he is sitting with 4,500.

That'll be One Triple Up for Nguyen, Please

Tracey Nguyen re-popped an under the gun raise and pushed her remaining 1,775 into the middle. A late-position player flat-called, and the original raiser made it 3,000 more to go. When the late-position player folded, it was time for a heads up flop.

Nguyen: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Under the Gun: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}

It was a classic race situation, and Nguyen pulled ahead on a {k-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop. She stayed ahead through the {a-Spades} on the turn and the {10-Spades} on the river.

Nguyen is now sitting with 5,500 in chips.

Mandy Baker Sent Packing

Mandy Baker kicked things into high gear with an under the gun raise to 350, getting called by the small and big blinds.

The flop came {q-Spades}{6-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and action was checked to Baker, who committed 650 to the pot. The small blind folded, but James Mordue called from the big blind.

The turn delivered the {10-Hearts}, prompting Mordue to check. Baker bet 1,425, and Mordue responded by re-raising all in with Baker making the call.

Baker: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Mordue: {j-Spades}{8-Spades}

Baker wasn't able to pull back ahead, and when the {k-Spades} came on the turn, her tournament life was ended.

Mordue now has about 14,500 chips.

Johnston is Pure Aggression

When you think pure aggression, you might think of 1986 Main Event champ, Berry Johnston. In a recent hand, action folded to Johnston in the cut off and he put in a raise to 375, which was called by the big blind.

The flop came {2-Spades}{K-Clubs}{8-Spades} and the big blind checked. Johnston, with the force of a hurricane, threw in a bet of 400. The pressure appeared to be too much for the big blind, who mucked. Johnston is up to 4,800.

Hunter Lives up to Name

Hunter "The_Hunt_D" Frey took advantage of some preflop action to get a big boost in chips. A player moved all in for 350, with the cutoff player bumping it up to 1,000. Frey three-bet for his remaining 2,275 and was able to get the cutoff out of the picture.

Frey: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Frey had some outs to fade, and he managed to do so when the board ran out {5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. He's now up to 3,700 in chips.
