Shack-Harris Leads the Unofficial Final Table of the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship

Level 20
Brandon Shack-Harris leads the unofficial final table
Brandon Shack-Harris leads the unofficial final table

The penultimate day of the 2014 World Series of Poker $50,000 Poker Players' Championship is in the books, and leading the unofficial final table of eight is Brandon Shack-Harris. The Chicago native, 2014 WSOP bracelet winner, and Player of the Year contender bagged 4,101,000 chips, and was the only player to finish the day with more than 3.5 million.

Melissa Burr is not among the leaders at the unofficial final table, but she is the first woman to ever cash in this event. By simply reaching the final table Burr has already doubled her career lifetime tournament earnings, and she’ll be looking to climb the ladder tomorrow and possibly capture the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.

Joining Shack-Harris and Burr on Day 5 will be Frank Kassela, Abe Mosseri, Allen Kessler, Jesse Martin, Chun Lei "samrostan" Zhou, and John Hennigan. This is Hennigan’s third straight cash in the Poker Players’ Championship, and his second consecutive final table. The only other player at the final table with a previous cash in this event is Mosseri, who finished 11th in 2010 for $129,957.

Officially, Mosseri is only guaranteed $165,435 with seven players remaining, but it is rumored that he has already locked up $600,000 in side bets by reaching the final table. If he wins, he could earn an additional $300,000 on top of the $1,517,767 first-place prize.

Shack-Harris, who already has first, second, and third-place finishes at the 2014 WSOP, is nipping at George Danzer’s heels in the Player of the Year race, Martin is looked to capture his second gold bracelet in as many years, and Kessler and Zhou are both looking to win their first and only.

With his 36th WSOP cash, Kessler now has as many as the legendary Doyle Brunson.

Day 4 kicked off with 22 players – just eight shy of the money – and Vladimir Shchemelev’s early exit led to a three-table redraw. From there, Ola “Odd_Oddsen” Amundsgard, David Oppenheim, David Steicke, Gary Benson, and Jason Mercier all busted. Benson four-bet shoved with pocket nines and Burr, the three-bettor, tank-called with two kings. The cowboys held up, and the Australian hit the rail.

The bubble lasted nearly two hours before Elior Sion exited in a hand of stud hi against Shack-Harris. The Brit was check-raised by his opponent on fourth street, then check-called bets on all subsequent streets with a queen-high flush draw on board. Shack-Harris rolled over a full house after Sion called all-in on Seventh, and the Brit mucked.

Robert Mizrachi, Jonathan Duhamel, Matt Glantz, and Todd Brunson all busted shortly after the bubble burst. Duhamel and Glantz were both looking for return trips to the Poker Players’ Championship final table – for Glantz it would’ve been number three.

Australian James Obst was out-kicked with top pair in a hand of no-limit hold’em against Kessler, exiting in 10th place, and the unofficial final table was formed when Seiver dipped out in ninth.

Scott Seiver Eliminated in 9th Place ($115,447)

Razz

Scott Seiver: {x-}{x-} / {6-}{4-}{4-}{q-} / {x-}
Abe Mosseri: {x-}{x-} / {k-}{3-}{a-}{4-} / {x-}

After doubling up twice in Omaha eight-or-bettor, Seiver completed with a six in razz after Mosseri brought it in with a king. Mosseri called, then called a bet on fourth street.

Mosseri made a better board on fifth, Seiver paired, and the former tossed out a bet. Seiver called. Seiver was forced to fold on sixth when he was dealt a {q-}, however, leaving himself with around 90,000 chips.

Pot-Limit Omaha

The rest of Seiver's stack went in the middle against his good friend Brandon Shack-Harris in PLO, and the hands were opened:

Seiver: {q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Spades}
Shack-Harris: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

The 2014 WSOP bracelet winner and Player of the Year contender eliminated Seiver as the board came {3-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}, and we are now down to an unofficial final table of eight.

James Obst Eliminated in 10th Place ($115,447)

James Obst - 10th Place
James Obst - 10th Place

No-Limit Hold'em

James Obst opened for 50,000 and was met by a three-bet to 135,000 from Allen Kessler in the small blind. The big folded, Obst called, and it was heads-up action to the {k-Hearts}{j-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop. Kessler quickly continued for 175,000, and Obst paused for a few moments before making the call.

When the {2-Spades} appeared on the turn, Kessler announced that he was all in for 710,000. Obst, who only had 610,000 or so, hit the tank for a solid six minutes. He seem pained by the decision and his lips could be seen moving as if he were talking it over with himself. Eventually he whispered, "Call."

Kessler: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Obst: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Both players had flopped top pair, but of course Kessler's kicker had him out in front. Obst began to get out of his seat and watched helplessly as the useless {Q-Diamonds} blanked on the river. Obst will take home $115,447 for his tenth-place finish.

