Madsen Leads 19 into Final Day

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Jeff Madsen
Jeff Madsen

They call it the "action game," and so it was no surprise to see the chips flying back and forth at a rapid pace throughout the second day of Event #35: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha. Most of them ultimately ended up moving in the direction of Jeff Madsen, who began building a stack mid-afternoon, seized the chip lead after dinner break, and ended Day 2 with the chip lead by a wide margin among the final 19.

A total of 137 returned from the starting field of 640, with the final 72 making the money. The bubble proved a tough one to burst, with hand-for-hand play lasting about 40 minutes. Once in the money, the cashers included Jared Hamby (65th), Tom Schneider (60th), Josh Arieh (58th), Padraig Parkinson (52nd), Jamie Pickering (51st), Steve Landfish (47th), Kevin Iacofano (45th), Jared Bleznick (31st), Andrey Pateychuk (30th), Steve Sung (29th), Phil Hellmuth (26th), Jonathan Duhamel (24th), and Will Failla (23rd).

Madsen, a two-time WSOP bracelet winner, ended Day 2 with a stack of 922,000, nearly 400,000 clear of another two-time bracelet holder, Scott Clements. Ashton Griffin, Jason DeWitt, Jarred Solomon, Mike Sexton, and Christian Harder will also be returning for tomorrow's third and final day of play.

Also coming back tomorrow in third position is yet another bracelet winner in Isaac Hagerling who just picked up his hardware in Event #27: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Mixed Max earlier this week. Hagerling pushed up to the top of the counts at the very end of play tonight after winning a big pot versus Clements (see just below).

Players return on Friday at 2 p.m. to see who among the 19 will earn the next WSOP bracelet of 2013. We'll be back then as well to bring you all of the action from start-to-finish.

Clements Had "Too Many Outs"

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Isaac Hagerling
Isaac Hagerling

Scott Clements opened to 20,000 in late position, Isaac Hagerling, who recently won the Mixed Max event, three-bet to 78,000 from the blinds, and Clements called.

The dealer fanned {9-Spades}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs}, Hagerling led out with a pot-sized bet of 129,000, and Clements moved all in for 155,500. Hagerling called.

Clements: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}{j-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Hagerling: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Clements held a wrap, a flush draw, and an overcard to Hagerling's red pair of kings, but the turn and the river were both non-spade fours ({4-Hearts} and {4-Clubs}), and Hagerling doubled.

"He had too many outs," Hagerling said after the hand smiling.

Hagerling shipped a massive double on the last hand of the night, while Clements went from potential chip leader, back down to around 600,000.

Maryska and Sexton Double

Mike Sexton

Michal Maryska raised to 15,000, Ali Lareybi three-bet to 48,000 out of the blinds, and Maryska moved all in for 163,000. Lareybi called.

Maryska: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{q-Spades}{2-Clubs}
Lareybi: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

"Wait," Lareybi told the dealer then turned to Maryska. "Chop it right now?"

The two shared a laugh, but Lareybi's smiled escaped him when the flop came {4-Clubs}{2-Spades}{2-Hearts}, giving Maryska trip deuces. Lareybi was unable to fill up or make the wheel when the turn and river came {6-Hearts}, {9-Diamonds}, and Maryska doubled.

On an adjacent table, Mike Sexton raised to 15,000, Steven Loube called out of the blinds, and the flop came {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Loube check-called a bet of 21,000 from the WPT legend, and the turn brought the {k-Diamonds}. Loube checked, Sexton fired out 40,000, and Loube check-raised all in for 83,000. Sexton called.

Loube: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Sexton: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

Sexton's set held as the {j-Spades} completed the board, and he doubled.

Giuseppe Pantaleo Eliminated in 21st Place ($11,915)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Guiseppe Pantaleo
Guiseppe Pantaleo

Preflop Ali Lareybi raised from middle position, Giuseppe Pantaleo reraised from late position, and Lareybi called. Then after the dealer spread the first three community cards — {Q-Clubs}{K-Spades}{7-Spades} — it was a bet from Lareybi, a raise all in for a little more from Pantaleo, and a call.

