Event #24: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 1 Started

Event #24 Kicks Off at Noon

Welcome back for another day of the 44th annual World Series of Poker. Here in 2013, there are nine single-entry $1,500 no-limit hold'em events, and another one will be kicking off today. This event is the third of its kind of the summer, with the first two drawing 1,819 players and 2,105 players, respectively. Another field around the 2,000-player mark is expected for to gather today.

In the last $1,500 no-limit hold'em event, Athanasios Polychronopoulos earned his second WSOP gold bracelet to become part of the elite club of multiple bracelet winners. We much expect Polychronopoulos to be back in the mix today gunning for a third, along with handfuls of other notable faces.

Also on the slate for June 13 are the conclusion of Event #20: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Low 8-or-Better and Event #21: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em (Six Handed). There is also the Day 2s of Event #22: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha and Event #23: $2,500 Seven-Card Stud, and then Event #25: $5,000 Omaha Hi-Low 8-or-Better will be starting at 5 p.m.

PokerNews will have you covered all day long, but right now let's kick it over to our very own Lynn Gilmartin for a more in-depth look at everything that's happening around the Rio.

Play in Event #24 is scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m. local time in Las Vegas, so let's get ready to rock and roll!

Polychronopoulos Goes For Two In a Row

Athanasios Polychronopoulos
Athanasios Polychronopoulos

After winning his second career bracelet just a few days ago in Event #17 $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em, Athanasios Polychronopoulos is going for a back-to-back, third career bracelet today.

Polychronopoulos has proven to be a moving force in the $1,500 buy-in events, winning both of his bracelets in these grueling, 2,000-plus entrant fields. First it was in 2011, where he beat a field of 2,713 for first place, and just a few days ago he beat out 2,105 competitors for his second gold bracelet. Polychronopoulos showed up early today and is looking to build a quick stack as action gets underway in the Brasilia room.

Tai Nguyen Off to Bad Start

Level 1 : 25/25, 0 ante

Tai Nguyen had a great finish to the $1,000 event on Tuesday. He finished third for $147,220. He will be looking to get off the ground today to repeat that success.

When we came upon Nguyen, he had reraised to 950 on a flop of {9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades} when his opponent raised his bet. His opponent called, and Nguyen bet out 1,350 on a turn of the {q-Diamonds}. He was called again. The river came the {10-Spades}. Both players checked. Nguyen held {a-Spades}{9-Hearts} for a pair of nines, but his opponent flipped up {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for trip deuces.

With that, Nguyen's day has started in the wrong direction because he is down to 2,100.
