Wright's Tournament is Over

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante

By the time the action was picked up, Larry Wright had been all in against Ajay Chabra and both players were drawing one card.

Wright: {9-}{8-}{3-}{2-}
Chabra: {8-}{7-}{6-}{2-}

Chabra opened a {10-} and Wright still had a chance to double but he turned up a {q-} and that was the last card he would peel in the tournament.

Li Four-Bet Rips

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante

Frederick Li made it 2,500 under the gun and Larry Wright to his left called before Aaron Mermelstein squeezed to 9,500 from the small blind. Li didn't spend much time before announcing he was all in for about 50,000. Both of his opponents quickly released their hands and Li scooped the pot before the draw.

Friedlander Busts to Iwata

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante

Steven Friedlander has been eliminated by Yosuke Iwata in what has already been an eventful first level of Day 2. Friedlander in the cutoff had his full 40,800 stack out in front of him, and Iwata in the blinds, with 11,000 invested in the pot (a three-bet), was pondering his decision. After a minute, Iwata called (pat), tabling {10-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}.

"I'm drawing dead," said Friedlander, as he threw his hand up, a jack among his cards.

Buchanan Busts to Chait as He Banters with Kassela

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante

Shawn Buchanan, having returned with just six big blinds, was eliminated by Craig Chait whose nine low sent him packing.

"You're a wrecking ball today," said tablemate (and prior WSOP champion in this event) Frank Kassela. "It's easy when they hand you a nine set!"

"I don't have to think like you," replied Chait.

"It just goes to show you any monkey can win this game."

"I love playing with you."

Schmitz Takes Early Trip to the Rail

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante

Michael Schmitz, returning with just 7,800 in chips, made his move right off the bat, moving all-in in early position. Jameson Painter threw in the call, taking one, as did Schmitz.

Painter immediately showed {8-}{10-}{5-}{2-}{9-}, and Schmitz {3-}{5-}{7-}{9-}. His drawn card? The {k-Hearts}.

"That's how you win this game," came a tablemate's comment.

Harman Peels Nut Eight to Double Through Hall

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 1,500 ante

Jen Harman raised to 3,500 in the small blind and Galen Hall countered with what looked like a 15,000-raise from the big blind. Harman moved all in for 41,800 and Hall called right away. Harman needed one and Hall immediately tabled {j-}{9-}{8-}{6-}{2-}.

"I had the exact same hand," Daniel Negreanu told Hall while Harman rolled over {8-}{5-}{3-}{2-}. She peeled {4-} to finish with nut eight, earning a double to 85,100.

Tabb Leads Stacked Field into Day 2

Steven Tabb
Steven Tabb

Only 63 players made it through the first ten levels of Event #13: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw, and the remaining field returns on Wednesday, June 5, at 2 p.m. local time to continue their quest for a WSOP bracelet. The record-breaking 296-strong tournament drew many famous players and some of them bagged up big stacks last night.

Nobody has locked up anything yet, though, with the $399,600 prize pool divided between the top 45 positions. Minimum cash is worth $2,242 and the eventual bracelet winner will pocket $96,278.

So far, Steven Tabb holds the pole position, thanks to his strong finish in the final level of Day 1. Tabb has accumulated 185,400 chips and he built a decent bridge between his top stack and the rest of the field.

However, the names that follow on the leaderboard guarantee that Tabb won't take anything for granted in the next phase of the tournament. Second in chips is none other than former champion Frank Kassela who conquered the $1,500 NL 2-7 Lowball Draw two years ago.

With Michael Gathy, Jon Turner, and Shaun Deeb also in the top five, the tournament promises some fine battles on Day 2. Another player who showed his prowess yesterday was defending champ Daniel Ospina who sits in 15th place. Ospina presented himself with an aggressive style and he'll surely try to capitalize on his experience from the 2018 title-winning campaign.

The are tons of other experienced players in the remaining field, including a select few who have their posters hanging on the walls around the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. That should be a strong incentive to follow the live PokerNews updates from the tournament as the NL 2-7 Lowball Draw is down to the last nine tables. Come back at 2 p.m. to find out which players will be on their way to the final table.
