Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Leon Tsoukernik
Leon Tsoukernik

Day 1 of Event #70: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed has come to an end after ten levels of poker with 212 players progressing. Barry Hutter bagged a massive 400,000 chips, with Alexandros Theologis (227,300), Michael Soyza (209,400) and Leon Tsoukernik (203,200) also running up their initial 30,000 starting stacks.

A total of 750 entrants took their seats in the Amazon Room of the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, which marked a extensive increase from the 621 received in this event 12 months ago. Furthermore, with late registration open until the start of play on Day 2, the number of entrants is likely to rise even more.

Mustapha Kanit joined the action in level 8 and, just two hours later, he was sat with a stack worth 185,000. Pierre Calamusa (194,000), Saya Ono (186,600), David Yan (156,200), Marc MacDonnell (131,900), Roberto Romanello (127,000), Faraz Jaka (124,300), and Anatoly Filatov (112,000) are also among those who will return with high hopes of a very deep run.

WSOP bracelet winners Ryan Laplante (102,000), Dietrich Fast (97,000), Niall Farrell (92,000), Ankush Mandavia (90,600), and Ben Heath (59,400) also remain in contention. Six-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu joined in on the action half-way through the day in a bid to secure his 13th cash of the 2019 series. Despite the Canadian being able to triple his starting stack at one point, his run came to an end during the final level of the day.

Fellow WSOP bracelet winners Michael Gathy, Liv Boeree, Martin Jacobson, Preston Lee, Jason Mercier, Sam Soverel, and Paul Volpe also hit the rail alongside the likes of Tony Miles, Cary Katz, Ali Imsirovic, Patrick Leonard, Patrick Serda, Benjamin Rolle, and Talal Shakerchi.

The blinds in level 11 will begin at 1,000-2,000-2,000 big blind ante when the action resumes at 2 PM on Tuesday, July 2, with another ten 60-minute levels scheduled to be played.

Hunichen Eliminates Soverel

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Chris Hunichen in a previous event
Chris Hunichen in a previous event

Chris Hunichen raised from the under-the-gun position to 2,600 and it folded all the way around to big blind Sam Soverel. He decided to put all of his chips in the middle and Hunichen wanted a count. The bet was 42,000 and Hunichen thought about it for a minute before calling.

Sam Soverel: {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Chris Hunichen: {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{2-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Spades} and Hunichen took it all down while Soverel was sent to the rail.

Nasty River for Negreanu

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Daniel Negreanu in a previous event
Daniel Negreanu in a previous event

Ryan Jones opened the action under the gun with a raise to 1,500 and Daniel Negreanu called from the hijack. Craig McCorkell called as well but from the cutoff and the players on the button and in the blinds got out of the way.

The flop fell {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and it checked to Negreanu. He took over the betting initiative with a bet of 2,000 and he was called by both opponents. The turn was {9-Diamonds} and it checked to Negreanu again.

This time he bet 7,200 but he couldn't get rid of either opponent as both called. The {q-Clubs} completed the board and all players checked. Jones showed {k-Spades}{q-Spades} for a rivered full house and Negreanu was friendly enough to show {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a flopped Broadway straight.

Nemeth Eliminated by Sheils

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Andras Nemeth
Andras Nemeth

Andras Nemeth moved all in from under the gun and saw Richard Sheils call from the cutoff.

Nemeth: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}
Sheils: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Board: {q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

Nemeth was in a flip for his tournament life but took the lead on the flop after pairing his queen. The turn card was safe for Nemeth, but Sheils saw his much-needed jack appear on the river to steal the pot from the Hungarian.

Nemeth said his goodbyes to his tablemates and Sheils moved up to 105,000.

Elias Scores a Knockout

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Darren Elias
Darren Elias

The flop was down {a-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, and Darren Elias bet 6,000 from the small blind before he saw his opponent move all in for close to 20,000 from the button.

Elias snap-called and turned over {a-Spades}{k-Spades} for top pair, which was ahead of his opponent's {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}.

The turn {k-Diamonds} improved Elias' holding to two pair and the {k-Clubs} on the river gave him a full house for good measure.

Alexandre Reard
Alexandre Reard

The board was down {5-Spades}{6-Spades}{7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, and Alexandre Reard saw his opponent check from the big blind.

Reard then bet 2,000 into the 2,500 pot and his opponent called after 30 seconds of thought.

The river card fell the {q-Spades} and Reard overbet the pot for 7,700 after the action had checked to him. The Frenchman sat patiently awaiting his opponent's decision and after close to 90 seconds passed he got his answer when the cards went into the muck.

Reard took in the pot and moved up to 67,000 as the end of level 2 approached.

Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

The board was down {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{a-Hearts} and the player in the big blind bet 1,200. Stephen Chidwick called from the cutoff before the player on the button folded, and the river card fell the {8-Spades}.

Both players checked to a showdown, and Chidwick took the pot holding {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for two pair after his opponent had shown the lower two pair with {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

Event #45 winner Chidwick is now playing a 21,000 stack, from his initial 30,000, after an active first level for the Brit.

Jean-Robert Bellande
Jean-Robert Bellande

Event #70: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed is upon us and cards will be in the air at 3 p.m. local time. It's the 70th event of the 2019 World Series of Poker held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The event is planned to play down to a winner over the next four days and today will be the first step in the process of crowning a new champion.

Last year, the tournament was won by no other than Jean-Robert Bellande. He beat a field of 621 players last year to win his first WSOP gold bracelet and the first-place prize of $616,302. The tournament is expected to have some big numbers again when registration ends at the start of Day 2. New entries would enter the tournament with a fresh stack of 30,000 and blinds at 1,000/2,000 with a 2,000 big blind ante.

The tournament will feature one-hour levels and they'll play ten of them on the first day. Another ten levels will be played on Day 2 of the tournament and they'll play down to the final six players on Day 3. A winner will be crowned on Day 4 of the tournament. Players will have a 15-minute break after every two levels. They will all start with 30,000 in chips and blind levels that will start at 100/100 with a big blind ante of 100.

Make sure to stay tuned to PokerNews to follow the process of finding Bellande's successor.
