Mortensen Doubles

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Richard Robinson opened the preflop action with a raise to 50,000. Carlos Mortensen reraised to 180,000 from the small blind, and Robinson responded with a four-bet big enough to put Mortensen all in. Mortensen called for his last 369,000.

Mortensen: {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Robinson: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}

The flop fell {4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{a-Spades}, giving Mortensen a pair of aces and the lead. The turn was the {2-Diamonds}, giving Robinson outs to a chop if a {5-} came, but the river was the {2-Clubs}, and Mortensen doubled up.

Started From the Bottom, Now We Here

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

A few hours ago, Pedro Fernandez was reduced to a single big blind when he lost a race with pocket jacks against ace-queen. He proceeded to quintuple up the next hand, and then double back up to around 10 big blinds.

Now, after winning a race with ace-queen against jacks, Fernandez is up to 820,000 chips.

All of the money went in the middle preflop between Fernandez, who had {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}, and Fabian Ortiz, who showed {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. Fernandez took the lead when the flop fell {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{k-Hearts}, and held as the turn and river came {k-Diamonds}, {2-Spades} respectively.

Ortiz was left with just 225,000 chips, while Fernandez's comeback story is still alive and well.

Roger Hendren Doubles Through Jon Lane

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

After Jon Lane raised from the hijack and William Te Jr. called from the cutoff, Roger Hendren three-bet all in for an additional 360,000 on the button. Lane gave it some thought before calling, while Te Jr. folded. Lane showed {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}, but he was behind Hendren's {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}. The board ran out {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}, no help to Lane, securing the double for Hendren.

Lange Forces Lay Down from Steven

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

We came upon a big fifth-street decision being considered by Brandon Steven in a hand versus Beverly Lange just now. A big pot had developed between the pair by then, with the board running out an intriguing {4-Spades}{K-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}.

Steven had made a river bet, then Lange had raised all in for 268,000 more and Steven took several minutes to make his decision. While he did, the television cameras swarmed to capture the ending of the hand, and eventually Steven engaged Lange in some table talk, perhaps in an effort to help him with his decision.

Steven asked Lange where she was from and what she did for a living. Texas, she answered, going on to explain in detail how she works with a company that produces football halftime shows and also enjoys traveling. They asked each other their names, too, as the conversation continued, and finally Lange asked Steven if any of what she was saying was helpful.

Steven nodded and said it was, adding "I know I have the worst hand." Yet he still wasn't sure about folding it, and took another minute or so more to think, apologizing to the table for taking so long.

Finally Steven decided to let his hand go, and showed one card — the {K-Diamonds} — as he did. Lange then showed her cards — {J-}{J-} — and the table and all those watching reacted audibly after seeing she'd in fact had the second-best hand.

Lange smiled and collected the chips, adding "I'm just a little girl from Texas" as she did.

Matthew Huey
Matthew Huey

The action folded around to Matthew Huey in the small blind, who moved all in for his last 437,000 in chips. Nicolas Le Floch was on the big blind, and looked down at his cards, before going into the tank. Over a minute went by, before he made the call.

Huey: {9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Le Floch: {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

The board ran out {k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades} to see Huey spike a pair on the turn, doubling him up to 910,000.

Cornell Shows the Bluff

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Josh Prager raised from middle position to 55,000. James Alexander called behind him, Jon Lane called from the cutoff seat, then Tyler Cornell three-bet to 227,000 out of the big blind. Prager folded, Alexander called, and Lane folded.

Play was heads up to the {K-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts} flop, and Cornell fired 235,000. Alexander called to see the {3-Diamonds} land on the turn. Cornell lead again, this time for 350,000. Alexander tanked and even asked if Cornell had aces. Eventually, he folded, and Cornell won the pot. Cornell showed the {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} for just ace high with a gutshot straight draw, prompting Alexander to pull his hat down over his head.

Petit Doubles Through Rettenmaier

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

With {q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} on the flop, Marvin Rettenmaier bet 52,000. Danard Petit called, and the dealer turned the {k-Hearts}. Rettenmaier bet out again, this time for 126,000. Petit raised all-in for 758,000, and Rettenmaier called.

Rettenmaier: {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Petit: {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

The river was the {8-Hearts}, and Petit completed his flush to beat Rettenmaier's set. Petit recently doubled up against Carlos Mortensen, and has now doubled up again.

Ashton Griffin Eliminated

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Ashton Griffin
Ashton Griffin

Ashton Griffin, one of the most accomplished players left in the field, has just seen his 2013 Main Event come to an end.

Goran Mandic raised it up to 50,000 in middle position, and Griffin moved all in for his last 323,000. Sergio Castelluccio was two seats over, and he asked for a count. After about 45 seconds in the tank, he made the call, and Mandic ducked out of the way to get us to a showdown.

Griffin: {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Castelluccio: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Griffin was in need of an ace to survive, but it would never come, as the board ran down {5-Spades}{2-Spades}{9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}. Castellucio took down the pot to up his stack to 1.637 million, while Griffin is ousted short of the dinner break on Day 5.
