Just What We Need...

The Rio is a busy place today. With a number of tournaments on the go, including the $10K PLO, $25K six-max and this doozy right here, there are players all over the place.

A short-stacked Erick Lindgren jokingly suggested to tournament officials that "you need another tournament going." Perhaps, sensing his fate, he suggested "an 11:00 PM turbo for a bracelet."

Maybe next year.

Straight Rolled Out On Peters

"Oh ok! Really? Fives? Well played [sigh]"
"Oh ok! Really? Fives? Well played [sigh]"

Facing a limp, Donnie Peters bumped it to 700 with only the limper making the call as the {A-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop fell.

Peters' 875-chip bet was check-called by his opponent as the turn landed the {J-Spades}. Faced with a check once again, Peters continued his aggression by making it 1,750 to go as his opponent called.

The dealer dropped the {3-Diamonds} on the river and both players checked to see Peters' opponent table his {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} for a rivered wheel as Peters mucked and slipped to 4,275 in chips.

Gray Doubles Through Kelly

Craig Gray had made it 550 to go from the button when Charles Kelly raised to 2,000. Gray three-bet 8,500 more, putting himself all in with Kelly making the call.

Kelly: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Gray: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

Kelly was in a bad way and needed a lot of help if he were to best Gray's aces. He was unable to do so with the board running out {5-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}.

The hand saw Gray double to about 22,000, while Kelly is down to 6,400.

Baekke Toasted

Allan Baekke, who came amazingly close to winning back-to-back EPTs last season, will not be picking up a WSOP bracelet to go with his trophies - he has been eliminated from the running in this last-chance event and will have to rely on a good run in the Main Event if he wants some shiny gold wristwear this year.

Tweaked

The number on the board has dropped back to 1,942. We suspect someone didn't set their alarm clock or something similar.

Moneymaker Creeping Back

The board was complete when we arrived at the scene, reading {3-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Jason Young had bet 2,075 into the pot, which already had 2,000 in it. Chris Moneymaker made the call and Young said, "Nice call."

Moneymaker replied, saying, "I was behind on the turn," but before he could show his cards, Young mucked.

Moneymaker showed {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for good measure and Young said, "Nice hand, sir."

Moneymaker said, "Thank you, I play well," before adding "That's the thing about poker, sometimes I look good, sometimes I look like a complete buffoon". Moneymaker now has 10,150 chips.

Brunson Busts

Todd Brunson bites the dust
Todd Brunson bites the dust

Facing a raise of 500, Todd Brunson three-bet to 1,700 only to be put all in by an opponent's four-bet.

The original raiser laid his hand down, but Brunson made the call for his tournament life holding {A-}{Q-} to be in a race against {10-}{10-}.

Unfortunately for Brunson, the board blanked out and he hit the rail.

Change for Traniello

It looked as though the gentleman in the small blind had checked the {3-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{q-Spades} flop and Marco Traniello had bet 1,000. His opponent called, and they saw a turn.

Bith players checked the {a-Spades} turn and they saw another {a-Clubs} on the river. This time the small blind bet out 2,800 and Traniello tanked up for an amazingly long time before calling with {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. His opponent could only boast {q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and Traniello upped his stack to 9,000.

That's Gotta Hurt

We walked by a table and happened to see two players getting it all in prefop. We almost kept going when we saw that one player had {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} and the other player had {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}. However, when the flop came {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts} we decided to see if we might catch a cooler. The {10-Hearts} came on the river, and the cooler was completed with the {3-Hearts} on the river. Hands like that are never easy to lose.
