After Being Down To One Big Blind, Fernandez Goes Over 1.1 Million

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Last year, it was champion Greg Merson who was down to three big blinds on the bubble before running his stack back up and eventually winning the event. This year, Pedro Fernandez could very well be that story. Fernandez was down to just one big blind a couple of levels ago, before quintupling up and then doubling up the very next hand. He's since run his stack up to 1.16 million in chips, with this latest pot going his way.

From under the gun, Cary Marshall raised to 65,000. Fernandez three-bet to 150,000 from the big blind, and Marshall made the call. The flop came down {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades}, and Fernandez checked. Marshall bet 125,000, and Fernandez called.

The turn was the {J-Hearts}, and both players checked to see the {6-Diamonds} land on the turn. Fernandez fired 300,000, and Marshall responded with "That's strong!" He then thought for a little bit, and folded. to give Fernandez the pot.

Newhouse Knocks Out Maruf

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Mark Newhouse
Mark Newhouse

Taha Maruf raised to 48,000 from the cutoff seat and only Mark Newhouse called from the button. The flop came {7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. Maruf checked, Newhouse bet 60,000, and Maruf called.

The turn then brought the {8-Clubs}. Maruf bet 180,000 this time, then Newhouse raised to 375,000. Maruf waited for a few seconds, then announced he was all in and Newhouse called right away.

Maruf had {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs} for the flush while Newhouse had {7-Spades}{7-Hearts} for a set of sevens. Maruf had the lead, but the river brought the {8-Hearts} to pair the board and improve Newhouse to a flush, and Maruf has been eliminated just shy of the end of Level 23 and the dinner break.

Renkers Out; McLaughin Takes Chip Lead

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Patrick Renkers
Patrick Renkers

The action folded to Patrick Renkers in the hi-jack and he opened to 55,000 only to have Marc McLaughlin three-bet the button to 139,000. Once the play returned to Renkers, he pushed out 345,000 only to have McLaughlin five-bet to 660,000.

The Dutchman considered his options then moved all in for 2,580,000 with McLaughlin snap-calling!

Renkers: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
McLaughlin: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}

With Renkers in trouble and needing to find one of the two case queens, the {10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop changed little apart from giving Renkers backdoor outs to a straight. The turn of the {5-Hearts} would leave him with just two outs, but when the {5-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, Renkers was sent to the rail as McLaughlin soared to 5,820,000 in chips.

Porter Hits Three Outer To Double

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

JC Tran raised it up to 52,000 under the gun +1, and Oliver Price reraised to 121,000 next to act. It folded around to Rep Porter on the button, and he moved all in for his last 434,000. Tran got out of the way, but Price quickly called.

Price: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Porter: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Price was in great shape to score the knockout, and he kept that lead as the flop came out {5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Porter had only three cards that would give him the lead, and one of those, the {q-Spades}, came on the turn. Price was now looking for a king or a jack, but the river brought the {2-Spades}.

Porter got the full double to 960,000, while Price, who took the beat without any sort of reaction, dropped to 989,000.

Benefield Up to Three Million

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
David Benefield
David Benefield

We missed the exact details, but Christopher Kinane check-called a bet from David Benefield on every street as the board came {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. Kinane showed {q-Spades}{q-Clubs} for a pair of queens, but it was no good against Benefield's {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} for a pair of kings.

Benefield is up to three million chips, while Kinane is down to 865,000.

Pellegrino in Trouble

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Hoa Luong moved all in for 256,000 from the cutoff seat, and Bryan Pellegrino called on the button. Both blinds released.

Luong: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Pellegrino: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Pellegrino was ahead, and held dominating hearts, but the flop fell {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds} to give Luong trip tens. The hand was over when the {3-Clubs} turned, and a meaningless {a-Spades} completed the board.

Luong doubled to 568,000 chips, while Pellegrino slipped to 605,000.

Halling Hurting

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Gaetano Preite raised to 52,000 from early position and Fredrik Halling called from middle position. Action folded over to Roberto Damelian, who three-bet to 122,000 from the button. Preite folded, and Halling called.

On the {Q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop, Halling checked and Damelian bet 162,000. Halling called, and the {10-Diamonds} hit the turn. Halling quickly knuckled the table, and Damelian fired again, this time for 350,000. Halling called.

The river was the {3-Diamonds}, and Halling checked for a third time. Damelian moved all in, and after a few minutes pondering a decision, Halling folded, leaving himself with just over 550,000. Damelian, meanwhile, is closing in on 3 million.
