King on the Turn Sends Nguyen to the Rail

Kennii Nguyen on Day 1.
Kennii Nguyen on Day 1.

We caught the action on the {9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{10-Spades} when Kennii Nguyen had checked and Stanislav Barshak bet 13,000. Nguyen responded by check-raising to 33,500, Barshak moved all in, and Nguyen called off for 96,500 more.

"I have you beat right now," Nguyen said when the cards were tabled.

Showdown
Nguyen: {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}
Barshak: {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}

While Nguyen was correct in that he was ahead at that moment, he was drawing dead when the {K-Hearts} spiked on the turn to give Barshak a straight. The meaningless {6-Hearts} was run out on the river as a dejected Nguyen made his way to the payout desk in 70th place.
