Notables in the Crowd

Some familiar faces are emerging in the Pavilion and Amazon Room this afternoon. So far we've spotted Dennis Phillips, Dan Shak, Tom McEvoy, TJ Cloutier, Nancy Todd Tyner, Barry Shulman, Alan Boston and Doug Carli at the tables.

Johnny Hale Bluffs Off Half His Chips

Johnny Hale got involved in a four-way limped pot over at his table. On a flop of {j-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} he bet out 225 chips and got called by one other player. Before the turn came Hale said, "Oh, you're on a diamond draw? I'm going to make you pay for it."

When the {q-Hearts} came on the river, Hale's opponent checked and Hale led out for 525, this time saying "I don't want to hurt ya." His opponent said, "I appreciate it" before making the call.

The river was the {k-Spades} and Hale's opponent once again check-called, this time for 600. Hale immediately mucked and his opponent showed {6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}.

Hale is now down to just 1,250 chips.

Directions From Oklahoma Johnny Hale

Jack Effel welcomed "Oklahoma" Johnny Hale to the stage to kick things off today. Saying "I'm glad to be here today. At my age, I'm happy to be anywhere," Hale welcomed the players to the Amazon Room and accepted the Golden Eagle trophy on behalf of all past champions. Hale has asked all post-2001 champions to join him at break to have their photo taken with the new trophy.

After leading the group through the Pledge of Allegiance, wished everyone luck in getting second place and gave the famous instructions to "Shuffle up and deal."

Welcome to Event #34: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship

That's right, we're at Event 34 already. Today marks Day 1 of the Seniors Championship. Players have begun to file into the Amazon Room and take their seats in preparation of an attempt to reach a final table and win a bracelet.

The winner of this event last year was Michael Davis, who banked a $437,358 payday for his efforts. It doesn't matter how old you are, that's a heck of a cheque to take to the bank.

Stay with us today as we play through the first 10 levels of the event on our way to crowning a new champion.
