Level 8
Bertrand Grospellier
Bertrand Grospellier

No-Limit Hold'em

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier just earned a boost to his stack following a no-limit hold'em hand with Kevin Song. The pair traded bets to fourth street and with the board showing {6-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{K-Clubs} Song check-called a bet by Grospellier, building a pot of around 80,000.

The river brought the {J-Hearts} and another check from Song, and this time Grospellier bet 33,000. Song thought for a while before folding, and after being down for a while ElkY has nudged his stack back up close to the 150,000 with which he started the tournament yesterday.

Ashton vs. Volpe

Level 8

No-Limit Hold'em

Action folded to Paul Volpe in the hijack and he raised to 3,500. The cutoff folded, Matthew Ashton called from the button and both blinds got out of the way. When the flop came down {6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{4-Clubs}, Volpe bet 5,200, Ashton called and the dealer burned and turned the {q-Clubs}.

Volpe led out for 13,600 and Ashton took a long time before raising to 32,400. It was enough to get the job done as Volpe tossed his cards to the muck.

Two in a Row for Smith; Ivey and Yitzhaki Knocked Back

Level 8
Justin Smith (Day 1)
Justin Smith (Day 1)

No-Limit Hold'em

From under the gun, Jason Mercier raised to 4,000. George Danzer called in the cutoff seat, Justin Smith called from the button, and Phil Ivey called from the big blind. On the {6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop, Ivey led for 10,000 with roughly 50,000 behind. Mercier and Danzer folded, then Smith raised all in to put Ivey to the text. Ivey folded, and Smith won the pot.

On the very next hand, Roman Yitzhaki opened to 4,000 from early position, and Smith reraised from the cutoff seat to 12,000. Yitzhaki made the call, and the dealer spread out the {Q-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} on the flop. Yitzhaki checked, Smith bet 13,000, and Yitzhaki called.

The turn was the {K-Clubs}, and Yitzhaki checked. Smith fired 26,000, and Yitzhaki folded.

Thuritz Takes from Hellmuth

Level 8

No-Limit Hold'em

After a cutoff raise by Mikael Thuritz, Phil Hellmuth defended his big blind and then checked in the dark before the dealer spread the {J-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop. Thuritz checked behind, then the turn brought the {J-Diamonds} and another check from Hellmuth. This time Thuritz bet 14,500, and after leaning forward and examining the situation for a few moments Hellmuth called.

The river was the {8-Hearts}. Hellmuth quickly checked, and Thuritz set out chips to bet 41,000. Hellmuth rocked back and forth in his seat as he began muttering to himself, then as he folded the muttering continued until rising up to a more audible "good hand, sir." Thuritz said thanks as he collected chips.

Lindgren Gives It Up to Hang

Level 8

No-Limit Hold'em

Tommy Hang opened for 4,000 from the hijack and Erick Lindgren called him from the button. The blinds folded, the flop fell {10-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Hang led out for 6,500. Lindgren made the call and then watched Hang fire out 18,000 more on the {Q-Clubs} turn. Lindgren thought for a bit before tossing in a call and the {4-Clubs} completed the board on the river. Hang kept the pressure on and Lindgren thought for about a minute before conceding the hand.

"One Hand Every Hour"

Level 8

Omaha-8

Doyle Brunson, who is playing in his first tournament of the summer, opened for 6,000 under the gun. Allen Kessler called from the cutoff and then Andrey Zaichenko came along from the big blind making it three-way action to the {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} flop.

Zaichenko checked, Brunson bet 3,000 and two calls followed. When the {J-Hearts} turned, two checks put action on Kessler and he bet 6,000. Zaichenko and Brunson made the call and then both checked the {A-Hearts} river. Kessler bet another 6,000 and this time both his opponents folded.

"One hand every hour," Kessler said as he stacked his chips.

Lindgren Over Hansen

Level 8

Stud

Phil Ivey was just moved over to an empty seat on Table 359, one that just happened to be situated in between Erick Lindgren (on his left) and Gus Hansen (on his right).

Recently a stud hand developed between Ivey's two neighbors and he watched from his seat in between. The pair had reached sixth street, with Hansen betting out while showing {3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Spades} and Lindgren calling with {J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}.

"Ahh… what do I have to beat?" said Hansen after seeing Lindgren call him again in the hand. The seventh street cards were then dealt, and after looking his over for a few seconds Hansen checked and Lindgren checked behind.

Lindgren then tabled his down cards — {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for jacks and tens — and Hansen studied all seven of his for awhile before sliding them forward face down. The dealer was about to take them and he stopped her for a moment.

"Wait," said Hansen. "Is it high-low?" He looked at the placard indicating the game was high only, and with a grin Hansen said "damn" and at last gave up his cards.
