Rast Tops After Day 1 of One Drop; 37 Remain

Level 9 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Brian Rast leads after Day 1
Brian Rast leads after Day 1

The World Series of Poker has reached an all-time high, not just for its own history, but also for poker history across the globe. The $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop became the largest buy-in in poker history today as it kicked off with 48 players plopping down the massive seven-figure price of entry. At the end of the first nine levels of play, 37 players remained with Brian Rast on top of them all with 10.71 million.

Going into the day, the excitement was building and you could feel the electricity in the air. An elaborate Cirque du Soleil performance highlighted the introductions as each of the participants was announced one by one to the spectators as the ESPN cameras rolled. A little bit before 2:00 PM in the afternoon, the cards were in the air and the chips were flying.

The first player eliminated on the day was Justin Smith. He lost a massive hand for nearly all of his chips right before the first break when he paid off Frederic Banjout on the river with an eight-high straight. Banjout had backed into the nut flush to win the pot. On the first hand back from the break, Smith's {Q-Hearts}{5-Spades} lost to Rast's {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}.

Rast then claimed the scalp of Andrew Robl when he made the nut flush against Robl's pair of kings. On the {Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop in a four-bet pot, Rast and Robl got all the money in. Rast held he {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} versus Robl's {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and spiked as the board ran out with the {9-Hearts} and {9-Clubs}.

The other players that were eliminated on the day included Jens Kyllönen, Jonathan Duhamel, Paul Phua, Erik Seidel, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Nick Schulman, Eugene Katchalov, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi and Giovanni Guarascio.

Mizrachi was the second-to-last player eliminated on the day, falling at the hands of Mike Sexton. On the {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{5-Clubs} board, Mizrachi moved all in for his last 180,000 with the {3-Spades}{2-Clubs}. Sexton called with the {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}. After the river landed with the {10-Hearts}, Mizrachi's million dollar tournament was over with.

Of those advancing to Day 2 are Jason Mercier, Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Ben Lamb, Sam Trickett and Phil Ivey. Twelve-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth also survived and will be taking 8.395 million in chips to Day 2.

Action for Day 2 will begin at 12:00 PM PT and the plan it to play all the way down until the final table of nine is set. With over $18.3 million up for grabs for first place, everyone will be bringing their best game to the felt and looking to run it up. It's going to be an absolutely amazing day of poker and you won't want to miss out on any of it.

Grinder Gone

Michael Mizrachi is eliminated.
Michael Mizrachi is eliminated.

Michael Mizrachi raised to 100,000 from the small blind, and Mike Sexton called from the big. The flop fell {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{j-Spades}, and Mizrachi led for 70,000. Sexton called.

The turn was the {5-Clubs}, and Mizrachi moved all in for 180,000. Sexton tanked for nearly a minute, then called.

"I've got nothing," Mizrachi sighed, flipping over {3-Spades}{2-Clubs}.

Sexton had {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for a pair of jacks, and the {10-Hearts} completed the board, giving him Broadway and eliminating Mizrachi from the tournament.

Schulman Shut Out

Nick Schulman
Nick Schulman

We caught up with this one on the flop, with three players still in — Eugene Katchalov (big blind), Antonio Esfandiari (hijack), and Nick Schulman (cutoff).

The board read {3-Spades}{J-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and Katchalov had just checked. Esfandiari fired a bet of 123,000, then Schulman raised to 277,000, forcing a fold from Katchalov. Esfandiari thought a moment, then called.

The turn brought the {Q-Spades} and a bet of 362,000 from Esfandiari. That sent Schulman into the tank for a full minute or so, after which he finally emerged to raise all in for about 1.1 million, and Esfandiari called.

Esfandiari: {Q-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Schulman: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}

Two pair for Esfandiari, better than Schulman's overpair. The river came the {8-Diamonds}, and Schulman is out. Exactly 40 players remain.

ElkY Gone

Bertrand Grospellier
Bertrand Grospellier

Jason Mercier raised to 60,000 from middle position and Noah Schwartz called from the cutoff seat. Gus Hansen called from the button and then Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier called from the big blind.

