Day 1 Ends
The chip bags are out after an action-packed day of H.O.R.S.E.-play. 828 players entered this tournament, making it one of the largest H.O.R.S.E. fields ever assembled. They flopped sets in hold'em and omaha hi/lo; they caught the bring-in in razz, stud and stud hi/lo. Only 10% of the field was eliminated by the dinner break after Level 4, but by the end of the night the big board showed 272 survivors of the 828 starters. We imagine the final number is a little lower.
For a $1,500 event, this was an incredibly pro-heavy field. Pick a name out of a hat and that person was probably in our field. As to be expected, many busted. Former Main Event champions Joe Hachem and Greg Raymer started the day next to each other at Orange 316. They ended the day next to each other on the rail. Chris Ferguson, Daniel Negreanu, Jeff Madsen and Lacey Jones didn't fare any better.
But for all those bust-outs, there were several over-sized stacks at the end of the night. They were led by Ming Reslock, who bagged 50,000 chips. Joining her at the top of the counts were Jessie Rios, Maria Ho, 2009 champion James Van Alstyne, Allen Kessler and the internet's golden boy, Tom Dwan.

Short-Stacked Singer Survives

David Singer was all in for his last 1,300 preflop against Mike Wattel and another opponent. The flop came down 
and Wattel bet the other opponent out of the hand.

Singer turned a straight on fourth street to clinch the hand, but he is still on the short side with 4,100. Wattel is a bit stronger with 21,000.
Shulman on Broadway

The pot was raised pre-flop by the button and called by Jeff Shulman from the blinds. Shulman checked a flop of 
and then quickly called a single bet. When the 
hit the turn, he led out. The button player called to the river 
. Shulman fired out a last bet that the button player called. Shulman turned up the nuts, 
, but no low. The button player didn't have a low either and mucked.
Shulman is up to 32,000.
A Hand for Baxter

Bracelet winner Max Stern got things started with by limping from late position. (A floor had been called to the table -- it seems Stern may have intended to raise but was forced to call.) Katie Baxter then raised the small blind and was called by the big blind and by Stern.
Baxter continued on a flop of 
and was called by only the big blind. Both players checked the turn. Baxter also checked the river, then called a bet and tabled pocket jacks. They were good.
Baxter is up to about 15,00. Stern has about 13,000.
Raymer Bust

We arrived at Greg Raymer's table and found him committing his last 1,200 on a board that read 
against two opponents. The river was the 
and the unknown opponent bet. Esther Rossi gave up her hand and the mystery opponent turned over 
for a full house.

Situation Critical for Waggoner

Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy, Marsha Waggoner and Jon Aguiar have all landed on the same table here in the late stages of Day 1. Josephy opened a recent pot with a raise from under the gun. Waggoner called from middle position; Aguiar got in there from the big blind.
Each player put in one bet on a flop of
