Steve Landfish
Steve Landfish

Play has just ended for Day 2 of the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship which started with 87 players and although the plan was to play down to a final table, that was not reached as 14 players remain. The chip leader is Steve Landfish with 780,000.

Landfish built his lead in a hand where he was chip leader against the second biggest stack at the time, Alexander Kostritsyn. Unfortunately we missed the hand but heard Landfish say "I got there" as he showed three hearts from his hole to go with the two on his board which gave him a flush.

Other big stacks include John Hennigan, Chad Brown, Sorel Mizzi and the afformentioned Kostritsyn. Also in the field is the defending champ Men Nguyen as well as Team PokerStars Pros Jason Mercier, Bertrand Grospellier and Ville Wahlbeck.

We only lost two players who made the money, Matt Hawrilenko and Matt Glantz, with Tom McCormick as the bubble boy. Others who busted but came close to cashing included Barry Greenstein, Hasan Habib, Chris Amaral and Steve Zolotow.

Players will return for play tomorrow where the players will hopefully play down to a winner starting at 3:00 p.m. in the Amazon Room again. Join us then at PokerNews for the coverage of this event as well as all of the others.

Brown Drops Down

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 2,000 ante
Chris Tryba - Looking at himself on PokerNews.com

Brown: {x-}{x-} / {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts} / {x-}
Tryba: {x-}{x-} / {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} / {x-}

Chad Brown had raised and Chris Tryba made it two bets, Brown called and then took the lead in the betting when he made open queens on fourth. Tryba called him down all the way and Brown showed {A-}{J-}{x-} for just a pair of queens, Tryba turned over {K-Hearts}{x-}{x-} for kings to pip him for a decent pot.

Landfish no Fish

We missed most of the hand but heard Steve Landfish say "I got there" as he showed three hearts from his hole to go with two on his board which gave him a flush. The flush was good against his opponent in the hand, Alexander Kostritsyn, in a battle between our two chip leaders where Landfish widened his lead dramatically while Kostritsyn took a major step back.

Matt Glantz Eliminated in 15th Place ($20,916)

Matt Glantz - 15th place
Matt Glantz - 15th place

Matt Glantz found himself all in before fifth street against Steve Landfish. We arrived at the table and the cards were a bit all over the place, but Glantz's two pair were inferior to Landfish's.

Glantz: {6-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades} {J-Diamonds} (not necessarily in that order)
Landfish: {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} (not necessarily in that order)

Glantz didn't fill up on seventh street, exiting the tournament in 15th place.

Schulman Doubles Through Wahlbeck

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 2,000 ante

By fifth street, Nick Schulman was showing a board of {K-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} against Ville Wahlbeck's {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{A-Spades} when the Finn raised, in effect, Schulman all in. Schulman called with {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} in the whole and Wahlbeck showed {8-Spades}{5-Spades} for a flush draw. Wahlbeck missed on sixth, Schulman improved to aces and kings by seventh while Wahlbeck was left to sweat his final card.

"It's black..." announced Wahlbeck.

"It's black?" replied Schulman, a tad concerned.

"No, it's not," answered the Finn, showing the {8-Hearts} to much giggling.

Mercier Doubles Through Tryba

Mercier: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} / {3-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} / {Q-Spades}
Tryba: {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} / {8-Spades}{J-Spades}{5-Clubs}{7-Spades} / {K-Diamonds}
Tang: {X-}{X-} / {10-Clubs}{5-Hearts} FOLDED

Jason Mercier was all in on fourth and at risk but leading with a pair of 9s against Chris Tryba’s 8s. Tryba picked up an open-ended straight draw on sixth but wasn’t able to improve on seventh which gave Mercier the double up. He was commended quite nicely by some tablemates on how he played the hand where he managed to get Tang to fold.