The flop came down {J-Spades}{9-}{7-Spades} and action checked over to Hansen. He bet 111,000 and Grospellier check-raised all in for 444,000. Mercier got out of the way before both Schwartz and Hansen called.

The turn was a {7-} and both Schwartz and Hansen checked. They also checked after an {8-} fell on the river.

Schwartz showed the {J-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for two pair, jacks and eights. Hansen showed the {J-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a full house and Grospellier showed the {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}. Hansen won the pot and eliminated Grospellier.

Negreanu Busts Phua

Paul Phua has been eliminated.
Paul Phua has been eliminated.

Daniel Negreanu opened to 52,000 from early position, and the action folded to Paul Phua who moved all in for 418,000 from the cutoff. The button and blinds released, and Negreanu made the call.

Negreanu: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Phua: {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

Negreanu's wired eights held as the board ran out {3-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, and Phua was eliminated.

"Sorry Paul," Negreanu offered after the hand.

Phua made a quick pit stop at Table 401 to perhaps give Richard Yong a bad beat story, then exited the Amazon Room.

Palihapitiya Among the Pros

Chamath Palihapitiya
Chamath Palihapitiya

Daniel Negreanu opened for 52,000 from middle position and got no less than five callers. "Wow!" said Negreanu, as Phil Hellmuth in the big blind became the fifth opponent to see the flop with him.

That flop came {9-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, and when it checked to Negreanu he bet 162,000. Chamath Palihapitiya then raised from a couple of seats over, and when it folded back to Hellmuth he asked how much the raise was for.

A count revealed Palihapitiya had only put 305,000 forward — not enough for a minimum-raise — and so he added chips to make it 325,000. Hellmuth called, and Negreanu folded.

Hellmuth and Palihapitiya both checked quickly when the turn brought the {3-Diamonds} and river the {8-Diamonds}. "Ace-nine," said Palihapitiya, showing {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. "You got lucky," said Hellmuth, turning over {5-Spades}{2-Spades} for busted straight and flush draws. "I had you beat," he added, referring to their relative chances after the flop.

The pair continued the banter a little, with Palihapitiya noting he'd "misclicked" when he raised, not seeing Negreanu's bet clearly. When Hellmuth continued his dissertation on why he is the better of the two players, Palihapitiya had a quick response.

"I'll see you at the final table," he retorted with a smirk. "Where I will mock you!"

The table chuckled, and Palihapitiya got up to walk over to the next table where he put a couple of hands on Phil Ivey's shoulders. Ben Lamb stood up. "You must be winning if you're walking," he said to Palihapitiya, who proceeded to relate the previous hand to Lamb while still massaging Ivey.

Negreanu Finds a Double

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

From the hijack seat, Daniel Negreanu raised to 52,000 before action folded to Paul Phua in the small blind and he asked how much Negreanu had. Negreanu said he had 620,000 total and Phua said he would like to raise to that amount. He made it 620,000 and Negreanu thought for a minute before calling all in.

Negreanu: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}
Phua: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}

The flop, turn and river ran out {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}{2-Clubs}{K-Spades}{4-Clubs} and Negreanu won the pot to double up. He moved back to nearly 1.3 million while Phua was knocked down to 226,000.

Perkins Flops Straight, Eliminates Duhamel

Jonathan Dumamel and Bill Perkins
Jonathan Dumamel and Bill Perkins

Brian Rast opened for 45,000 from under the gun and got four callers — Jonathan Duhamel (hijack), Bill Perkins (cutoff), Richard Yong (small blind), and Brandon Steven (big blind).

The flop came {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades}, and it checked around to Duhamel who bet 115,000. The action on Perkins, he stared at the board for a few seconds, then looked over at Duhamel, then at the dealer. "Raise," he said, then after carving out the calling chips, added another 350,000 for a total bet of 465,000.

The table promptly folded back to Duhamel who thought for a moment, then slid his remaining stack of about 325,000 forward to call.

Perkins tabled {8-Spades}{7-Spades} for a flopped straight, while Duhamel showed {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for top pair and a flush draw. The turn was the {K-Hearts} and river the {8-Hearts}, and Table 401 has claimed yet another victim here just before the dinner break.
