Mercier Me

J to the Son to the Mer-Ci-Er
J to the Son to the Mer-Ci-Er

We're not sure how it came to this, but we arrived to see Jason Mercier involved in a massive pot. His opponent was all in preflop and the cards were being turned over.

Mercier: {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}
All-in gentleman: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}

Board: {7-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

With a little silent double fist pump, the all-in player doubled to well over 400,000. Mercier counted out the call, and was left with 90,000 - around a third of the average stack as the bubble looms.

Cantu Folds for a Big Loss

Brandon Cantu may have recently won a small pot, but not too long afterwards, he lost a big one.

We got to the scene to see a board reading {7-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. Cantu was first to act in the heads-up pot and bet 52,000, with there being about 70,000 in the middle already. Cantu's opponent tanked before eventually moving all in for well over 200,000. Cantu was quick to fold and is now down to about 260,000.

Checkers for GBecks

Garrett "GBecks" Beckman checked to an opponent with the board reading {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. His opponent fired 23,500 and Beckman called.

The river brought a fourth heart, the {2-Hearts}, and again Beckman checked. His opponent bet 28,500 and Beckman immediately called.

His opponent shrugged, opening {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for just ace-high and Beckman showed {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for a winning flush. Beckman was good the whole way, and with the pot he's up to 510,000.

A Flesh Wound For Gomilaromero

Bartolome Gomilaromero's giant-killing run has hit a small roadblock after he just doubled up a short-stacked player.

Gomilaromero led out for 20,000 on the {3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{J-Clubs} flop before his opponent moved all in for a total of 67,500. Gomilaromero quickly called with {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} but he'd been out-flopped by his opponent's {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}.

The {K-Clubs} turn and {J-Diamonds} river were both paint but there was no queen amongst it as the shorty doubles up. It's only a scratch on the surface for Gomilaromero who still holds 1.08 million chips to be with the chip leaders.

Coimbra Takes a Hit

André Coimbra
André Coimbra

Shannon Shorr opened the pot with a 10,500-chip raise and next to speak, Team PokerStars Online, André Coimbra, called. The action folded to the player in the small blind and he popped it to 40,000. Shorr tank-folded and Coimbra moved all in. The player in the small blind called for less.

Showdown
Coimbra: {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Opponent: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}

The board ran out {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Clubs} and Coimbra slipped to 540,000 chips.

Cue the "Ooba Ooba" Song

Jesper Hougaard should be a familiar name to poker fans as he not only won two bracelets at the 2008 WSOP (one in Las Vegas and one in London), but he got a good amount of face time on ESPN's 2009 "November Nine" broadcast, leading a rowdy group of his fellow Danes in a chorus of the nonsensical "Ooba Ooba" song each time their countryman Peter Eastgate took down a pot.

In a pot worthy of his own serenade, the action was folded around to the button, who opened for 10,000. The small blind flat-called and Hougaard three-bet to 36,000. The button folded and the small blind called. The small blind checked the {Q-Hearts}{7-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop over to Hougaard, who bet 30,000. The small blind called and they went to the turn, which fell the {10-Spades}. Both players checked. The river was the {9-Clubs} and the small blind check-called Hougaard's 62,000 bet.

Hougaard turned over {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} for two pair queens and sevens and took down the pot. He's up to a very healthy 680,000.

He Is an Actor, After All

Three players, including Jean-Robert Bellande and Vince Van Patten, saw a flop come {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, and all three checked. The turn was the {Q-Spades}. The first player bet out, Bellande folded, and Van Patten made the call.

The river brought the {4-Clubs} and a check from the first to act. Van Patten promptly fired a bet of 50,000 -- around the size of the pot -- and his opponent folded. Van Patten showed his hand as the chips were pushed his way: {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}.

"Vince!" said Bellande at the sight of Van Patten's cards. "I made a couple of what I thought were nice laydowns to you before... now I'm not so sure," he grinned.

Van Patten moves up to 255,000.

Flushed Away

Filippo Candio
Filippo Candio

If ever there were a time I'd release a few expletives, it would be a bad beat on Day 4. On this occasion, however, the unfortunate victim bit his lip, wished his opponents "good luck" and exited stage left with the poise of a gentleman.

The man who dealt the crushing blow was early pace-setter Filippo Candio. He'd raised it up to 11,000, and after being three-bet to 34,000, slid in a stack of Oranges before the action had barely reached in. His opponent, who had around 115,000, immediately called.

On their backs, and, not for the first time today, Candio would be playing catch up with {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} versus {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. The {5-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop looked safe, but I could see the all-in man's face grimace as the turn came the {8-Spades}. Once the {10-Spades} river arrived, it was like someone had put a lemon between his teeth.

"Sorry," came the instant reply, and as the wounded left, Candio added yet more chips to what remains a near uncountable stack. A rough guestimate? I'd say 875,000.

Patience Is Rewarded For Glazier

Jackie Glazier had been battling with a short stack for most of the day as she patiently waited for a spot to commit her chips into the middle. She found it when she moved all in for her last 84,000 in a preflop clash against an opponent who tabled {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}. However Glazier was in good shape as she opened {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}.

The board was spread {K-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} to give Glazier the double up to 175,000.
