Laszlo Bujtas Leads After Day 1 of Event #84: $50,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller; Arieh, Hellmuth Battle for POY

Level 15 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante

With just four events remaining on the World Series of Poker schedule, the race for Player of the Year might just be decided tomorrow on Day 2 of Event #84: $50,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller.

Josh Arieh completed a miraculous comeback, falling down to 14,000 chips at one point on Day 1 before finishing the night with 1,355,000. Arieh, already with two bracelets in the 2021 WSOP, leads the POY race by nearly 600 points.

The man who’s his closest chaser, though, also bagged chips on Day 1. Phil Hellmuth was, as usual, a late entrant into the field and finished the day near the bottom of the chip counts with 365,000. A win in this event will not only earn the champion $1,188,918 and the WSOP bracelet, but it will also be worth more than 1,000 POY points, more than enough for Arieh either to clinch the title or Hellmuth to close the gap.

At the end of 15 levels, just 33 players out of a starting field of 85 survived to play Day 2 tomorrow at 2 p.m. PST. Play was supposed to last through Level 17, but the decision was made to shorten the day by two levels, one that didn’t sit well with some of the players.

Laszlo Bujtas of Hungary finished Day 1 as the chip leader, bagging 1,980,000. Bujtas has nine career WSOP cashes and two final tables. His largest cash was a big one; Bujtas finished runner-up in the 2018 WSOP Europe Main Event for $789,227.

Right behind Bujtas is Ben Lamb, who busted a player near the end of the night to finish with 1,750,000. Arieh, Jared Bleznick (1,270,000), and Daniel Negreanu round out the unofficial top-five. Negreanu's first entry into this tournament lasted him less than a level, but his second bullet went much better as he finished with 1,250,000. Scott Seiver (1,070,000) and Dan Cates (1,045,000) also bagged more than one million chips.

Further down the leaderboard, Chance Kornuth (625,000), Shaun Deeb (520,000), Dan Smith (505,000), and Anthony Zinno (420,000) will have some catching up to do on Day 2 if they want to contend for the bracelet.

Lau Wins Some Back as Arieh Burns Through Time Extensions

Level 13 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Ka Kwan Lau
Ka Kwan Lau

Josh Arieh was in a heads-up pot against Ka Kwan Lau on a board of {9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts} with around 500,000 in the middle.

Lau moved all-in on the river for approximately 220,000 and Arieh began a three-minute tank that robbed him of his five time extensions.

Arieh was on his final time extension when the dealer counted down from five before his hand would be dead. Arieh did not act and he mucked his hand after letting his final extension expire.

"I can't believe I used all my tokens," Arieh said after surrendering the pot. "I would have bet anything that I wouldn't have used all my tokens."

Shak Stacked After Aces Cracked

Level 12 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

Jonas Kronwitter opened to 15,000 in late position and Dan Shak flat-called on the button. Adam Hendrix in the big blind then three-bet to 65,000 and only Shak called, with about 65,000 behind.

The flop came {a-Spades}{2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and Shak checked out of turn.

"It's on me," Hendrix said before making a decision.

Hendrix bet to put his opponent all-in and Shak folded, leaving himself short.

The very next hand, Shak got his stack in preflop against Kronwitter.

Dan Shak: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Jonas Kronwitter: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}

The flop of {k-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs} brought the only king left in the deck to give Kronwitter the lead with a set, and Shak hit the rail when he did not improve on the {5-Spades}{q-Diamonds} runout.

Karakitukov Misses Royal Flush, Still Busts Jouhkimainen

Level 12 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Veselin Karakitukov
Veselin Karakitukov

Joni Jouhkimainen bet 100,000 on a flop of {q-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and called off his remaining 105,000 when Veselin Karakitukov put him all in.

Joni Jouhkimainen: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{5-Spades}
Veselin Karakitukov: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

Jouhkimainen had flopped top set, while Karakitukov was on a royal flush draw. Karakitukov didn't hit it on the turn, but he did get the {10-Spades} to complete a straight. The river came the {7-Clubs} and the Finnish pro took his lucky golf ball and left the table.

Arieh Doubles Again Through Lau, Tops One Million

Level 11 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Josh Arieh
Josh Arieh

Shortly after Josh Arieh doubled up against Ka Kwan Lau, the two tangled in another massive pot that left Arieh the tournament chip leader.

Arieh got his last 515,000 in the middle on a flop of {9-Hearts}{3-Spades}{k-Spades} and flopped top set with {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}. Lau was drawing to a flush with {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{2-Spades}.

Lau completed the flush on the {7-Spades} turn and left Arieh needing the board to pair to stay alive in the tournament. He got that wish when the {7-Clubs} fell on the river.

"Did Josh get lucky again," Daniel Negreanu asked from another table.

"He had 14,000. Now he's chip leader," tablemate Robert Mizrachi replied.

Arieh On a Heater, Doubles Through Lau

Level 11 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Josh Arieh
Josh Arieh

Josh Arieh got his last 202,000 chips in against Ka Kwan Lau on a flop of {5-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}.

Josh Arieh: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}
Ka Kwan Lau: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Arieh had flush and straight draws against the pocket aces of Lau and hit the straight when the turn came {6-Spades}. The {k-Diamonds} river completed the board and Arieh doubled up.

"Oh baby! Daddy's back," Arieh said as he dragged in the pot.

"What a heater. I had 14,000."

Lau Cracks Aces With Aces

Level 11 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Ka Kwan Lau
Ka Kwan Lau

Ka Kwan Lau nearly doubled up in a massive pot where he was all-in preflop for over 550,000 against an opponent who he had covered.

Opponent: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Ka Kwan Lau: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades}

Both players had aces heading to the flop of {j-Spades}{4-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, which didn't put either player in the lead. The {6-Spades} on the turn gave Lau a flush draw and the {9-Spades} on the river gave him the best hand to eliminate his opponent in one of the biggest pots of the day.

Bujtas and Schwartz Chop Up a Family Pot

Level 10 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Noah Schwartz
Noah Schwartz

Six players limped into the pot and AP Garza jokingly juked a raise before checking his option in the big blind.

Noah Schwartz in the small blind led out into his six opponents with a bet of 13,000 on the flop of {5-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Garza called. The action folded around to Laszlo Bujtas on the button, who raised to 50,000.

Schwartz announced "pot" for a raise to 195,000 and only Bujtas called. The turn brought the {3-Diamonds} and Schwartz bet the pot again to put himself all-in. Bujtas quickly called.

Noah Schwartz: {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Laszlo Bujtas: {8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Both players had flopped wrap draws and turned the same straight. They chopped up what began as a family pot when the {3-Hearts} peeled off on the river.

"That was a big hand," Schwartz told his opponent. "Big hand."

Five players saw the flop on a board of {5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}. Eric Kurtzman in middle position bet 25,000 before Noah Schwartz in the hijack raised to 82,000.

Next to act, AP Garza announced pot to 310,000 and everyone else folded. With action back on Schwartz, he went into the tank for more than a minute, tossing two time banks into the middle.

He eventually folded, angrily throwing his cards back to the dealer as Garza raked in the pot.

Ian O'Hara was in a four-way pot on a board reading {5-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. O'Hara moved all-in for 73,000 and only AP Garza called.

Ian O'Hara: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
AP Garza: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

O'Hara had a set of queens while Garza had the nut flush draw. O'Hara didn't have to sweat it long as the turn brought the {5-Spades} to give him a full house.

The {2-Hearts} on the river gave Garza his flush, but it wasn't enough to win the pot.
