First Break of Day Five: Jon Lane Still Leads

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jonathan Lane
Jonathan Lane

The first level of Day 5 is in the books. Out of the 239 players who started the day, now only 187 remain. Jon Lane, who started the day at the top of the leaderboard, still leads with over three million in chips. After the flurry of eliminations in post-bubble play during yesterday’s first level, the bustouts came much more slowly today. One of the reasons for that is likely the increase in payouts. Today’s first bustout, Donald Swartz, received $37,019, nearly twice as much as the first player paid yesterday. More importantly, with over 6,000 players eliminated and only about 200 bustouts to go before the final table, players are starting to look ahead to a potential $ 8,359,531 payday.

Shawn Sheikhan was among the early eliminations today. He was knocked out by 2012 Main Event final tablist Steve Gee. Vivek Rajkumar, who had a tough table draw with Jonathan Jaffe, Tommy Chen, Brett Richey, and defending Main Event champion Greg Merson on his left, made a valiant effort to build his stack early in the day. It didn't last, however, as he busted out when Nick Schwarmann made a flush to beat Rajkumar's pocket queens.

Several well-known players are building impressive stacks. Max Steinberg, one of the chips leaders on Day 4, picked up right where he left off yesterday with the help of quads on the first hand of the day. Rachid Ben Cherif is climbing the leaderboard as well, as is Jason Cohen.

Young pro Amit Makhija also busted out today. He was eliminated by Beverly Lange, an amateur player from near Austin, Texas, who has over a million chips. Lange joins the list of women making deep runs in the Main Event this year alongside known pros like Jackie Glazier and Annette Obrestad.

Players return to their tables in 20 minutes. We'll have complete chip counts for you soon, and we'll be back with all the action when play resumes.

Merson Moves In

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Yann Dion raised it up to 40,000 in middle position, and action folded to Greg Merson in the small blind. He moved all in, a bet of 460,000 total, and it folded back to Dion. He tanked for about a minute before folding, and Merson took down the pot without a showdown.

Rettenmaier Picks One Off

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Marvin Rettenmaier raised to 42,000, and the only caller was Adeeb Harb in the big blind. Both players checked the {6-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop, and then they checked again when the {2-Clubs} fell on the turn. The river was the {5-Spades}, and Harb led out for 60,000. Rettenmaier thought for a moment, then called and turned over [adh8] for ace high. Harb mucked, and Rettenmaier took the pot.

Pinedamoncada and Jones Bust During the Break

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

As the break began, Raul Paez opened to 33,000 in early position, Jose Pinedamoncada three-bet to 102,000 in middle position, and Jason Mann cold four-bet to 283,000 on the button. Paez folded, Pinedamoncada five-bet to 548,000, and Mann six-bet to 1.002 million. Pinedamoncada moved all in for 1.516 million, and Mann snap-called.

Pinedamoncada: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Mann: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

The aces held up as the board rolled out {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}, and Pinedamoncada hit the rail.

On an adjacent table, Ryan Jones was all in and at risk, and Brian Appelbaum tank-called.

Jones: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Appelbaum: {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}

Jones was at risk for 257,000, and remained ahead on the flop ({8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}) and on the turn ({j-Spades}).

"Sorry for the bad beat," Appelbaum told Jones.

As if he knew it was coming, the {3-Hearts} spiked on the river to give Appelbaum a set of threes. Jones jumped out of his chair and quickly grabbed his things, while Appelbaum apologetically asked if Jones would shake his hand. Jones refused, and instead gave the gentleman dap before hitting the rail.

Shaun Conning Eliminated By Annette Obrestad

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Following a {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} flop, Shaun Conning got his stack of about 560,000 into the middle with {Q-}{J-}. Annette Obrestad had him beat with {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for Broadway and held up through the {K-Clubs} turn and {10-Spades} river to score the elimination.

Triple for Preite

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Blake Yu raised to 40,000 in the hijack seat, and Marc McLaughlin made the call on the button. In the big blind, Gaetano Preite reraised all in for 193,000. Yu made the call, then McLaughlin reraised to 570,000. Yu tanked for a bit, then folded, leaving McLaughlin's {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} up against the at-risk Preite's {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}.

The flop smashed Preite with the {10-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. The turn was the {4-Clubs} and the river the {7-Hearts}. Preite finished with a full house to successfully earn the triple up.
