Lights, Camera... Where's the Action?

Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

An interesting hand just took place right here before the break -- or, more accurately, during the first part of the dinner break.

Most of the tables had emptied, but action continued on the feature table here in the Red section between Chris Moneymaker and Bryan Pellegrino. They'd reached the river, with the board showing {4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}. With about 20,000 already in the middle, Chris Moneymaker had bet 8,100, and a small group of media -- including the ESPN cameras -- began to surround the table anticipating Pellegrino's response.

More than ten minutes passed, with Pellegrino sitting perfectly still. Finally Moneymaker stood up and said he was going to have to call the clock.

"I said I'm all in!" said Pellegrino, somewhat incredulously. Apparently he'd made the declaration immediately, but Moneymaker -- nor any of those watching the action -- had heard. "I was going to call the clock on you," said Pellegrino, "but I didn't want to."

Moneymaker, now realizing the action was in fact on him, quickly said "Okay, if you got lucky you got lucky," and set his remaining stack before him. He tabled his {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}, and Pellegrino instantly mucked.

Moneymaker will have 121,000 when he returns from the break, while Pellegrino has 72,000.

A Few More For Hastings

With the board showing {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, the player sitting under the gun checked, and Brian Hastings, sitting to his left, bet 7,000. The river brought the {4-Hearts} and another check. Hastings bet 15,000 this time, and again his opponent called.

Hastings showed {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and his opponent mucked. Hastings is up to 92,000 now.

Liporace Whipped

On a flop of {8-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, an early position player bet 2,600 and Andrew Liporace called from the cutoff. The button then raised to 7,600 and both players made the call.

When the {K-Hearts} hit the turn, it went check, check and the button bet 13,000. The player in early position folded and Liporace shoved all in for 58,000. The button snap-called and turned over {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a full house, which left Liporace drawing dead with {7-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

Liporace who started the day as one of the chip leaders, is down to 67,000.

Saltiel Survives with a One-Outer

With the board reading {A-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}{J-Clubs} on the turn, the action was checked to Rob Saltiel on the button who bet. His opponent raised all-in and Saltiel made the call.

Saltiel had flopped a set with {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, but his opponent turned a higher set with {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}. There was only one card in the deck that could save Saltiel, the case eight to make him quads.

Boom. The {8-Diamonds} hit the river as the table, the rail, and every reporter watching the table gasped. Saltiel doubled to 50,000 amidst all the cries of "so SICK!"

What the Seidel Did He Have?

Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Erik Seidel opened the pot from the cutoff seat, and Greg Fishberg called from the small blind.

The two men took a heads-up flop of {K-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {9-Clubs}, and Fishberg check-called 3,000. He checked again on the {10-Spades} turn, and Seidel kept the heat on with another bet -- 9,500 this time. Fishberg didn't bat an eye, though, and he flicked two orange chips into the pot after just a quick pause to consider.

The river was the {Q-Clubs}, and Seidel fired a third bullet of 20,000. Fishberg snap-called, and that hand-in-the-cookie-jar look came over Seidel's face. He waited for Fishberg to show his {10-Hearts} {J-Hearts} and the dealer to announce, "Straight," before quietly mucking.

Seidel is left with just about 17,000 after barreling off a significant chunk of his stack. Fishberg is the beneficiary, up now to 88,000 or so.

Seiver Can't Muster the Call

Scott Seiver
Scott Seiver

We just noticed Scott Seiver's hair had been moved to our section, so we dropped by to check on it. The face confirmed that it was indeed the rest of Scott Seiver under the hair, and he was involved in a pot as we approached.

The board read {7-Hearts} {4-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {K-Spades} and there was about 16,000 piled in the pot. The player in the small blind had a bet of 10,600 strung out in front of him, and Seiver was tanking with that tortured look he pulls off so beautifully. He shuffled chips and cut down his stack. After some time, he leaned back in his chair ever so slightly, and it looked like he might have peeked down under the table, then back up at his opponent. After another couple moments of facial contortions, he surrendered, leaving himself about 67,000.
