Event #38: $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low Championship

Day 1 Completed

Danzer Runs Away With Day 1

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Chip Leader George Danzer
Chip Leader George Danzer

The $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low Championship drew 134 of the best poker players on the planet to the Rio by the time registration was through today.

That helped create a $1,259,600 prize pool with $352,696 and a coveted World Series of Poker bracelet awaiting the winner.

A total of 16 players will get paid, but that number will not include Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, Barry Greenstein, Tom Schneider, or Scott Seiver, who were among the bigger names that busted throughout the first five levels played Tuesday.

By the time they bagged and tagged, just 75 players remained in the hunt and they will all be looking up at WSOP Player of the Year leader George Danzer when play resumes at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Danzer continued his great run at the 2014 WSOP that already includes a win in the $10,000 Razz Championship, a final table appearance in the $10,000 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw and cashes in the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo/Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo and the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Six Max Championship by having an amazing day here.

It appeared the German Team PokerStars Pro scooped every hand he played on the way to building a huge 237,800-chip stack giving him a massive chip lead headed into Wednesday's Day 2.

However, there's still a long way to go, there are some rather big names that built competing stacks on the day and they will be looking to end Danzer's run-good as play continues.

This list includes no less than high-stakes online legend Brian Hastings, high-stakes gamblers Richard Sklar and Abe Mosseri, and 2014 WSOP bracelet winners Justin Bonomo and Calvin Anderson.

A host of other recognizable names also dot the chip counts list as well, including John Juanda, Dan Shak, Frank Kassela, Ted Forrest, Jeff Lisandro and more.

The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be back with extensive coverage from start to finish tomorrow as they look to play another five two-hour levels or down to a final table so tune in early and often as we get even closer to crowning a $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low Champion.

Danzer Busts Yu

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

Ben Yu: {x-}{x-} / {7-Clubs}{5-Spades}{k-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} / {x-}
George Danzer: {x-}{x-} / {q-Spades}{6-Hearts}{a-Spades}{8-Spades} / {x-}

"If he doesn't cash," Eric Wasserson just said, referring to Danzer, "he should never play stud eight-or-better ever again."

Danzer bet out on fifth street against Yu, Yu called, and the rest of the money went in on sixth.

Yu: {5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}
Danzer: {a-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Yu failed to improve to a full house on the river, getting dealt the {q-Clubs}, and Danzer could eliminate him if he filled up or hit a spade. His seventh card was indeed a spade - the {7-Spades} - and Yu was eliminated.

Ohel and Shak Chop Up Linde

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

Randy Ohel: {x-}{x-} / {4-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs} / {x-}
Dylan Linde: {x-}{x-} / {6-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} / {x-}
Dan Shak: {x-}{x-} / {5-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{9-Hearts} / {x-}

There were several bets on fifth street, and in the end Linde was all in for 7,000. Ohel check-called a bet on sixth, and then he too was all in on seventh. All three players then tabled their cards.

Ohel: {a-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Linde: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Shak: {k-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Ohel took the low, Shak the high, and Linde hit the road.

Juanda Fires Back

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Back from the dead.
Back from the dead.

Like a phoenix, John Juanda has risen from the ashes here, turning his once 5,500-chip short stack into almost 60,000.

Juanda: {x-}{x-} / {5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Phil Laak: {x-}{x-} / {k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Eric Rodawig: {x-}{x-} / {j-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Jesse Martin: {x-}{x-} / {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{x-}

It was a lesson in power poker from Juanda in this one as he brought in, but raised when Jesse Martin made a raise. Laak and Rodawig made the call, only to fold when Juanda and Martin got were willing to go three bets on fourth.

Fifth street saw Juanda take it down with a bet and add more chips to his ever-growing stack.

Kabbaj Bricks

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

John Bunch: {x-}{x-} / {7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{2-Clubs} / {x-}
John Kabbaj: {x-}{x-} / {5-Spades}{k-Spades}{3-Clubs}{a-Clubs} / {x-}

Kabbaj completed after George Danzer brought it in with a tre, Bunch made it two bets, and the action folded back to Kabbaj, who called. Kabbaj check-called another bet on fourth street, both players checked on fifth, and Kabbaj led out on sixth. Bunch called.

The duo both checked on seventh, and Bunch turned over {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for kings and sevens. Kabbaj flashed {q-Spades}{4-Spades} for a flush draw and a low draw, but then he revealed his seventh card, which was a big red brick; the {10-Hearts}.

Hastings Gets There

Level 5 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante

Brian Hastings: {x-}{x-} / {7-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{j-Hearts}{a-Spades} / {x-}
Daniel Negreanu: {x-}{x-} / {2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} / {x-}
Huck Seed: {x-}{x-} / {5-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{k-Spades} / {x-}

Mike Matusow raised a Huck Seed bet on fourth only to fold on fifth as Seed continued betting with Negreanu and Hastings calling him all the way down.

In the end, Seed had a low and Negreanu had the worst of it, mucking after Hastings earned half the pot with aces.

After being needled by the table most of the day, Allen Kessler shipped his short stack and said goodbye the very next hand.
