Marshall Counterfeited

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

On the paired {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop, Cary Marshall check-called a bet of 100,000 from Erkut Yilmaz. The turn was the {6-Hearts}, and Yilmaz fired 180,000 after Marshall checked. Marshall again called. The river completed the board with the {10-Spades}, and both players checked.

Marshall said that he got counterfeited as he tabled the {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}. Yilmaz showed the {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}, which did in fact counterfeit Marshall and win the pot.

Dinner Break: McLaughlin Leads, Mortensen Still In

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Marc McLaughlin
Marc McLaughlin

Three levels of play are complete on Day 5 of the Main Event, and the players are now on a 90-minute dinner break. The chip lead changed several times over the past two hours, but at the end of the level, it was Marc McLaughlin at the top of leaderboard. He jumped into the lead when his aces held up against Patrick Renkers's Queens. Jonathan Jaffe and Sami Rustom also pushed toward the top during the past level.

Carlos Mortensen, the only remaining Main Event champion in the field, also had a good level. After being outdrawn to become short-stacked, Mortensen doubled up twice, and finished the level with about 1.5 million in chips.

There were several notable eliminations during the last level. Max Steinberg, who was at or near the top of the chip counts throughout most of Day 4, had a tough time gaining traction today and busted early in Level 23. Ashton Griffin got the last of his chips in the middle with {a-Spades}{10-Hearts} and lost Sergio Castelluccio’s {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Ronnie Bardah was short-stacked most of the day, and he busted when his {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} lost to Jorn Walthaus’s {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. This is Bardah’s fourth consecutive year cashing in the Main Event, which ties the record held by Chris Bjorin and Christian Harder. Other eliminations this level include Anthony Forsyth-Forrest, Nikolai Sears, and Yi Fang.

There were only 27 eliminations during the last level, a sharp drop in the pace from earlier in the day. There are now 109 players remaining with two more levels scheduled to play tonight.

We’ll be back soon with updated chip counts from the field, and with live updates when play resumes after the dinner break.

Tran Takes First Pot Post-Dinner

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante

Oliver Price raised to 60,000 from under the gun, and JC Tran was the lone caller from the big blind. Both players checked the flop of {q-Clubs}{2-Spades}{k-Clubs}, and the turn brought the {j-Clubs}. Tran fired out 90,000, and Price tossed in the call. The river brought the {8-Clubs}, and Tran kept up the aggression with a bet of 245,000 on the four club board

Price kicked his hand in, and Tran took down the first pot after dinner to get back over 1.5 million.

Ortiz Doubles Through Farber

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante

The hand started with Jay Farber opening to 65,000 from the hijack, before Fabian Ortiz moved all in for 245,000.

“I made it to big, and now I can’t fold,” said Farber, after the action folded back to him. He made the call, and both players tabled their cards.

Ortiz: {j-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Farber: {4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

Farber took the lead when the flop came {10-Spades}{3-Hearts}{4-Spades}. Ortiz had stepped up from his chair, preparing to leave. The {j-Clubs} on the turn though, had him sitting straight back down. The {a-Spades} completed the board, and an excited Ortiz high fived his rail, as he doubled to stay alive.

Kings for Amyx

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante

Catching the action on the {5-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop, we found Darryl Ronconi betting out 150,000. Jack Amyx moved all in for 960,000 and Ronconi made the call.

Ronconi: {A-Spades}{6-Spades}
Amyx: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The turn and river landed safe for the at-risk Amyx as it fell the {2-Hearts} and {Q-Hearts} to see Amyx double through to roughly 2,000,000 as Ronconi slipped to 710,000 in chips.

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Marvin Rettenmaier
Marvin Rettenmaier

Maxx Coleman raised to 60,000, and Marvin Rettenmaier pushed all in for his last 395,000. Coleman thought for a minute before calling, and he turned over {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, and he was behind Rettenmaier's {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}. The board came {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}, missing both players, and Rettenmaier doubled up. "Mad Marvin" now has 880,000 in chips.