Todd Brunson Eliminated in 11th Place ($115,447)

Razz

Scott Seiver completed with a {3-} and then called when Todd Brunson raised with a {3-} of his own. Seiver proceeded to call bets from Brunson on every street until the later was all in for his last 50,000 on seventh street.

Seiver: {3-}{j-}{9-}{8-} / {4-}{5-}{6-}
Brunson: {3-}{7-}{j-}{a-} / {2-}{7-}{q-}

Brunson ended up with a J-7-3-2-A low, but it was no good as Seiver had made an 8-6-5-4-3 low. Brunson took home $115,447 for his 11th-place finish.

Matt Glantz Eliminated in 12th Place ($99,388)

Level 18
Matt Glantz - 12th Place
Matt Glantz - 12th Place

No-Limit Hold'em

Chun Lei "samrostan" Zhou opened for 35,000 under the gun and Matt Glantz three-bet all in for 100,000 or so from the small blind. The big folded and Zhou wasted little time in making the call.

Zhou: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Glantz: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Glantz was in trouble, and his best bet to survive was to catch an ace. That didn't happen on the {9-Spades}{6-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop, nor did it come on the {6-Diamonds} turn. An ace and an ace only would save Glantz on the river, but it was not meant to be as the {K-Clubs} blanked.

Glantz, who had made the final table of this event two times in the past, was denied his record third appearance and had to settle for 12th place and a $99,388 consolation prize.

Jonathan Duhamel Eliminated in 13th Place ($99,388)

Jonathan Duhamel - 13th Place

Stud 8

Jonathan Duhamel had the bring-in with the {5-Hearts} and Frank Kassela completed with the {A-Hearts}. The duo then engaged in a series of raises that resulted in Duhamel getting his entire stack in on third.

Duhamel: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} / {2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{j-Spades} / {5-Hearts}
Kassela: {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs} / {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} / {a-Hearts}

Duhamel failed to improve on his tens, while Kassela wound up with a full house. Duhamel, who finished eighth in this event last year, failed to improve upon it this year as he exited in 13th place for $99,388. Still, back-to-back cashes in this event is not to be overlooked.

John Hennigan raised to 35,000 on the button, Robert Mizrachi raised the pot out of the small blind, and Hennigan called. The dealer fanned {10-Clubs}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs}, Mizrachi moved all in, and Hennigan called.

Mizrachi: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Hennigan: {9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

Hennigan improved to a full house on the turn ({9-Diamonds}), and avoided an ace on the river ({7-Spades}) to eliminate Mizrachi.

Sion completed, Shack-Harris called, and Shack-Harris check-raised Sion on fourth street. The Brit called.

Shack-Harris led out on the next three streets, Sion called him down - including an all-in bet on seventh - and Shack-Harris announced he had a full house.

True enough, he showed {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts} for tens full, and Sion mucked.

The tournament is now on a 60-minute dinner break. We will provide you with full counts shortly.

Abe Mosseri Savors the Sweat on Poker Players' Championship Bubble

Level 17
Abe Mosseri
Abe Mosseri

During a recent break in the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship action, as the final 15 players anxiously wait for the money bubble to burst, Abe Mosseri found himself thinking about far more than a min-cash.

Mosseri is well-known among the high-stakes community as a man willing to make a wager when he feels he has found an edge, and after ponying up $50,000 to play a poker tournament, the avid bettor decided to sweeten the pot.

A series of prop bets made with his fellow pros and longtime friends — including Matt Glantz, Doyle and Todd Brunson, and a few others who shall remain nameless — has provided Mosseri with added incentive to run deep against one of the toughest fields in tournament poker.

"I have a bunch of pending bets with a lot of other poker players," Mosseri explained to PokerNews during his break. "Matt Glantz, Todd... I didn't bet with Todd, but I bet with Doyle and he picked Todd. A lot of my bets I do with certain people, and they pick a bunch of guys against me. Basically the way it works is I bet against them making the money, and they're betting against me making the money. Also making the final table, and winning the tournament. Three separate bets, three separate thresholds."

With a first-prize payout of $1,517,767 awaiting the eventual winner, each of the 15 players left in contention is eyeing a massive score, but Mosseri has a little extra on the line. As it currently stands, Mosseri is one elimination away from reaching the first of three milestones that, if the rumored stakes are anywhere near accurate, could be worth nearly a million dollars in supplementary income.

"That's probably true," said the chip-leading Mosseri about the reported $900,000 he stands to earn with a win. "I'm on the first sweat now, and it seems like I'm pretty good to make it."

Asked about the impetus behind such sky-high side action, Mosseri was not shy about revealing his reasons.

"Motivation to play better," he said. "And, you know, you play for higher. Usually, you can win a lot, or lose small. I'm feeling really good, I'm going for the final table. Hopefully it goes fast!"