Lareybi: {10-Spades}{9-Hearts}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts}
Pantaleo: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}

The turn brought the {J-Spades}, making a flush for Lareybi and making the river {8-Spades} no matter. Pantaleo is out, and now just 20 players remain as the clock shows just 10 minutes more left to go this evening.

Will Failla Eliminated in 23rd Place ($11,915); Brent Johnson Eliminated in 22nd Place ($11,915)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Will Failla - 23rd Place
Will Failla - 23rd Place

Will Failla raised in middle position, Scott Clements three-bet on his direct left, Brent Johnson flatted on the button, and Failla raised the pot. Clements re-potted, prompting Failla to beg for a hold before Johnson could even act, and after around 90 second, Johnson called all-in.

There was nearly 700,000 in the middle when all three hands were opened.

Failla: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Clements: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Johnson: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

The flop fell {5-Clubs}{q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, giving Johnson and Clements the same gut-shot straight draw. The {10-Clubs} on the turn gave both players said straight, but Clements was free rolling to make both Broadway and a club flush.

The {k-Spades} completed the board, giving the Washingtonian Broadway and eliminating both Failla and Johnson.

"At least they went to my friend," Failla sighed after the hand.

Both he and Johnson will receive $11,915 for their efforts, while Clements is back among the chip leaders.

Jonathan Duhamel Eliminated in 24th Place ($11,915)

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Jonathan Duhamel - 24th Place
Jonathan Duhamel - 24th Place

Ryan Chapman, Jonathan Duhamel, and Jarred Solomon took a flop of {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Chapman checked, Duhamel bet the pot, and Solomon folded. Chapman called all in for 77,500.

Chapman: {q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Duhamel: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Chapman held as the turn and river came {5-Clubs}, {5-Spades} respectively, leaving Duhamel with just 10,000 chips.

The next hand, Duhamel was in the small blind, and Christian Harder raised to 12,000. Solomon called, Duhamel called all in for 7,000, and Jeff Madsen defended his big blind. All three players checked when the flop came {4-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}, and Madsen led out for 23,000 when the {a-Hearts} turned. Everybody folded.

Duhamel: {a-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Madsen: {9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

Duhamel could make a full house wit an ace or a four on the river, but the {9-Clubs} bricked off and the 2010 Main Event champion was eliminated.

A blind-against-blind battle at Table 410 resulted in Philippe Boucher being all in from the small blind with {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs} versus the big blind Anthony Zinno's {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{J-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {Q-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{K-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Spades}, and Boucher was knocked out in 25th place.

Phil Hellmuth Eliminated in 26th Place ($11,915)

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Phil Hellmuth - 26th Place
Phil Hellmuth - 26th Place

Joni Jouhkimainen raised to 12,000 from under the gun, Phil Hellmuth called on his direct left, Jarred Solomon called in the cutoff, and Jeff Madsen defended his big blind.

The dealer fanned {8-Hearts}{q-Spades}{5-Hearts}, Madsen and Jouhkimainen both checked, and Hellmuth fired out 40,000. Solomon folded, Madsen raised the pot, and Jouhkimainen folded. Hellmuth re-potted, going all in, and Madsen called.

"Please tell me you have a set," Hellmuth said, showing {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for a set of queens.

"Two pair and a flush draw," Madsen responded, fanning {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}.

The turn was the {6-Hearts}, giving Madsen a heart flush, and Hellmuth needed the board to pair on the river. The {j-Hearts} didn't give Hellmuth a full house, however, and he was eliminated.

Cue the blowup.

"F***in' idiot morons," Hellmuth said, standing. "F***in' play all day for this. Worst f***in' player ever."

He started to move away from the table, and as he passed Madsen he added more.

"How do you even have all of those chips?"

From an adjacent table, two players jabbed Hellmuth once he was out of earshot.

"There goes the last no-limit hold'em player," one joked.

"Yeah," the other responded. "Field just got tougher."

Joshua Ladines - 28th Place

Joshua Ladines was all in and at risk for his last 130,000 on a flop of {2-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} against Jeff Madsen. Ladines tabled {j-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades}, and Madsen flipped over {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}.

"Run it twice?" Ladines asked, grinning.

Ladines bricked out as the turn and river came {q-Clubs}, {a-Diamonds} respectively, and was eliminated in 28th place. We are down to three tables and will bring you a redraw shortly.
