Ivey Bets Penning Off Better Board

Razz

Phil Ivey: {X}{X}/{5-}{7-}{4-}{3-}
Donald Penning: {X}{X}/{A-}{4-}{6-}{5-}

Penning completed on third street and Ivey raised, getting a call from Penning. It was a similar story on fourth street when Penning bet. Ivey raised it and Penning called. On fifth street, Penning checked and Ivey bet. Looking a little uncomfortable, Penning called. Once again both boards improved on sixth street, with Penning checking and Ivey betting. After about ten seconds, Penning gave it up and Ivey collected the chips.

Ivey: Up to 5,300
Penning: Down to 1,400

Vanessa Rousso: {X}{X}/{5-}{7-}{5-}{J-}/{X}
Gary Benson: {X}{X}/{2-}{4-}{K-}{9-}/{X}
Opponent: {X}{X}/{4-}{J-}

Catching up with the action on fourth street, Gary Benson bet in a three-way hand and was called by just Vanessa Rousso. Benson's board was best throughout and he bet every street until seventh, opting to check. Rousso checked behind and Benson tabled {3-}{8-}{K-} for a 9-8-4-3-2. Rousso could not beat it, showing {2-}{6-}{6-}.

Benson: Up to 3,700
Rousso: Down to 3,600

Lots of Spades for Rios

Hold'em

Jesse Rios was in position for a three-handed flop of {k-Spades} {10-Spades} {9-Spades}. His opponents were both of the blinds. They checked to Rios, who fired out a bet. Only the small blind called to see that {j-Spades} hit the turn. That player checked and called another bet from Rios.

The river {2-Hearts} looked like a total blank. Again the small blind checked and called a bet from Rios. Rios turned over the nut flush, {a-Spades} {9-Clubs}. His opponent did not have the {q-Spades}, allowing Rios to win the pot. He has roughly 6,100 chips.

Clements Grimaces at a Bad Turn Card

Scott Clements
Scott Clements

Omaha 8/b

Scott Clements is probably scratching his head in bewilderment after running into an absolute buzz-saw of a turn card. He was in the small blind for a pot that was raised by a late position player and called by the button, Clements and the big blind. The pre-flop raiser continued after a flop of {7-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {k-Hearts}, with each other player calling in turn.

Clements and the big blind checked again when the turn came {a-Diamonds}. The pre-flop raiser bet again and was called by the button again. Clements took that as his cue to check-raise, folding the big blind. The pre-flop raiser and the button both called.

All three players checked the {9-Diamonds} river. Clements showed down a set of kings, no low, {k-Diamonds} {k-Spades} {9-Clubs} {4-Clubs}. The pre-flop raiser showed aces and kings and a weak low, {a-Spades} {k-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {8-Spades}. The button player showed a set of aces, {a-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {a-Clubs} {q-Hearts}. The case ace on the turn improved everyone but Clements, giving him a second-best hand for both halves of the pot.

Bloch's Stack Shrinking

Omaha 8/b

Andy Bloch raised in early position and was called by an opponent in the small blind. The flop came down {Q-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{A-Hearts} and the player in the small blind bet. Bloch called and the {2-Diamonds} hit the turn. It was checked to Bloch this time and he bet, getting quickly called. Both checked the {Q-Clubs} river and Bloch's opponent tabled {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Bloch couldn't beat it and he is down to 1,275.

Bax Best in Blind Battle

Hold'em

Cliff Josephy was the small blind for a blind-on-blind hand of hold'em, and wound up with the whole pot at showdown. He bet a {3-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} flop, the {8-Diamonds} turn, and the {4-Diamonds} river. Each time his lone opponent, the big blind, called the bet. At showdown Josephy showed that he had rivered a diamond flush, {q-Diamonds} {10-Spades}. The big blind flashed a turned flush, {6-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}, and then mucked.

Josephy curently has roughly 6,200 chips.

Short-Stacked Dwan Doubles

Omaha 8/b

The player in the cutoff raised and Tom "durrrr" Dwan three-bet from the button. The blinds folded and Dwan's opponent called, leading to a {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop. Dwan's opponent led out on both the flop and after the {2-Spades} turn card, with Dwan calling both bets.

The {K-Diamonds} landed on the river and Dwan was again faced with a bet from his opponent. This time Dwan raised for the rest of his stack, 150 more. His opponent called, but mucked when Dwan tabled {K-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs} for kings and eights.

Dwan is still short though, with about 1,700

Madsen Flushes into Quads

Jeff Madsen
Jeff Madsen

Omaha 8/b

Jeff Madsen was flying high through the first two levels of this tournament but he had a small snag a few hands ago. Madsen was one of two in-position players who called bets from the big blind on the flop, turn and river. At showdown, with the board showing {10-Spades} {q-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {4-Hearts}, Madsen started to say "I have a flush," as the big blind was opening quads -- {4-Spades} {4-Clubs} {5-Spades} {10-Hearts}. Madsen quickly mucked his hand, as did the third player in the pot.

Madsen still have 7,000 in chips.
